As South Africa marks Heritage Month, the plight of the Khoi-San community and other marginalized groups remains a cause for concern. From allegations of Discrimination, inadequate delivery of services, and landlessness, these communities seem to be at the receiving end of the country's myriad of challenges. This is despite efforts by the government and relevant departments to address these challenges. Tonight we ask, Who Is South Africa's First Nation? To help us unpack the topic I'm joined in Studio by Kgosi Thabo Seatlholo who is the Chairperson of the National House of Traditional and Khoi-San Leaders, as well as Khwe/Xam Activist Mr Neville Felix. Joining me virtually is the Chairperson of the National Khoi-San Council, Mr Cecil le Fleur.

When you say that their ancestry is mostly Malay / Indonesian, what evidence or data is the basis of your claim? I have been to the Coloured neighbourhoods in Cape Town and I can clearly see that they have the Khoisan features. What you are correct about in my view: many Black South Africans have Khoisan ancestry just like so-called "Coloureds". I would even say that the Khoisan element is more prominent in some local Xhosa and Tswana-Sotho groups and clans than among Cape Coloureds. There are some groups falling under the Xhosa identity, which actually almost look like pure Khoisan. They probably have more Khoisan ancestry, than Nguni, but due to cultural admixture and assimilating into the wider Xhosa nation have taken on Xhosa identity. That are the complexities of identity which many simple-minded people fail to grasp.

I like your thinking sir, we argue and go in circles over matters which if seriously unpacked, translate to our own insecurities about who we are as human beings. So, if we leave all this non-sensical talk about who owns the land rightfully [we talk in the past, a past which cannot be changed], and we concentrate on the today reality, then perhaps we may stand a chance to look around the room and recognise that there is one commonality and that is, we are human. Then also, may we recognise that we need to look around us, at the composite mess we need to clean up and look ahead, together, without prejudice nor compromise, because its not about us who are here today, but about those who come after us.

I must agree with the conversation that has ensued in this interview. What do I agree with? The dream that was painted for us [South Africa] in 1994, is a dream that has not translated into the dream nor it attachments in the legislative framework. South Africa as a "young man or woman" of 25 years, is in the present day rightfully positioned to voice the reality of how differently that dream has been interpreted and translated. It is time, whether we like it or not, that South Africa will have to decide to come together or depart from each other (how that pans out out we do not know) - to come to a hard realisation that 2024-2027 will be a time for all the nations within South Africa to sit down, with calm mind and spirit, to paint the true democracy vision for South Africa. May I add, that all who is of Africa's soil - we as Africans never had boundaries - should be the owners and leaders in creating that the 2028 Shared South African Vision, with a new and never practiced nor implemented before, 2123 Plan for South Africa. Yes a 100-Year-South-Africa-Strategy. We are finally awake!

Colonization of our continent caused all this division. Same thing they did in Rwanda, divided them and told that you are better than the others, that's what caused the genocide in Rwanda, so everywhere they went they made sure that people are divided in order for them to control well. And many who called themselves Khoisan today are not khoisan. The really Khoisan are Black light skinned from their hair you can tell, but colonizers created all this confusion and differences. @@francoiswilliams There is no division between "Black" and "Khoisan", since Khoisan are a Black African ethnicity just like AmaXhosa or Tswana people. The National Party regime deliberately created confusion to support their white Afrikaner claim on South Africa, by saying that 99% of Black South Africans were not indigenous to South Africa, arguing that only the tiny minority of pure Khoisan were indigenous. This false narrative has been debunked multiple times by credible researchers and it has been clearly shown why this narrative was deliberately propagated by the likes of Verwoerd in an attempt to legitimise their illegit policies.

The bushmen "inhabited" (I put it in inverted commas because they were not sedentary) SA first. The Bantus arrived in beginning in AD 300 (1, 700 years ago). The Europeans first arrived in the late 15th century (over under 550 years ago). The difference between the arrival of whites and Bantus is that the Bantu migrations are not considered to be "conquests" in anthropology. In fact, Bantus have khoisan ancestry/admixture ranging from 20% to 40% (peaks in Xhosas), and there was also considerable cultural mingling between the two macro-groups. As for Coloureds, it's so embarassing seeing them claim Khoisan ancestry considering most of their ancestry is European and Asian. In fact, Xhosas have more khoisan ancestry than coloureds. LOL. That's all there is to this matter.

That aside, Afrikaans is neither a relevant, nor a useful language if we look at the bigger picture. Even Dutch people find it funny that we still use an outdated, agrarian 18th century dialect of their language in South Africa to this day. It's not like English, which while admittedly arriving on our shores in the context of Colonialism, at least has international significance and is useful from a pragmatic perspective as a lingua france of all South Africans and as a language of trade, technology, academia and international relations!

Nama, Griqua, etc are mixed VOC colonial products not aboriginal tribes. This is where the ahistoricity comes in. It's inorganic. Like already stated, the pastoralist were also partial ancestors of mixed race people. But pretending an organic native evolution, like the Xhosa or Tswana, is untrue. There's a reason why the moribund LATIN of khoe'gowab languages (ancestral to modern click languages that millions speak and still spoken by 1%) is classified as black. And there's a reason why an in-colony Asian-Afri-Caucasian population doesn't exist in an organic native culture. Xhosas meanwhile practise millennia old Khwe culture like ingqhiti. Organically.

@@cecildennis-o9l Again, you are mixing fact and fiction. Many Khoisan have been assimilated into Xhosa and Tswana-Sesotho identities. Regarding "Coloureds": SOME Coloured communities consist of Khoisan descendants, others consist mostly of people who were brought to the Cape as labourers and slaves from foreign shores such as Malaysia. So, to be precise: Coloured is an umbrella term. Some of the people that are covered by the term are indigenous descendants, but others are descending from foreigners or a mix of both indigenous and foreign ancestry. Clearly all the Black Bantu Nguni people are NOT indigenous to SA . When they arrived here they found another people here already, that is the KHOI and SAN. Another interesting fact for you: the ancient home of the Khoisan is most likely the Horn of Africa, so they too at some point travelled from one region within the African landmass to another. I consider Khoisan and Nguni and Sotho-Tswana indigenous TO THE CONTINENT OF AFRICA. Humanity didn't start in Western Cape my friend! Studying and reading and understanding history and googling does not qualify one to be of a certain ethnic group. Yes the government has failed the Khoi and the San people just as much as it has failed the so called Nguni people. A few african people that are living a soft life in this country must never be mistaken with the 80% of our people that are living the life of poverty and inequality. Bantu and and Khoekhoe people in this country are forgotten... a select few Bantu and coloured people and a vast majority of Europeans now are living a life of kings and queens in south africa. There is no such thing as a first nation, there are africans, how does one say Khoisan are the first nation when they are found all over africa. Bantu and Khoekhoe people lived together for centuries all over africa.. Yes the Khoi were perhaps the first to encounter Jan Van Riebeeck bcz they were in what is now called the Cape but that doesn't mean that the other parts of the country were empty bcz they were not as they had the Bantu people as well as the Khoi people too.

It's true they should be given some credits, after all every south African counts, the wanting the land and be treated as kings is a dream. Why don't just peoples integrate and build a country that benefits everyone not the one that everyone want a piece of a slice for them en family. You want power, go be a politician or some related nonsense like everyone

They actually are ! They were reclassified by previous govt legislation to be classified as coloured. The KHOI clans are NAMA , GRIQUA , KORANA etc, they are all officially classified as coloured.

@@cecildennis-o9lthey actually are not and you know they are not. Coloureds are multiracial the Khoi and San people are not multiracial. It is fine for you all to say you have khoi and/or San ancestry, but to keep lying about being Indigenous or being "Khoisan" is disrespectful. Black people actually die because they are Black and here you all are trying to hijack 2 different Black identities just to claim land. Just simply say that you all are Multiracial people who want land and better conditions in South Africa.

How ridiculous this government is to turn the 1st nation away because they have no land and villages. This issue has to be dealt with by a Ministry of First Nation people.

Who fought for this country??? U are taking chances. U were selling us to the Boers not knowing that we can win back this country, now that we have died and resisted all the suffering without selling any body u are now coming back to claim. Hence u are not trusted with anything, u are not trustworthy, no backbone at all. To have away language and culture is evident to what I just said.

Even in this "new" South Africa we are seen as "less then". In the apartheid years we were fighting along side our black brothers and sisters for change and when they got into power and became the new masters they forgot about us who struggled along side them. Even if you look at BEE and how far down the rating we as khoi/"coloured" falls into(Indians/Asian fall almost into the same rating category, and not originally being from this country). This pushing our people to keep struggling even after "the struggle" has past. Why cant we be equal to those we struggled with? Im not saying we the first nation and therefor we should be placed above everyone else. All im asking for is to be equal but it seems even that is to much to ask for. In the past we could only watch white people fighting over our land and today we watch the black people doing the same while just forgetting about us or like i see some comments saying that we are not even from this land. Its true South Africa has "changed" we were first chased from our land by the whites and today it seems the blacks are our new racist masters who wants to continue the chasing of the khoi/"coloured" people.
