Historic fact: it was an habit to reward the pilots with a silver medal for each enemy killed. Manfred Von Richtofen took down 80 enemies but only received 60 medals because german silver supplies were declining and he wouldn't accept bronze medals.

Kinda funny that the Japanese never improved their technology through out the war. Before we launched the Pacific Campaign, the Germans already had jets and we had improved our aircraft to for surpass the Zeros that attacked Pearl Harbor, but the Japanese never changed... kinda says something about traditional Japanese culture, it’s very stagnated.

In the days of the Red Baron, a pilot's skill was measured in the number of enemy planes he could shoot down without taking any hits. Today, a pilot's skill is measured by how far they can push the limits of human flight without anyone getting hurt. Even so, when space travel becomes common and pilots take to new heights, I hope none of them forget the skills of the Red Baron and try to vie for the title of "Ace of Aces" among the stars.

@CipiRipi00 Chivalry was something you could afford back then because you could use superior skill, parry attacks or use armor and shield against slower and less penetrating incoming missile fire. Once you lose the ability to defend yourself this way, it’s just who strikes first that determines who wins in almost every instance. The foolishly brave become dead and the clever and practical people and tactics prevail.

The Germans actually did the same thing to Richthofen's English counterpart, Albert Ball. They had sent a letter to the Allies saying that Ball was dead and that they had properly given him a funeral complete with military honors. Perhaps this was just a gesture of giving back the good will they had received from their perceived enemies.

10/23/22 My son had recently gotten me into Sabaton and they were playing a show at The Fillmore, Minneapolis. We are buskers who play venues around here for a side hustle. The show had been over for a bit and the crowd was still milling about outside as we sing this. I saw some guys who had "dressed like Sabaton, like wow you guys really nailed it". We hadn't gotten to know the band very well yet. You did so well with dressing like Sabaton because you do it every day LOL Love you guys, it makes being a true fan even more special now. germany almost won the first world war but they'd made several critical errors in the early days of the first world war they had advanced faster than their supply lines could keep up and when the ammo the soldiers were carrying ran out they had to fall back giving up every mile they'd just taken, also didn't help that while germany was fighting england, france, russia, the us, and italy. their ally the Austrian-hungarian empire was focused on exterminating the Serbians and bosnians all because a handful of people pulled off the murder of their archduke. history now knows that picking bad allies, and making poor early choices in a war ultimately causes the group waging said war to lose.

@@JumalanMyrsky russia wasn't red before wwi. in fact they only became red because germany got a known communist who had been exiled from russia back into the country and provided him with funds to support a rebellion so that Russia would be taken out of the war, and that came back to bite them on the butt in wwii.

@@MarvinT0606 Richthofen absolutely despised people who didn't have an honor code. much like Franz Steiglers and his commander, if you shot an innocent person or a down pilot who had survived the crash he would harshly and angrily judge you as a coward. it was shown also in his movie when one his pilots did it he shook his head angrily at his co-pilot for doing it.

The red baron and all the fighter pilots felt the last bit of true freedom before it became regulated. They were truly able to push themselves and their planes to the highest heights possible. That level of freedom being able to sail the skies like that mustve been a feeling thats indescribable.

I found Sabaton by accident when my spotify playlist went to one of their songs with one of the sickest guitar openings I have heard and from there I have listened to pretty much all of their songs on repeat and this one has got to be my favorite, I love how this band combines history with metal which, not only makes their songs more interesting, but it is also something I can look up to see what the song talked about, such as Francis Pegahmagabow, who has a very interesting story that is told by Ghost in the Trenches and I would not have learned about him without this band. Anyway, thank you for listening to my Ted Talk and I cannot wait to see what other songs this band comes up with in the future!

Fun Fact... due to having 3 wings, the red baron was actually slower than other aircrafts.. the 3 wings generated more lift at slower speeds than simply 1 or 2 wings and was more maneuverable thus making him able to kill all hiss opponents by just making moves they were too fast to do

in the case of the DR.1 3 wings give more lift than 2 at same wingspan meaning they could shorten the wingspan and still have more lift. and the wingspan was one of the biggest brakes on rotating the aircraft and with that maneuverability back then. combine this with that British aircrafts like the Sopwith Camel had an radial rotary engine that while made more power making em bit faster but they had enormous rotational inertia because the whole block of the engine was rotating making em very tricky to fly and they really liked to only turn to right and downwards... an effect Manfred was more than happy to exploit.

Triplanes were indeed more maneuverable, but it's important to note that Richthofen actually flew the Dr1 for a very short time. It's famous just because it was the plane he was killed in. Most of his aerial victories were in the Albatross biplane.

They seem to tell the stories of the "little guys": the soldiers, not the nations they served. Like this song: it's not really about the war, or the nations in said war, it's about a legendary fighter pilot who was in said war. As a side note: Sabaton is the best history teacher I've ever had.
