It has been almost 2 months since I bought this car, and I finally put together the first video. We love Volvo, and they love to take our money to keep alive. Oh, the price we pay for love.
In the lyrical words of the late Leland Palmer:
"Getting to know you/
Getting to know all about you/
Getting to like you /
Getting to hope you like me!"
Welcome to the small town of Volvo Lovers in the quaint Great Northern part of the southwest. Our coffee is black like the midnight sun, and our steaks so rare you could sell them to Tiffany's. Here we have reasons why this S60R this awesome, reasons why it's terrible, and the mystery of WHO KILLED All Wheel Drive? My guess is the Angle Gear collar sleeve. She wasn't even out of high school age...
Next time we will get into the brake replacement, tires, tune up and the drive from New Mexico to its new home back in California (plus more problems).

I love the same thing about my v70. I love how quiet and smooth they are at high speed. Was recently on a short road trip with my friend and I just brought it up to 105 and cruised for a bit and my friend didn't even realize at first because of how smooth it was. Truly the perfect road trip vehicle.

Yes I've been waiting for updates on the S60R! I'm honestly amazed with the condition of your car with the amount of mileage it has on it, I don't have any stitching issues in mine and the seats are in great condition for being 14 years old. Mine also has not had any electrical issues aside from the stereo knob being excessively bi-polar at times. It has 178k miles (granted 70% of that are highway miles going to and from work every day). So it really looks like the previous owner(s) either really beat that car up or unfortunately you just got a bad one of the bunch. Anyways I love that you are a part of the P2 R family now, and I'm looking forward to more videos on it!

thanks, Zander! It’s definitely going to require a lot of maintenance to catch up on the neglect. The first owner took good care of it for the first 100k miles or so, so thankfully and hopefully it’s not asking too much to make up for the latter 25k.

After watching those clowns on Shifting Lanes buy two R’s without learning a thing about them, I, so happy to see your restoration videos on this R. I’ve been lucky with my 2005 V70R, but it was lower mileage and I don’t drive it a ton. Only had normal maintenance items but I’m noticing an issue with it burning a little more oil than it did when I first picked it up 3 years ago. PCV passes glove test still, so I’m going to inspect the turbo.

Rediscover Film oh how funny I was just watching their video on that second one 😳🙄 my competition haha. Do you want to tell them about the “top mount” or should I? I would love a wagon but I do like the smaller cabin space for keeping the noise down. However they’re both pretty well insulated so I only have older Volvo wagons to compare to. And that BMW. Thanks for watching. I’ve got a lot of technical maintenance/resto info coming up and more adventuRes to share in the following vids.

The 4wd in the gravel with the front wheels spinning would possibly be the collar sleeve... the teeth on the 2003 and 2006 had some play in them. I replaced my collar sleeve with the 2007 version where the teeth were more precise. I am a little late to this video. But I miss my S60R dearly. Hope all your ladies are OK 👍

It’s great to see this project getting on its feet and a move on, I’m planning for something similar later this year or maybe next depending on how my S80 project does (I’m wanting to do a 2.4 manual s60, I want to work on NA before it’s complicated with turbos)
@DavidBello
@DavidBello 6 жыл бұрын
Rex Nihof it’s not too complicated with the way Volvo added heir turbo. And a lot more fit with it. You may learn a lot but might spend a lot too on NA and later a Turbo instead of starting with the turbo car. But the NA will be guaranteed to require less maintenance, even if only a little.
@rex_s80
@rex_s80 6 жыл бұрын
David Bello if I were to have a turbo. At I would buy a v70r that came with one because the compression ratios for the NA engines are very high so it would take a lot of work. I just wanted to ring out the engine a lot without having to worry about the turbo wearing and needing to be maintained since you never know if a turbo car is properly maintained where it isn’t gunked up and having a possibility of over heating or blowing something when running it hard.

Holy moly, that interior is quite rough, where did it spend its life, my S80 that is from 99 lived mostly in the Netherlands so definitely cooler climates and the stitching is fine for how old it is. How ever the suede inserts on the sports seats is super hard to find, do you know where to find replacement upholstery that is oem? I also have a working sunroof but there are plastic guides that are partially broken that lets it clunk about when you have it set to closed and is nerve racking when are on the freeway and hit a tiny bump and here it move about.

I'm surprised David that it appears that you have skipped a generation concerning your love of the marq. Could it be that there is some deep secret shrouding my beloved 850/V-70 series Volvos. The 850 was the car with which I was first introduced to the beauty of Volvo and all these many years later, is still my favorite. I'm a little older now than when I bought my first new Volvo and, unfortunately severally disable with various different ailiments to include Parkinson's. This does not allow me to work on my own vehicle although at one time, I was quite competent. There are a lot of positive things about living here in the North. Woods of New England but one of them is not what our extended winter weather and the assorted products the government uses on the roads do to automobiles. Tie that in with the fact that Volvo's do not have as of yet the following of say BMW or even Audi's up here, but rather one of utility such as say an old Ford P/U and the extremely high prices that mechanics charge for keeping what is essentially a 20 year old car with a foreign name attached to it and you can begin to scratch the surface of frustration on finding and or restoring one. However, I really enjoy both your and Roberts viedos and am positive that were I still able the videos would allow me to attack any problem that might arise. I would sure like to find one that someone such as you has put their loving hands on at a reasonable price. It would surly last me for the rest of my life. I found a '97 Volvo 850R in Chicago recently at an internet classic car sales location with what seemed to be a decent price but I could think of no one that having the proper knowledge of the subject such as you or Rob check it out so it soon found another home. Thanks again for helping me exercise my brain and whet my appitite with your videos. BTW, didn't you move to California or is it the other way around? May GOD Bless all of you out there.
@DavidBello
@DavidBello 6 жыл бұрын
Randy Purtteman hi Randy, thanks for your comment and for watching. I moved from NM to CA. Still traveling a lot back and forth to take care of business. I hope you find a good car soon. I liked my 99 V70 a lot and my moms 2002 S60 was just as easy to wrench on so this 04 is a welcome project. It’s definitely frustrating to find people who know these cars and more importantly have the dealer-only tools and computers to diagnose and help us DIYers.

You should have a detailer come out and detail the car man. All of the leather issues can be fixed by them with dye and other products. They will make it look like new and if there are any minor scratches on the paint they can polish them out and make it look brand new! probably run you 200-400$ its worth every penny!

For brake Rotors and pads I know a great brand for daily and spirited driving, I have powerstop ceramic pads and drilled/slotted rotors, man do they hook up and they are quiet while giving off virtually not brake dust. They are fantastic upgrade over regular pads and rotors. I’ve had them for 3 months and I finally have started to see some dust on the rotors and it’s barely anything and they brake hard, they stop my car so well I have to be careful that I don’t trigger the ABS.
@DavidBello
@DavidBello 6 жыл бұрын
That’s good to know. I had Powerstop on the BMW and they warped badly after getting got a few times. I used Pro Stop (equally generic sounding) with the Semi metallic pads (OE material) and they dust much and often.
@rex_s80
@rex_s80 6 жыл бұрын
David Bello with powerstop it’s very crucial that you break them in properly and they won’t warp, I accidentally sprayed water directly onto the front rotor after a hard drive because I wanted to wash the car and there is not brake noise or vibration, and the rotor was steaming after. I could have just been lucky.

Your rear speakers are probably working but they work differently in "Dolby Pro Logic" mode. This mode makes the rear speakers create echo or ambient sounds to enhance the music in the front (sorta like surround sound). So it will sound weird when this mode is on and you change the sound output to the rear speakers only. If you turn off "Dolby Pro Logic" by hitting "OFF" or "3-CH" on the head unit the rear speakers will just play the same sounds as the fronts.
@DavidBello

was going to comment this. The Dolby Pro logic doesn't provide good sound quality when sitting in the back either. It's designed with the driver in mind
@Peppermint1
@Peppermint1 6 жыл бұрын
If i'm not wrong, Dolby mode takes the power from the rear speakers (rear doors and deck) to create the surround with the front speakers (fr doors, tweeters and center speaker). So no sound in the rear of the car except for some lows that come out distorted.

@@DavidBello good to hear - the other thing that could happen is the amplifier getting corroded up. Volvo did a really dumb placement by putting it on the floor under the passenger front seat - and by on the floor I mean ON the floor - the lowest point in the whole interior - so it can get wet and it can gunk up from moisture... ask me how I know...

Subbed ! I'm thinking your spent a lot of time in the sun and dried out the leather. My 04 R has blue stitching on the instrument cluster hood, looks more of a cream colour stitching on yours, you could get it recovered in alcantra and get blue stitching along with the centre console lid. I noticed the paint has worn on the centre console, I bought a new one for mine and it wasn't too expensive :)

I will know more next month when I’m back to work on the car. Two videos from now. 2006 is a much preferred year so I believe you will have good luck with it. They all burn out the DEM on the transmission at some point so climate is important in affecting the life of these modules. The collared sleeve in the angle gear can go out too. And low oil can cause it to turn off the AWD too.

I'm up in NW Pennsylvania so the climate is extremely sporadic. He's asking $5500 for the car which from what I have seen is a fair price. I have always had a fascination with these cars for some odd reason. i've the same clunk noise in my volvo v50, been told steering racks aren't great in them

Alan Ring that’s right, Soren’s XC90 also has a really sloppy steering rack. Hopefully tie rod ends can tighten up that slip enough to keep it planted on the road better. Some of these CA overpass mergers can really make you white knuckle the wheel

David Bello you think it might work? I think ive a leak in mine cleaned it down a few months back same spot again destroyed in crap. I hope my creek or clung is just the bearing on the strut

I replaced the tie rods (inner and outer) on my fiance's S80 and the clunk is still there. The variable speed ones apparently 'all do that' at high mileage... :(
