@@kylereese4822 That's just oxygen and hydrogen. If you're using the car's electricity to split the water to get the hydrogen and oxygen, you'll be wasting more energy than you can possibly get. If you're using mains electricity to electrolyze water at home and bottling the gasses, you might reduce the gasoline you're using but you'll be paying for electricity and the electrolysis equipment including consumables, plus dealing with pressurized hydrogen and oxygen. And either way you've got to deal with the potential problems hydrogen gas causes when it comes in contact with metal. Using "browns gas/hho" in a car is a wash, at best; fifteen years of talk and I've yet to see concrete benefits with proof of no long-term issue.

For comparison, I had a 1996 Geo Metro that was running on 2 cylinders thanks to a burned exhaust valve. In the 1/8th mile, it ran a best of 13.02 @ 60 mph. My boss owns an interesting old pickup. 1982 Datsun 720 and it's powered by an SD22 Naturally aspirated diesel. Makes 62hp. I went through the cooling system with OEM components a year or so ago. If it's under 50°F out, we have a piece of cardboard that lives in the toolbox for this purpose. Driving around town when it's 10 below out, you have to block the entire radiator or you wont have heat. 😂😂 And yes, when I said cooling system, it got a new OE temp thermostat (180°F opening temp if memory serves correctly) it just doesn't make ANY heat 😂
@nerd1000ify
@nerd1000ify 5 ай бұрын
Most thermostats have a deliberate leak built into them to ensure that some coolant flows past the wax capsule. In super cold weather that can be enough to stop the engine reaching temperature! Radiator shutters should also reduce drag a little.
@goosenotmaverick1156
@goosenotmaverick1156 5 ай бұрын
@@nerd1000ify its actually how cold the coolant in the radiator has gotten to before the thermostat opens to allow coolant flow. It's very little to do with that weep hole, that is mostly to allow consistent operation and air bubbles to go past easily. Blocking the airflow to the radiator limits how much the coolant can cool while in the radiator.

Interesting. Depending on which way you calculate (using time vs weight or mph and weight) the Kubota is making between 13.8 to 15hp, presumably at the wheel(s). MPG should only go up if you can run the engine warmer, but cresting 71mpg in winter is phenomenal! I'm very much looking towards the results with a moderate amount of boost. 👍

86 MPG is impressive. LOL, I'll bet your insight is also a lot faster. Its interesting how much can be achieved when changing driving styles. Last year when we hypermile the Saturn with this same diesel engine we got 80 MPG. I reckon in the lighter Honda we may be able to do a little bit better, however I don't believe the numbers will be realistic because in order for us to improve the fuel consumption we will have to drive in such a way that it will annoy other drivers, fortionatly we can do that on the back roads and only annoy the farmers.

In 2022 on my first trip to Alabama from Virginia in my 2000 Insight, I averaged 62.9 mpg over the 582 miles. GPS said that my moving average was 64 mph and my max speed was 84 mph. All that was with me and a bunch of luggage and "stuff" crammed-in the back. I found it to be no real trouble keeping-up with most of the Interstate traffic. I just stayed in the right lane and relaxed at about 65 - 70 mph.

I managed to squeeze 50.5 mpg out of my turbo 3 cyl '14 Fiesta hatch going from southwest PA to southeast Illinois last year. The wind was at my back so it was kinda cheating. 487 miles on 9.6 gallons of gas. On the return trip I averaged only 43 mpg as I was now driving into the wind. I also had an extra 200 pounds in the car for the return. Cruise set at 70-75 if the speed limit allowed it.

Heat the diesel up to get triple the energy out of it Jimbo (from lift pump to 3 or 4 laps of the exhaust or manifold with copper pipe then isulate it to the injector pump should do it). Or remove the valve overlap from the camshaft (decent machine shop or surface grinder) to save up to 70% of the mixture sodding off down the exhaust before it's had a chance to burn) 😎 P.s Turn the boost up!!

@BillyBob-uc9zp correct, efficiency and power do not always go hand in hand. As diesel fuel heats up, it becomes less dense, and therefore, you have less energy density injected. Most electronic diesel engines will perform volume compensation based on temperature...which is a great way to trick a CAT diesel into making more power by fooling it into thinking the fuel is very warm.

I read a research paper once that showed glass pack style resonators will actually increase the velocity of exhaust gases through a pipe by attenuating the exhaust pulses, which unless you have perfectly tuned headers and collectors, usually limit power a little bit by preventing the exhaust gases from cleanly exiting through the exhaust valve. You will definitely not notice a difference, but suffice it to say this will not in any way hurt performance. Any custom exhaust I build will have a resonator in it even if I'm using a regular muffler. If I can have the same or better performance while also being a bit quieter, I'm going to do it.

Pretty much all European Manufacturers started putting 1.3 or 1.4 N/A and Turbo-Diesels into their Sub-Compacts by the late 80s and early 90s. They all had about 45-50hp, 0-100kph in the 20s, Top Speed around 140-150 (90mph +/- 5) and rated Fuel Economy around 5-7l/100km (35-50mpg) however, in real life, people usually get no worse than 5l/100km and many get into the 3,xl/100km (mpg in the 60s). A mid 2000s-2010s Turbo-Diesel Compact or Sub-Compact gets 67-95hp, 0-100 in 11-15s, Top Speed 160+ (100+mph) and the same fuel economy.

This reminds me of my fantasy about building a fuel efficient reverse trike modeled after the "California Commuter" built by Doug Malewiki in 1982. It got 155 mpg with a 110cc Honda motor. Unfortunately I don't have the skills to try and build this and don't plan to pay someone to build it for me. Thanks for the video Jimbo.

Next time you gotta shape aluminum sheet metal. Make large marks with a sharpie and heat it with a torch until the sharpie marks go away. At that temp the aluminum is perfectly annealed and easier to shape. Keep up the great work love your channel.

1:15 Faster than walking, hahaha, that's a good sense of humor, this channels rocks in naration. Audi A2 and VW Lupo? designed to do 3.0 liter on 100km with a TDI engine. 1.2 litre three cylinder diesel engine with turbocharger and direct injection with a Porsche electronic Gearbox. They set the world record using the lupo at 2.36 L/100 km. Volkswagen's 1L Concept achieved 1.0 liter / 100km. But the materials used on these cars, like magnesium (for doors, hood, etc) and so make these car very expensive, that they don't sell.

The VWs and Porsche's of back in the day had pretty effective heat, without taking it away from the engine. They used the heat coming off the exhaust system to keep the windshield and passengers from freezing. Easy to plumb into existing duct work.

That car is so light. I built a 1974 Jeep CJ5 with a fiberglass body and a soft top. I weighed it on a truck scale and it's 3600 pounds. Yeah it's got a Cummins and yeah it's got a big winch bumper and winch. But man, that's still God awful heavy for a CJ5. Edit: 71 MPG is awesome! My Jeep gets a consistent 25 on 35" mud tires. I like it tho and it's one of my daily drivers. I can't go get fuel or grab a coffee without somebody coming over asking questions. Usually the first question is, "is that s diesel?" LOL. Someone's i say no, i never check my oil. 😂

For reference, in the same time frame the Insight was sold a popular European diesel econobox was the second generation FIAT Panda. The diesel version had a 1.3L common rail four cylinder with turbo and intercooler making 70hp, which could accelerate it from 0 to 100 km/h in 12.5s. Its mileage was good however not as extreme as the one of your car

I'm always happy to watch the new episodes. Fun fact: VW was selling a mini what was capable of achieving the 3 L/100 km fuel economy, the Lupo 3L (en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Volkswagen_Lupo). Not many of those were built and probably all ended up with collectors.
@schorso
@schorso 5 ай бұрын
I actually had one of those, it was a ... lets just say "strange" car. The 1l 3-cyl engine had a huge amount of torque, and although it needed rather about 4l/100km daily driving - you could easily lay a brick on the pedal, and this thing would pull though europe with 160 km/h and not exceeding 5l/100km. However, the thin tires made you slide around every corner, the sequential gearbox was awful, and even the VW workshop had no idea how to repair the car...
@szszg
@szszg 5 ай бұрын
@@schorso must have been an experience 🙂 I myself doesn't fancy diesels, but this level of fuel efficiency shows how lazy car manufacturers are (and how economy unaware people are). I'd find quite amazing if Jimbo made something much more fuel efficient than big manufacturers are capable of.

@@szszg this Lupo's version used aluminium or magnesium components to make it lightweight, there's a trade-off between cost and fuel economy. Kind of like the BMW i3, built from carbon, very lightweight, also very expensive, and a nightmare to fix if it's even slightly crashed. I'd like to see more efficient cars, but not sure I'm willing to swallow the front cost and end up with a car that might have to be scrapped if anything happens to it. We might do without self closing trunks/doors and others dispensable or pointless options though ... Modern cars don't have to be so heavy, nor so bulky,every model became bigger and bigger over the years. I read somewhere that the last Polo was bigger than the first Golf, so they had to create the Lupo because they didn't have any small car anymore.

I'm not sure if Kansas uses any salt on the roads, it seems like we mostly rely on sand. Cars don't really rust around here, when I originally moved here in 1989 I was shocked to see some folks using daily drivers from the 1960s. I also noticed that my 1990 Honda Civic didn't really show much rust when I replaced it in 2003, just a small bit on the front where it was hit by a rock chip. My sister's 1990 Corolla had rusted through in a lot of areas at the same time. Part of that is that we don't get nearly as much snowfall in Kansas as they do in Upstate NY or Michigan. I also suspect that the lack of salt on the road also helped.
@robotcantina8957

It appears that on the highway they do use some salt, at least in the Wichita area however on the back roads I don't think they even bother to plow. I'm always on the lookout for interesting older cars and I just don't see as many anymore. I cant imagine they rusted away, but for some reason in this area they are hard to find.

In another thing is I don't know why everybody's so focused on the horsepower of a diesel. It's not about the horsepower. It's about to torque. How much torque that motor's got to get that car up and moving with almost 70 miles to a gallon man. That car is perfect for a fuel economy. I don't think you squeeze anymore out of it. Even a Volkswagen can't hit 70 mi to a gallon

My last "small" diesel was a 1983 Mercedes 240d. I think it was rated for 71hp new out of the factory, but mine had done a few hundred thousand miles and probably wasn't making more than 50. It was also much heavier, so I had similar performance. It was a daily driver for me and I averaged ~25mpg. Loving this series and all the videos you put out!

Funny thing is on turbo diesels, as long as they don't lose to much compression, they gain horsepower. Its not uncommon for a caterpillar c15 to gain 100-200 hp after the injectors holes to open up from wear.

This set up you built here is pretty close to what we were pondering
