I remember watching happy tree friends on high school computer. It was the best flash animations id ever seen at the time. We'd crowd around the screen so the homeroom teacher couldn't see what was on the screen.

It is mind boggling to think there is now an entire generation that has no idea what HTF is. But the flip side is that there is an entire generation of people to show it to and watch how they react.

I only saw a few scenes from this show but I remember this. It's the kind of show that you only need to see a few seconds of it for it to stick with you forever

Fun Fact: the reason why htf didnt have guns was because according to one of the ppl on the htf team said that killing with guns would be " too easy".

Fun fact: When Flippy “flips out” he isn’t just killing people because he wants to. He begins to hallucinate that everyone is a soldier and he is back in war, which is why he kills them.

I never watched HTF as a kid either, but my Dad introduced me to it recently and now I'm hooked. I love pretty much everything about the show. though sometimes the Gore can be a bit much, I actually like that about it. I feel that the use of Gore gives the series a sense of realism that stands out against other Cartoons, using real-life physics in cartoony situations to create a contrast that pairs like cheese with fine wine. Another thing I love is the characters and their delivery. I feel that they can be very inclusive at times, being that some characters are Disabled and Flippy actually suffers from DID. For that reason, he's actually a comfort character to me, because I had DID at one point, though I was eventually cured of it through Therapy. However, I did have a different form (I was never dangerous and I had several Alters). I also suffer from PTSD and honestly, his whole character just makes me feel like someone feels what I'm going through. I also love Lumpy, because he reminds me a lot of Goofy, who's one of my favourite Disney characters. I also feel that something beneficial is that most of the words (though not all of them) are mumbled, which gives fans the ability to create their own Script for episodes, dub them and even make their own voices for Characters. None of the Characters have strong accents that I've noticed or features defining their heritage, so coming up with Races/Ethnicities for them and even drawing them as Humans is really fun, honestly. For example, I like to think Flippy is either Japanese or Russian for some reason and has a deeper voice. Designing features like that for every character just adds a little magic to the series, because it's something that you yourself can add to the story. When they came out too we had to wait for episodes. So it didn't get old too quick. Every time an episode came out we got excited.

I remember once, my parents stumbled upon HTF (Happy Tree Friends) and they called me, and they told me to WATCH it. By that time, I already knew what HTF was, so I tried getting out of there, but in the end, I had to watch not one, but TWO whole episodes of HTF, and ending with my mom saying, "See, that wasn't so bad". I'll never forgive them for that.

To be fair, Happy Tree Friends was my childhood and I still kinda like it to this day.

You hit the nail on the head by saying that the whole formula behind Happy Tree Friends eventually became its own limitation. I love the series, but I won't deny that HTF is a classic example of a franchise that is still stuck in the past. If Mondo Media ever decides for a revival, they would need to make the show evolve beyond its basic premise.

Early 2000s internet was oddly charming. People did things for fun. I miss that.

What's ironic is that KZfaq is accepting it. They even used the characters for their videos in the official "KZfaq" channel.

Yeah, I remember seeing these video. I especially love revisiting Happy Tree Friends while watching this doctor react to the main deaths and injuries that happen in these videos.

When every Happy Tree Friends characters died at the end of the episode, they just revived in the next as if nothing ever happened and they be like "This is fine." It's basically Kenny from _South Park_ all over again.

Happy Tree Friends is a truly amazing show. The episodes seem completely normal until one of the Tree Friends accidentaly die, and then it turns to pure chaos. There are even Friday Night Funkin’ mods based off of Happy Tree Friends!

We actually analysed happy tree friends in our psychology classes, whether or not it fulfills the official qualities for s "TV show for children" It's amazing how much of the show is actually following these qualities. Violence in TV shows isn't that bad for kids. You have this *gets hurt but still lives* thing even in Tom and Jerry and the likes. The bug problem with HTF is that their violence is LASTING. It's not s big oof and then laughter. It's torture and lasting suffering. THAT'S the part that makes it soooo suffering.

My mom put The G4 series on for me when I was about three when it first came out, and apparently I loved it. Explain perfectly why I still love it as an adult

i remember being a little innocent kid and having my "edgy" friend show this series to me. we were fixated on it for a good 3 hours, and i couldn't stop watching it, but i had nightmares for weeks after that. ah, childhood.

I remember watching this in 1st with my brother because it was on Netflix for kids but we stopped after maybe two episodes but now that I look at this show it’s literally terrifying 🧍🏽‍♀️

I remember stumbling upon HTF back when I was around 7, and it stuck to me like glue. I showed this show to my cousin once (she's older than me btw), she was shocked at first but then started to like as it went on. I actually remember watching HTF compilations on youtube of various ships in the show. My personal favorite ship was Flippy x Flaky(pretty sure its still a popular ship to this day) and honestly it's still one of my comfort ships. I blame this show for my numbness to visuals of bl00d and g0re, but that's okay lol

I think the only other memorable thing about this is that the writers of this show ended up writing the stories for the current Sonic the Hedgehog games starting with Sonic Colors.

I just recently got into happy tree friends because my husband grew up watching the episodes, especially Flippy. Sometimes it's nice to just turn off your brain and watch some chaos unfold.

I am a gen z who discovered Happy Tree Friends because my babysitter found it on dvd second hand and would put it on for me while my sister (who had a terrible imune system) needed care. She eventually realized what she was letting me watch. Now I'm kinda f***ed up. So, yeah.

Fun fact that I don’t think a lot of people know. Either fall out boy was a fan of the series or the other way around and they ended up having an animated music video for their song Carpal Tunnel of Love. Which I can’t remember is it’s own episode or inserting a version of Fall Out Boy as happy tree friends character and their usual chaos ensues.

Fun fact: the writers for Happy Tree Friends also wrote MadWorld and many of the recent Sonic games. I have no idea why Sega thought people who write super violent stuff would be good choices to write the stories of Sonic games, but they’ve always just done whatever the hell they wanted.

Honestly what made Htf so interesting to me is how flippy is just a war vet and how everyday things can trigger an episode. Even with like two episodes I think having him trying to fight off the having an episode. Especially the tiger Bomb episode showing why he’s like this. This premise got me into violet evergarden

my sister loved this show so much when we were kids. i tried watching it with her and it made me cry, i was 13 and she was 10

This is "not suitable for children", yet is only watched by kids who find it exhilarating to see something gruesome yet not _too_ real. The episodes are repetitive - yes, there are some imaginative scenarios and nice animation, but it's not meant for adults to seriously watch. It's for kids to share with their friends and hide from their parents, getting to feel like they're breaking some rules and seeing a forbidden glimpse into the adult world. For that purpose, it works wonderfully. Kinda like adult magazines or slasher flicks back in the day, and... whatever is the modern equivalent, maybe those questionable Elsa/Spiderman KZfaq vids or whatever is happening on TikTok currently?

You know the internet was really the wild west when this show was your childhood compared to kids now being cocomelon

I completely forgot this series existed. My older sisters watched this and i got curious about what they were watching one day. They both told me "this isn't a kid's cartoon. You're not gonna like it" i didn't believe them cause i was stubborn kid.. but when i saw some of the blood and gore i walked away cause i didn't like it and they were indeed right XD

I have to say though, the episodes where Flippy fights himself is a masterpiece.

Yeah, back when I was little, me and my sister saw this and thought it was a kids show. We watched the one which is flippy’s birthday and me and my sister were scared when things are going down hill, so we both hide in the hallway, then my dad comes and we told him to turn it off. Now I’m grown up and see it again and it’s quite like wtf.😅

The weird thing is, just drawings of gore like those doodles aren't getting me all messed up, but the animations creep me out, it is just something about the fact they are moving, the fact you know it is coming.

Actually, HTF (Happy Tree Friends) was released on December 24, 1999. Not early or mid-2000s.

The idea of changing the series name slightly every episode brings to mind the rearranging of the letters on the sign in _Fawlty Towers._

In the commentary of the DVD series, the creators talk about how they didn't want to use guns because it felt too easy and uncreative. I think the closest they came was having Flippy and Evil Flippy fire staples at one another in the "Double Whammy" episodes.

This was quite an era. It had a huge fandom on DeviantArt and everything.

I searched for happy and got happy tree friends when I was little. When i first watched it i started shaking uncontrollably for about 5 episodes

The fact that they would sometimes sob while in pain made it so much worse. I didn’t mind cartoon gore usually because they wouldn’t be fazed by it at all. Their reactions felt so real and guttural for younger me.

I didn't watch it when I was a kid but I did play some of their games on Y8, especially the ones where you can interact with them by making certain choices and it didn't faze me at all. I never saw anything awful about them.

I find it amusing that HTF merch did very well in Japan, these creature designs are in keeping with the kawaii tradition, much like Hello Kitty etc. I doubt the vast majority of Japanese customers knew of the merch's grisly origin.

I was volunteering for my local library once back in high school and saw that the Happy Tree Friends DVD Collection was placed in the kids section, didn't think much of it until a parent went to go grab it for their kid... had to try and calmly explain to the parent that this was not, in fact, for children, and was quite gruesome. The parent thanked me and walked away, and I ended up taking home the DVD collection at the end of the day for my friend.

I discovered Happy Tree Friends from Yahoo audibles (remember those? Yahoo messenger was a thing lmao). Seeing the Happy Tree Friends audibles made me want to watch the show because they are so cute and I love their designs! Although some flash games would feature them as the loading screen and I thought it was just a parody 'cuz that's what flash does... The toy crane machine animation... Yeah it took me to watch an actual episode to discover that Happy Tree Friends is indeed that violent and actually traumatized me. I remember the first snippet episode I ever watched was the Christmas special with them setting up a Christmas tree and then the star slipped out of grasp and injured someone. That said my interest on the show resurfaced because my friend on sixth grade recommended to watch it. I eventually got used to the violence when you considered they were very ridiculous in nature. Also I just really appreciate the characters and their designs, that I watched the whole series from the very first episode up to the Lammy episodes. (I can't remember if I already watched the latest Still Alive episodes but I think I watched at least one of them). This is the only show where I could handle this level of gore.

The only part of the HTF fandom I got into was when artists drew the characters as attractive anime men/women lmao. Like seriously some of the stuff I found online were genuinely good art

Fall Out Boy's music video for The Carpal Tunnel of Love is literally an entire HTF episode. They even have a HTF version of the band (yes, they all get mangled badly).

G4 was the absolute epitome of tech t.v. back in the day especially when they had shows like Cinematech, Cheat (before Kristen Holt hosted it), Arena, Attack of the Show with Kevin and Olvia Munn, and my absolute favorite out of them all was X-play with Adam and Morgan Webb

Hell yeah, bro. I laughed my ass off at Happy Tree Friends growing up. It was nice to have real consequences for the characters goofing around compared to all the super PG stuff that I was allowed to watch on TV. At some point a long while back, I picked up the OG box set when I bought something else at Best Buy, was on the way to the checkout counter, saw it sitting literally under a happy smiling sun sign that said "FOR KIDS," had a laughing fit and bought a copy.

The one cable channel that I think would allow this cartoon to air is Comedy Central. I could imagine them airing an episode right after South Park.
