You need to check out their live-version with Radio Taparok. He did a cover of this in russian for youtube, they had him on their tour-leg in russia (for this song), and later he produced a song about the defense of moscow and let sabaton cover it in english. Also yes, they perform it live, usually with a very costumed band.

Hey, thanks for the great reaction video! And I can only agree with you: Sabaton is simply Sabaton - their music always works! Sabaton live is amazing every time. At my last concert on January 31, 2020 in the Frankfurter Festhalle (together with Apocalyptica) they played it, it was so impressive. The stage in bright green light, lots of fog and Joakim with a long coat, a "gas cannon" and a gas mask. You get goose bumps when you know the historical context. There is also a live video from London, filmed by Sabaton.

This one is the most emotional song of Sabaton imo. There is some unique emotion about men who consider themselves already dead deciding to charge and die once again. Usually we assume subconsciously that loyalty and dedication is a bravado we charade in order to convince ourselves to do something we have to. Self delusion if you will. Once death comes, none would care about what they told they would give their lives for. Not one single soldier dies smiling. those men, knowing they were posioned beyond medical care, having only few days left, considered themselves dead. The bravado is gone. The bitter reality came. Patriotism was nothing more than self conviction. And yet, instead of sitting and waiting for death to come, spending their last moments in peace, they once again decided to charge into fire for their fallen comrades and their nation. That is true loyalty. They gave everything they had, and thenthey gave even more. That brings tears to my eye. Actually being willing enough to sacrafice that much for something.. tragic. Yet so pure and beautiful

One of the most interesting things, that even Hitler never used chemical weapons during ww2. Of course it was used in concentration camps in controlled environment, but never on the battlefield. Most likely because Hitler himself was struck by a chemical weapons and he had a very long recovery.

They sang about many events of the Great Patriotic War: the Battle for Moscow, the Kursk Bulge.
