Agreed! I'm sure we'll have lot's more collaborative projects in the future! I would like to do something in the future involving the history and applications of tengpai. But, it was great to have you visit and get to exchange thoughts and ideas on my favorite Chinese weapon! #teamdao

That’s a good point at the end. One thing LK Chen’s stuff and other similar companies making authentic historical replicas has clued me in on is how much of a continuum Asian swords are on, and whether it was flow back and forth between neighboring cultures and the Chinese heartland, or design elements developing independently and moving around, there’s a lot more similarities between Asian swords no matter where they are made. Like, Kieth you mentioned Tibetan swords, and I think some indigenous Taiwanese dao and Filipino blade types have a lot of similarities with Chinese dao from various earlier dynasties, especially the Song and Tang. It’s all very educational, lol. It makes Asian swords seem more familiar and less mysterious or exotic to this Westerner to have a more diachronic and cross cultural big picture of them. Some things I’d like to see LK Chen do is a Ming Shuangshou Jian and a late Qing duan jian. I think Fire and Iron have a Qing style jian that is on the shorter side but at a higher price point.

Good points! Those models would be interesting to see LK reproduce, for sure. Thank you for watching, and thank you for your thoughts and opinions! I may bring up the shuangshou jian to KK to pass along to LK; there's really none of those out on the reproduction market, and imo there should be! 👊🙏

I am glad to hear that our videos help demystify East Asian swords! Also a shuangshoujian would be very interesting indeed! They are very rare but the similarities to medieval longswords could draw many HEMA people to it.

Eventually LK will release a reprod of that Jin/Yuan Dynasty Dao and that one interestingly has a similar blade profile, weight distribution to the katana.

The Qi Jia Dao was again modelled after the katana, named after general Q Ji Guang, who defeated the Japanese pirates, and adopted the katana. Qi jia means Qi family.

Great info on the swords, nice to learn some history on the swords; especially on the Woyaodao, which is like my katana swords, I’m thinking about ordering one from Lk Chen! You told me that they both had about the same feeling,I would love training with a Woyaodao! Thank you for the video, I’m going to watch Part 1!

Couple things. 1) I agree butterfly swords & Tibetan ki-tri would be good to see. 2) I'd also like a 2-handed ox tail (cold steel sold one once calling I "bagua dao" but I have no idea if that is a proper name) 3) for those of us not well versed in Chinese history a chart showing the different dynasties & their corresponding western dates would be helpful. Could have it the end of video or maybe on screen 8n a spot where it's just background.

I bought a nui wei dao and was quite dissappointed in the finish of the blade . There were nicks on the the blade and a very poor sharpening job .im a sucker though and bought another sword from lk . Really hope its better in quality.

Awesome video, thank you! How would you compare the handling of the Niu Wei and Wo Yao daos for the purpose of kung-fu forms? Would the Wo Yao Dao feel too forward-heavy and "clumsy"? I own the Niu Wei and despite the point of balance being fairly close to the guard, I find myself wishing it was slightly more nimble.
@saberserpent1134
@saberserpent1134 2 ай бұрын
Niuweidao is definitely going to suit for forms of most styles. Woyaodao is more for a person that cuts targets frequently; it doesn't lend itself to TCMA forms very well, imo.
