I bought a Turkish rug near there in the '80s - the merchant committed to send my chosen rug ($200USD) to Australia and was true to his word. The rug is still the pride of my family room, & lots of lovely memories of travelling in Turkey

From my armchair on the other side of the world I watch you in the cozy embrace of a secluded cove, your boat lazily bobs in the crystal-clear waters as you sip on a tantalizing cup of Turkish coffee and a view that could charm even Poseidon himself. Just a view that's so stunning, it's probably jealous of itself. The morning sun is doing its best impression of a Renaissance painting, you’re almost ready for a day of maritime musings. No rush, with each sip of coffee you navigate through options for the new Barefoot Dasher, the possibilities as boundless as the ocean itself. Ah, the joys of caffeine and contemplation-sailing dreams, stirred, not shaken. Ahh the envy 😘

Another lovely episode again this week Jon and Eli. I must say a couple of things. Eli, I like your hat this week, and you are looking stunning underneath it! You are both looking so happy this week. It's clear that you both like you small hamlets on the coastline of Turkey. They DO look very inviting! I think that must be one of the downsides of sailing the Med. - that you can't buy something from every place you pul into. Keeping boat weight down must be a real drag, as some of those wares look fabulous, especially those rugs! Thanks for all the clarification on the 52. Like you, I can not wait to see you both sailing the blue waters of the Med (or elsewhere). Bring it on. Fair 💨's and Following 🌊's.

Thanks again for another wonderful video guys. I didn't want to rain on your parade regarding aluminium boats but seeing you read other comments prompted me to say that my ally yacht was badly eaten away by hot boats and or the marina was hot. This will destroy your boat in 12 months. You have to test the water for electrical current when berthed
@gbsailing9436
@gbsailing9436 4 ай бұрын
I believe that they are having a 'meter' installed that identifies erroneous current no matter where you go.

Glad you enjoyed it, Ahmin and thanks for your very important point and Garth is onto it! As he says, Portofino boats will have a constant monitoring system with 6 points on the boats testing the electrical flow et up by the leading electrolysis company, Technoseal and if any current is measured at any time, an alarm will be triggered. So it is a continuous monitoring process with an alarm that rings if something is wrong...

@barefootdoctorssailing8567
@barefootdoctorssailing8567 4 ай бұрын
Yes Thomas, we were surprised with the polars too as they did seem dramatic and the proof will be found after the launch.... Apparently even for race boats, the polars are usually at least 10% over optimistic but as we have said to many others, we just want to sail at 12 -14 knots easily while having a coffee and not having to stress about having too much sail up (risk of capsizing...)

Welding the tanks strengthens and stiffens the boat and is the way to go. Epoxy coat the aluminium to stop the corrosion. Portofino know this well as you say so it’s the perfect solution. Can you tell us more about the key drives for now (and stern?) for docking. This is a really interesting approach.
@barefootdoctorssailing8567
@barefootdoctorssailing8567 4 ай бұрын
Hi LP, glad you understand the wvalue of the integral tanks to help stiffen the boat and have the tank function too, and the epoxy coat requirement... I am not sure what "key drives" you are talking about - we will have a folding prop in each hull on shaft drives and a bow thruster forward - is that what you are asking about?.
@39lp
@39lp 4 ай бұрын
@@barefootdoctorssailing8567 Sorry - jet drives! Autocorrect strikes again - or maybe fat fingers! You (or Portofino) mentioned that you will be using jet drives for manoeuvrability when docking. It sounds brilliant technically. But as it appears so good, why isn't this standard? Is it expensive? Or does it require a lot of maintenance? It's a really interesting choice if you go ahead with it.
@WillN2Go1
@WillN2Go1 4 ай бұрын
For your rudder skeg maybe a shallower angle. 45 degrees might be too steep. Something floating will first hit the bow, if it's pushed under, it won't take much force to push it down and go over it. The greatest risks are a grounding- that doesn't just push down, or a shipping container, which is so heavy it may as well be a rock. So whatever force hits that skeg, that skeg has to be strong enough to lift that hull of your boat to go over it. (I think by the cosign law a 45 d angle the 'lift' would be 0.707 of the weight to be lifted, 30 degrees is 0.500, 15 d is 0.26 On a calculator enter SIN(30) to get these numbers. ) The bioluminescence part of the video was terrific. When I saw Avatar I realized I'd been there. I'd just gotten back from China where I hiked all over Wuling Yuan Natural Scenic Area, Those are the tall tree covered pillar mountains - but they weren't flying. And for years in my sea kayak I'd go out paddling before dawn on moonless nights when the red tides flared up. With any disturbance, the Pacific Ocean glowed bioluminescent blue. Quorum Sensing. Mesmerizing. Dolphins and sea lions shooting through the water ten feet down would leave a beautiful trail. One of the key reasons why bulging above the waterline at the bow is so effective, and why there should be more of it, is of course water is 800x denser than air. (It's also why I've never 'feathered' a kayak paddle. And I've paddled into 20+knot winds.) A huge bubble at the bow of a boat above the waterline won't increase resistance. Having sailed 7500 nm across the Pacific in a Seawind 1640 42' cat, in all kinds of conditions, but skirting the storms, we got many waves right over the top of the saloon, but never buried the nose. (I think 'bury' means going into the water near the trough, not going through the upper part of waves.) We had several, feel it in your gut, tips to the sides.... but as anyone in a monohull getting knocked over a bit by a gust, a passenger completely new to sailing feels that in their gut. So no risk. And looking at drogues and how expensive they are, I have a 'someday experiment ' to see if a breeze block (cinder block in the US) will work as a drogue. For that experiment I'll try to steer with the concrete drogue. If it steers I think it will also protect against pitch poling. After all drogues are supposed to sink. There's a huge difference between $4000 and $4. (And of course Sailing Triteia on KZfaq, my friend James lost his rudder halfway to Hawaii and just happened to have picked up a drogue on a trash pile in the marina before he left. He's pretty sure he hit a red shipping container.) [Is it obvious that this was the morning I promised to do some house cleaning? ]

Thanks `Will for the detailed comment and your support on Patreon! Thanks for all your great info and we love bioluminescence as well so much - it is esp magical to see dolphin trails in bioluminescence! In regards to drogues, almost anything will work from ropes, to buckets to anchors and chains. however the concept that is needs to sink does not seem to be true (Cat Impi) as they use a fender tied out the stern, triangulated to both sterns, that floats while they are sailing slowly (when you don;t need the drag) and then sinks into the waves when you speed up . The adjust the triangulation to pull you one way or the other... And use a triangulated drug (of any kind)N to help steer when you lose your rudders.

Hi Camie, the tranverse berths do not encroach outside the hull as they are designed to use the space ABOVE the underwing only. That way we still have good underwing clearance (0.9m) and have that great space in the cabin. Where we lose the space is in the forward cockpit but if you see the photos of it, there is a subbed on that side to keep the full height of the underwing for the height in that berth. Great use of space...

@barefootdoctorssailing8567

Hi Geoffrey, every country has different requirements and your skippers licence for a big powerboat would be enough for a sailing boat. For example in Australia you can sail and yacht of 50 feet plus without a licence but you need a licence for the tender if your outboard is bigger than 6hp! So after sailing for 6 months around New Caledonia and Vanuatu without a licence, I had to get a licence when I changed from my 6hp to a 9.9hp!!!! Ridiculous. Any certificate of competence as a skipper is fine, I believe.... Most conoutries will accept an official looking document....
