Despite the country's higher education institutions churning out thousands of qualified graduates every year, many struggle to find jobs after graduation. This situation is not only frustrating for young people, but it also has serious implications for the country's economy, with a huge impact on the growth trajectory of the country.
In 2023, Statistics SA reported that approximately 3,4 million young people within the ages 15 - 24 are neither in education, or training, or employed. About 50,4% of the 7,8 million unemployed persons do not have matric, and only 39,5% have completed matric. Almost 7% of the unemployed had other tertiary qualifications, while 2,7% were graduates.
We talk to unemployed graduates.
32 years Kyle Arries. He studied B Com general at the University of the Western Cape. He completed it in 2017. He was unemployed for 2 years, then he worked for a construction company for a year, then he became part of the Yes Program, an initiative by Youth@WORK, which places unemployed youth.
28 year LLB Graduate Thandiswa Moleleki. She graduated from the University of North West, and is based in the North West Province.
She got into an internship and served articles for two years until July 2023. She has been trying to find employment. She says she spends time watching court cases online, and her interest is Family Law.

Bsc. Chemical engineer with no job for 2 years after my contract ended. So many unsuccessful interviews. The only place successful wanted me to work 100 hours a week for entry level pay, and they wondered why everyone who joined left.

Studied electrical engineering and because of 2 year hunting I've ended up changing career to mining. When someone says they'll never change because of passion I'll just simply say you have never been hungry because I've applied for everything cleaning, security, gardening etc.

impela, I havent watched this interview but I find it funny when people think this country is a place to only find employment in your own field. also, too much of choosing degrees based on passion rather than employment availability. i wanted engineering but ended up doing accounting where i had a definite job lined up. But also when you take a job outside your field of study, why cant you keep looking for your preferred job while youre there? youre not losing any experience in your field by doing that but youre learning how to be a worker, but people seem to prefer unemployment

Clearly you've never been hungry while holding an honour's degree in the profession you have so much passion for. Hunger will make you start and finish something knowing you'll have better employment opportunities @mondliedwin4857

this unemployment issue is so much bigger than them or us students or those have graduated anyway. The government with the literal power to make a difference can't even fix it after so many years and she thinks they are their own problem. Starting a business in this economy without support is just as difficult why do u think its so hard to create jobs??? It is driven by the consumer side...low economic growth and if the consumer is not buying you can't grow as a business or have economic growth...consumers most people have no money to support all these businesses they want or expect us young people to start. I say this as a Bcom student majoring in finance and economics... so i am studying the same degree that this one graduate studied btw.

Also my question is how are we supposed to know as the youth what jobs are in demand?? Are we all supposed to be doctors now... thats not realistic
