You need to remember that this car originally was powered by a highly modified Predator 212 cc motor which drove the Honda transaxle using a Comet CVT. That was a lot slower than this and possibly the Cars and Cameras' King Midget. This version of the Insight might actually be useable as a daily driver or for road tripping, as long as you don't mind doing without creature comforts.

Keep in mind, a one pound improvement in boost to six pounds may not sound like much, but it is a 20% improvement over five pounds of boost. I think the take away for today is that your little Kubota diesel likes boost.
@leifhietala8074
@leifhietala8074 3 ай бұрын
I can't remember where I read it, but I remember reading that a diesel engine's performance improves with added boost right up to the point of condensing the intake air to a liquid, assuming the stresses don't blow the engine to pieces. I've never seen anyone test that however.

I know the intake hose that you are using is *Reinforced* and in theory should work fine, But id like to see how inefficient it is compared to rigid pipe. Of course, you would still use the reinforced flex tubing as couplings at the joints. But i image that the *entire run* of the pressure side being flex tubing is not helping. Its worth a try 😊😊
@panikrev175
@panikrev175 3 ай бұрын
At 6PSI it’s negligible,flexible charge pipes vs solid isn’t gonna make an appreciable difference in performance. Ideal material is solid aluminum charge pipes, but that’s a durability modification as opposed to performance. Those reinforced silicone flex tubes can handle 20-200psi…
@jttech44
@jttech44 3 ай бұрын
If the pipe doesn't burst or leak, it's not really inefficient, any dimensional change is just storing boost to use later, which is an idea that was used on some pretty cool experimental rally cars back in the day before the safety karens ruined racing.

Diesel tuning thoughts. 1. They like a lot of boost. To simplify things, think of it this way. ( this all happens because a diesel runs so far south of stoicometric afr) fuel makes the power. Boost is just to lower egt and smoke to acceptable limits. 18-20 psi is where O.E's start with diesels. Most O.E. stuff is around 30 psi, and the tuner boys get into the hundreds. 2. Your egt limits are low. You could safely use easily at least another 100 deg. C 3. You need to investigate ways of modifying the pump to provide a diffrent fuel curve. You already have more than enough fuel at low rpm, you now need to add fuel only at higher rpm. Currently, the way you increase fuel, increases fueling everywhere, leading to too much smoke and high egt before the engine is really into its stride. 4. This is probably the best thing on KZfaq ❤

making a pulley on camera for the first time: I follow a KZfaqr from the UK that moved an entire pipe organ into his workshop. he ditched all the primitive electronics and built his own controllers. The armchair warriors have been telling him "you don't know what you're doing" since day 1 yet he has a playing instrument that was not working when he bought it! And he wrote a song using the words "you don't know what you're doing" that he played on his organ. So, kudos to you for sharing your education and experimenting with us . obligatory "you're doing it wrong." 😊

Richard Holdener did a vid on the AMR500 and the most important take away was how incredibly kludged the intake/output manifolds were for it. You might want to look into some 3DP replacements that don't feed that small round hole into the large rectangular port & vice versa; when the supercharger can breathe better, you'll get more boost for the same amount of power taken off the crank...

Well sir I sure am sorry the blower pulley didn’t get you to 10-11psi. I commented on the episode back when you did the crank pulley and shared your loathing and would also have tried the blower pulley first but it was inevitable. Just wait though, 3rd time will be a charm……good luck and great project! But…… you’re going to need intercooling above 6-7psi. Prochargers are about 6-7psi boost blowers and come with an intercooling setup because of this. Your intake temp is climbing noticeably with that 1-1-1/2 psi increaseas you noted. Just remember Boyles law, as pres increases, so does temp.

I like how he's basically building a vehicle where he can pretty much say F-you to the automotive industry & their purposely overly complex expensive repair & maintenance costs & poor fuel economy. I'd like to build an aerodynamic velomobile type fully enclosed scooter vehicle using a 150-200cc scooter 🛵 engine & drivetrain. That has plenty of room for groceries, can cruise at 65-75mph on the hyw, with decent acceleration to keep up with traffic, gets 70+ mpgs. Make the seat so it can lay flat & convert into a climate controlled sleeping pod. Priced the same as a cheap motorcycle about $3,500 that could be drove year round like a car. That's also fun to drive, for extra storage, 3 removable aerodynamic locking storage cases could be attached to the sides & rear.

A bit of advice for sizing V-belt grooves. The top of the belt should be flush with, or slightly recessed from, the outer most surface of the pulley; but the bottom of the belt should never touch the bottom root of the pulley groove! The V-sides of the belt are what provide the friction and thus driving force for the belt. If the bottom of the belt contacts the root of the pulley it'll probably slip or ruin itself in short order.

Love this series. I always look forward to the next upload. I had a funny thought though. If you built a strong enough starter ring gear, could you hook up a motor to it and have a "boost" button that activates the motor and push the car up to speed from a dig and then disable it and let the diesel take over?

Really enjoying this saga of making high efficiency motors. It makes me want to try and build my own too.

Keep up the good work! I love the narration and the theme of the projects, the diesel insight is definitely my favorite project so far.

Drinking a peach flavored monster zero while driving my daughter to gymnastics as I play this video. Your videos are always the best part of my Sunday. I really need to get the upper control arm bushings replaced on my trooper. I'm really starting to feel the slop lol.

Love this series! I wonder how much heat the "charge air" is pulling from the engine? It would be interesting to see if insulation wrap would make any difference. It would probably be as negligible as the difference the intercooler would make, at these boost levels. Keep up the great content! You can really tell how much work you put into it!!

Great ep. Also been getting google telling me about your videos I've seen immediately in the past 18 months through a few different car websites. Can't wait for a turbo supercharged combination.

Love the videos...an easy way to lower air charge temps is the increase the diameter of your discharge tube. I went from a 3" tube to a 4 and change inch tube and my boost dropped from 13.5 lbs to 9.5 to 10 lbs and the decrease in velocity results in lower air temps. It's a cheater method that doesn't lose power as you are still moving the same volume of air. To help with things I had a wide mouth throttle body that decreases in size to gain the velocity back as it goes into the motor, but I'm sure a reducer coupler would have the same affect. Works great and have had the reliable setup for yrs.

That full throttle test was fun, that thing honestly sounds killer. Like a baby Cummins or old 2s Detroit.
