The Belgians flooded part of their country in World War 1 to stop the German army from taking the rest. Even the King of the Belgians fought with his people to keep Belgium free.

During the beginning of World War 1 in 1914, the Belgians had to flood the river to stop the Germans from taking the entire country. The French and Germans were trying to outflank each other and they were both headed north to complete the maneuver, but the Belgians stopped them!

But the flood ended up in highly economic damage and hygenic damage. Many belgians died due to disseases after that. But it worked and so the belgians kept that little part of the country. And a fun fact is that king Albert was a great leader. He went into battle with his soldiers and he fighted next to them. Not far away, safely assured giving commands. And his wife helped nurses and was a nurse.

@@insertcoolnamehere6293 that little part of country stopped the germans in their tracks, and turned to war into the trench warfare standstill it turned into.

World war one is still remembered in Belgium, I am Belgium and we have a saying, "always someones father, always someones son" which is fitting since in ypres and near the user we flooded in ww1 still stand gigantic fields filled with white tomb stones, each one is a fallen soldier of us or one of the allies
