Gotta say, I'm highly disappointed in the history section if this video. Some glaring inaccuracies. The UN did not have a dedicated peacekeeping force until 1956, when they formed the UNEF (Emergency Force) during/shortly after the Suez crisis. Every mission b4 that was just a hodgepodge collection of guys from different countries sent out to observe and broker peace deals that never worked. Also very disappointed that you did not once mention Canada in a tale about UN Peacekeepers. The entire idea was put b4 the general assembly by Canada's Secretary of state for external affairs at the time (Lester B Pearson, who would later go on to become Canada's Prime Minister), and Canadians have made up a significant portion of every mission to date, (usually around 10% of the forces on any given mission, despite our smaller population and minuscule standing army). It is also quite common for Canadian Generals to be put in command of peacekeeping missions, despite other countries contributing more men and material due to their larger resources. Overall, I'm not convinced you did a thorough enough job researching this topic b4 making the video, and I sincerely hope you will learn from this in future, and use those lessons to help improve the quality of videos going forward. That being said, I do love the work you've done, and absolutely love Sabaton's music. Keep it up. PS. So if all of those time travelers where to go back and kill hitler as a baby one of the domino affects would be that the UN is never formed. That would mean without intervention; one of the larger conflicts the UN would have brokered peace for (or prevented all together). May have spiralled out of control. Ultimately resulting in a different War to End All Wars, Germany creating atomic bombs, and a United Nations anyway.

the UN was clearly set up to fail. the absurd rules governing them give so little leeway that they are unable to do anything useful. it must then be pure coincidence that UN Peacekeeping got hijacked by Imperialist forces almost from the start.

Post War occupations of the Baltic States USSR deported hundreds of thousands to slave labor camps which didn'tend until Stalin's death. Post War occupation of Poland was so bad in the early years some claimed it was even worse than the German one which itself was already one of the most brutal occupation in modern history. The massive ethnic cleansing of Eastern Europe which between 8 to 14 million ethnic Germans were deported to East Germany, labor camps or flat out murdered lasted until the 50s as well. If you include stuff outside of Europe it gets considerably worse as well. But you can argue most of these are remaining ripples from WWII but honestly an eye for an eye argument never holds water.

He had someone inside of the government of Habyarimana feeding him more and more damning information. About the plans of ethnic cleansing, about the Interahamwe training to kill civilians, about the order of several million machetes from China, about Hate Radio. And he sent it all to the UN...and they did nothing. If you come to Kigali today, be sure to visit the Kigali Genocide Memorial. You will find the whole story, the original cables he sent. And what happend after he was ordered to leave. About 1mio people died in 100 days of murder. Sabaton should write a song about that conflict. About the 50000 people lured to Murambi and killed within 3 days. About the 250000 that died in and around Kigali and are now buried beneath the memorial. Even when the RFP took back the country bit by bit and drove the genocidaires to the west, while the French pressed in from that side. But then they opened a corridor and let the murderer flee to the DRC. They said, it was for the refugees. Who knows. But France to this day does not extradite known genocidaires to Rwanda. Think about that what you like. The most impressive part of the story is how Rwanda came back from that. There was a country torn, destroyed, all trust was gone, the population reduced and scattered, the dead, the victims or rape and violence, the murderer in custody, all levels of administration gone, no judges, no doctors, no teachers.....but just 25 years later Rwanda is a positive country, with a growing economy that conquered the hate and the suffering and is ranked as one of the top 5 developed countries in Africa. You could not have predicted this in 1994. I'm not from Rwanda, but have been there quite often and worked with the CNLG to keep the memory alive. Every annual commemoration (Kwibuka) has the motto: Remember. Unite. Renew. And that is what happend and keeps happening. I am astonished every time I visit, how the country has changed for the better. If you have the chance, visit Rwanda. You will not be disappointed. And Sabaton: Write a song about that conflict (which has been brewing for decades and was, of course, started by European colonialism).

I appreciate the sentiment but your thesis rests on a false presumption. Military partnerships like that are almost always the product of local security agreements, not the UN. We train with european soldiers bc of NATO, for example. We train with Nigerians, Saudis, Colombians, etc because we have mutual strategic interests in their regions and those nations ASK us to help. The UN actually has literally no say on military cooperations between individual nations. The UN doesnt have a military, there are no "UN training missions," something happens, the UN asks nations for troops, nations choose to participate and if they do, great, if not, no repercussion. Then when the UN goes in there and supposedly "stops the fighting," all they really do is push the fighting elsewhere - they dont STOP the fighting. They stand on street A, and all the militias just moved their fight to street B and the UN watches and says "not our jurisdiction, we cant do anything." See Somalia, where the UN really just stood aside in their "green zone" and let the militias pretty much do whatever in the rest of the city. That's not peacekeeping, that's feckless military adventurism that doesnt even TRY to solve the problem, and in many cases actually makes it WORSE.

How it failed, really. The Irish were abandoned by the UN so they fought on their own. Then they were captured when they ran out of bullets. Although that movie is pinpoint accurate, it's crazy.

Which would cause 90% of the member states to leave and move everyone back to square one. Whose policy should it enforce? Some random member state's? The Security Council's? The UN in its current form and the work it is able to do are nothing short of miracles, even when you take its shortcomings into consideration.

What the UN _should_ do is strictly enforce more aggressive human rights protection policies. The UN should focus on benefiting the civilians and the innocents rather than take sides or just stand by and watch. The UN should also be more responsible for their forces, if they are in grave danger, they _must_ be supported at all costs. The Seige of Jadotville should not have happened if the UN bothered to help their own soldiers...

The Srebrenica disaster they talk about also heavily involved Dutch UN troops. They were the ones guarding the enclave.

Bastiaan Wiltjer and they were left by the UN general (French Guy) and the Dutch politicians. They wern’t alloud any airsupport. So there was no chance to fight of the serbs. Also the commander was not a tough Guy, but his men praised him.

Oh! Oh my! I didn’t expect a reply- I generally as a rule of thumb tend to like most every Sabaton History video, especially since it combines the best of both worlds. As for the video, I’m curious if perhaps the Serb-Muslim conflict is something worth covering a some point especially with the UN. As strange as it sounds I’d like to hear you talk about the more personal perspective of the commander whose hands were politically bound, only able to what I have heard to be stand unarmed in the face of the militants, but aside from that it was a fascinating video as always! Also, I’d like to put fourth a petition to make the Spanish word, “Sabado” which means “Saturday” to “Sabaton.” Edit: I believe I was actually thinking of the Rwandan Genocide, apologies. Or maybe I am not?
