I really love this song, it hits hard and shows that chemical warfare is no joke. It also sound amazing. You got the story right, Germans gassed the fortress and when they came expecting no resistance at all, few russian defenders that survived launched counter attack, while literary coughing their lungs out (chlorine gas dissolves tissue). They managed to scare germans so they started to retreat while taking heavy casulties (many of them got killed in their own minefields, traps and barbed wire). Sorry for mistakes, english is not my first language and its 2 am while i am writing this. :D

@5:00 the gasmask you see is a German style mask, like others said they were fairly rare early on and still not completely standard at the end of the war. A unit charging in after gas was used on the enemy would likely be one of the few units universally equiped or near it with gas masks(depending on the gas and how long after they used the gas they attacked). The Russian gas masks had a more box style respirator filter hanging there instead of the small cylinder you see in the pic.

I told you this song.had a "groove"! Not just the music...the cadence of the lyrics is sooo good! Better video choice woulda been the original live video... only bc whomever typed the lyrics out messed up (it it made it hard for me to learn the lyrics) it should read 'Facing the *lead* once again"... The gas masks are just representative of the theme...the nen did rap themselves in rags...that plus flesh melting off from the gas...turned the Russians into "zombie"-looking beings, charging the Germans...which scared the crap outta them long enough (bc those who charged understood...they were already dead men) for the surviving Russians to sack their fort and retreat to fight another day.
