Dive into the vibrant and eclectic world of "Aztlán," the 1983 masterpiece by Sacbé. This album, a confluence of jazz fusion and contemporary jazz, is a testament to the innovative spirit of the Toussaint brothers - Eugenio, Enrique, and Fernando - and their vision to create a musical identity that resonates with Latin-American roots while pushing the boundaries of jazz.
Recorded at Excalibur Studios in Studio City, California, "Aztlán" showcases Sacbé's evolution and their collaboration with renowned musicians such as Clare Fischer, Milcho Leviev, and Luis Conte. Fischer’s electric piano on "Mijo" adds a nuanced layer to Enrique Toussaint’s composition, while Leviev’s melodica on "Si Perdiera La Vida" infuses Fernando Toussaint’s track with a hauntingly beautiful melody. Conte's percussive genius provides a rhythmic backbone that elevates the entire project.
The album opens with "Mijo," a track that immediately sets the tone with its rich textures and dynamic interplay. "Eje Central" and "Iztaccihuatl" continue this journey, blending traditional influences with modern jazz elements. "Son" and "Don't Tell Me, I Know (For Zawinul)" pay homage to jazz legends while asserting Sacbé's unique voice. The title track, "Aztlán," encapsulates the essence of the album - a homage to the mythical land, embodying a blend of cultural heritage and musical innovation. Closing with the poignant "Si Perdiera La Vida," the album leaves listeners with a sense of reflection and profound musical appreciation.
"Aztlán" not only reflects the technical prowess of Sacbé but also their deep emotional and cultural connection to their music. The band’s journey through financial challenges and creative collaborations culminates in an album that stands as a significant milestone in their discography.

WOW!! 1983....but timeless!! What we have here is a virtual smorgasbord of masterful jazz "smatterings"!! Corea/RTF/Weather Report.........the list goes on. IMHO all we need now is a more of an "electric edge" like the inclusion of a Scott Henderson guitar!! Thank you flac!! 🖤♠

Yes. Although, the real place of origin is the Chicomoztoc (the seven caves place) where the 7 nahua tribes came from: 1. Xochimilcas, 2. Tepanecas 3. Chalcas 4. Acolhuas 5. Tlahuicas 6. Tlaxcaltecas 7. Mexicas (Aztecs).

Aztec is a European term. Aztecs called themselves Mexicas (pronounced Mesh-ee-ka). If you go to Mexico's anthropology museum you'll never see the term Aztec. That's a term used by Alexander von Humboldt. Another way to colonise part of our history. He thought it sounded poetic and took it upon himself to name my ancestors, rather than learning what they themselves called each other. Not judging, though. Nor hating - just some trivia.

What Sacbé means?
@wtflac
@wtflac 5 күн бұрын
A sacbe, plural sacbeob, or "white road", is a raised paved road built by the Maya civilization of pre-Columbian Mesoamerica. Most connect temples, plazas, and groups of structures within ceremonial centers or cities, but some longer roads between cities are also known. The term "sacbe" is Yucatec Maya for "white road"; white perhaps because there is evidence that they were originally coated with limestone stucco or plaster, which was over a stone and rubble fill. Although great progress has been made on determining the roles of sacbeob in Maya society, the decision to construct sacbeob as opposed to smaller, less complicated paths is puzzling to experts. Without a profound reliance on beasts of burden to transport goods, it remains partially unclear why the Maya decided to expend so much labor constructing these impressive roads.
