Sabaton History

3 жыл бұрын

Terrorism might be one of mankind's oldest weapons. Since antiquity, horrific violence and assassinations were used to overthrow supposed tyrants and strike fear into the heart of the public.
The French Revolution at the end of the 18th century, saw terrorism evolving into its modern form. Political opponents, counter-revolutionaries, or simply sympathizers of the "old order", were targeted and eliminated in a wave of terror. Political murder became romanticized.
Throughout the centuries until today, terror persists as a weapon of the few against the masses, in an effort to change society by force. Nothing made that clearer than the terrorist attacks against the United States on 9/11 2001.

11 September 2001 was my Obi Wan Kenobi moment. I didn't know it had happened, but at the time it did I felt this awful feeling. It was only later I realised what had happened, & the fact it coincided with the time I felt awful. "It was like hundreds of voices suddenly cried out in terror, & were suddenly silenced." And those what, three thousand??? Those deaths changed the world as we know it.

So here's a reason for contraversy that I didn't see addressed: stoking the flames of "Islamophobia." Despite myself being Muslim, I don't actually think that this song would cause Islamophobia, nor does bringing up the subject of Islamic Terrorism. But, I'm not like other Muslims in Western countries, I'm not particulary sensitive about the issue. Others, however, fear that the very reminder that Muslims did something bad, will just give ammunition to White Supramecists. I for one believe that notion to be false, as any mature human who's sound of mind will know everyone's done something vile in their history, and White Supramecists will hate us regardless. Either way, I think we shouldn't forget that this method of "warfare" exists. My second take: I personally consider the French Revolution to be the first true Socialist revolution: The working class rising up and violently toppling the rich in order to achieve equality. Hell, they did away with the "madam" and "miossur" (misspelled for sure) in exchange for "citizen" in much the same vein that Socialists refer to each other as "comrade." Of course, it eventually failed, and France ended up under the rule of a single man, much like every other Socialist country that's ever existed.

"Any religious person keep religions to themselves and not forcing others to believe what we believe." I absolutely agree with the statement, but I have to point to your Quran and its passage of "death to unbelievers". Sure, not all Muslims agree with its statement, but more than a few bad apples follow it to the letter or chose to look the other way when it enacted. This kind of statement either doesn't exist or has been thrown out of most religions. It really shows us that it's a VERY one-sided issue and it requires reformation from within.

"people were on the edge of panic attack". I remember that day very distinctly because I went to a Blind Guardian show that happened to take place mere hours after the Bataclan attack. Next to me was standing a woman in a full niqab. She had a bag next to her on the floor and she kept pulling her head into her dress to look at her phone (with the light you could tell that's what she was doing). In the crowd I noticed a very distinct circle of empty space around us (which got bigger every time she checked her phone), and people all around kept looking at her, then looking down at her bag, then looking back at her, all with serious stink eye. I felt bad for her. In wasn't her fault some damn fools did something damn foolish in the name God. (and I found it odd that all those people completely forgot that all of us, including that woman, had our bags thoroughly checked at the door)
@CherokeeRoses
@CherokeeRoses 3 жыл бұрын
@@perfectlypopsicle492 it sucks for that woman. But in my opinion, you can't really blame people for being terrified and suspicious after such atrocities JUST took place in the name of Allah. I was not there he, but the way you phrase it, she was acting kind of suspicious anyway. Wearing a niqab, a symbol of Islamic female oppression, doesn't help at that point either. Not saying people are right to ostracize her, but I do get it in a way. People are terrified for their lives and highly on edge after a terrorist attack in their country. Unfortunately, that's exactly what those terrorists want. To divide and scare us.

@@CherokeeRoses - "you can't really blame people for being terrified and suspicious" Don't get me wrong, I felt bad but I totally understood the reactions... and I'd be lying if I said the same thought hadn't crossed my mind too (it's why I'd noticed the outfit and the bag and the phone). It's human nature (and intelligent) to think self-preservation. " that's exactly what those terrorists want." I took a logical approach. The venue always has bag searches, and given the timing, security was extraordinarily heightened. They were rummaging through everyone's bags like airport security, and it's a well-contained entrance. There was simply no way someone could get a bomb-in-a-bag in there, so my brain concluded "terrorists want me to be afraid of this woman, but there's no need to be... enjoy the show"

I'm kinda shocked that the Provisional Irish Republican Army / The Troubles weren't mentioned, though I understand it may be a sore topic. I've often heard that modern terrorist bombing tactics came from the pIRA, but I guess i'm wrong - and/or that it could be considered more paramilitary than terrorism? I'm not sure.

Maybe it came down to time. I was surprised they didn't walk about white supremacists more since most terror attacks (at least in the U.S.) are committed by white supremacists. Or what about cartels? Or state sponsered terrorism against religious groups in southeast asia? Or indian terrorism against ethnic and religious minorities? And same in Pakistan? Maybe their definition (for the purposes of this video) of terrorism is very narrow? Like, large political movements that come about as a result of terrorism? Honestly, there's just so much to cover, maybe the most relevant to the audience was picked. I think maybe it's because there is a more unique ideology with the groups the covered. I don't think it had to do with it being paramilitary, because all those islamic groups mentioned are paramilitary groups, some are even governments.

And there in lies the main difference between chrisitianity and Islam. If Christians follow the bible closely, they will see that it encourages the obedience to your government. As they are considered a rod to be used by God to punish the unjust. Which consequently, Is why some governments receive harsh judgement too. You see, though chrsitians have been violent throughout history, the bible encourages violence as only a last resort. "As far as it is possible to you, live at peace with everyone." So for those of you who may compare Christians to islamists, remember that difference.
@TheKode1974

In the name of God, no matter christianity or islam (or other religion), have been killed huge amount of people throughout history. It is not useful to compare religions, usually it creates more violence (and terrorism) between religions. That is thing that we see today often and that is reason why Sabaton did not played "In the name of God", in their gig in Paris after Paris terrorist attacks. Normal people should create understanding between religions, not hate.

Hmm, I would have said that Guy Fawkes and his conspirators were the first terrorists I knew of, though there are some key differences between that and the Reign of Terror - primarily the targeting. While Fawkes did target a civilian institution, it was specifically Parliament that he was after. (Nevermind that if he'd succeeded, he'd have killed many times as many servants and functionaries as actual Members of Parliament). As a Canadian, I can safely say that an attack on Parliament by a religious extremist certainly provokes that same sense of outrage and violation that I've seen in people from countries that suffered terrorist attacks against ordinary citizens. (For anyone who doesn't know about this, it happened in 2014, when a single gunman killed the soldier standing guard at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier in Ottawa, then charged up Parliament hill and into the main building. It ended when the sergeant-at-arms (a normally ceremonial title given to an old guy who carries a mace that represents the Queen into Parliament at the start of each session...because yes Canada has weird pomp and circumstance built into how government works) shot him with the sidearm 99% of Canadians didn't even know he was required to carry.) When you consider the magnitude of what Guy Fawkes had planned, the ceremonial burning of Fawkes in effigy that continues to this day starts to make more sense. (I mean, it doesn't - at 500 years after the fact, it's a *bit* much, but you can understand the anger needed to start that kind of tradition) But yeah, if your definition of terrorism requires targeting ordinary civilians rather than those in positions of power, Guy Fawkes would not qualify. And most of the other incidences of civilians being targeted to spread fear that predate the reign of terror were by military forces, or primarily had other goals (Viking raids, for instance, were primarily motivated by the profitability of looting rich, poorly defended areas, the fear it spread was mostly a side effect). Personally, I'd argue that a military force is entirely capable of committing terrorism, but that opens so many cans of worms when you look at 20th century history - particularly conflicts like WWII and the Vietnam War - that I'm not going to go there - this is already a long enough comment.)
