Sacramento woman stuck with $4,000 bill to fix sidewalk in front of her home

People have long told us they think city taxes should cover sidewalk repairs. But these bills are going out, right when inflation is hitting people hard. A Sacramento woman called us when she got a surprise bill to fix the sidewalk in front of her house. The cost? $4,000.

Easy solution: if the sidewalk is her responsibility to maintain, she should set up a toll booth, and charge anyone wanting to walk across "her sidewalk" a usage fee; that should eventually pay for the repairs. But then she should continuentomcharge usage fees in order to ,maintain the sidewalk.

Also since it’s her property why not just get caution signs put it up for a few bucks and call it day? Or block that section. Such BS!

I don't think that you're familiar with the term public easement. She should have read the CC&Rs before she signed them.

The homeowners should excercise their rights to put this sidewalk issue on the upcoming voting ballot, that the city should be held responsible for sidewalk repairs, especially when the homeowners can't claim the sidewalk as their real estate property.

A 4" concrete grinder from Harbor Freight costs $75. Will take about 30 minutes to ensure there is no trip hazard. Nee concrete is not necessary. Fill crack with sealer or concrete. Done under $100. Might pay neighbor $25-$50 to do the work.

Thats what happened in my neighborhood. Only difference is they they threatened us with a lien on our house instead of a payment plan.

$4000 For 1/4 cubic yard of concrete. I can do it for $750 easy

meanwhile in new developments the city buys the sidewalks and paved roads from the developer and the developer gets reimbursed...how is it then homeowners are responsible when the development infrastructure is paid for by the government?

Developers pay the cost for ALL of the infrastructure on their developments and also pay for utilities extensions, substructure, XFMRs etc. they don't get reimbursed for any of that and also pay for and design public streets along with many other fees to school districts, fire districts etc. the city takes ownership of streets and utility infrastructure from developers and is liable for maintenance, not sure who is liable to maintain sidewalks as they are on property maintained by the homeowner.

I also got a bill for over $4000!! to fix corner sidewalk caused by wild root tree. I didn't plant that wild tree and I don't own the sidewalk why should I pay for something that is not mine???

If you live in an HOA they can tell you you cannot fence your front yard but if you live in the city of Sacramento you can put a fence around your property in the front 4 ft tall if you want to go taller you have to get it permitted you cannot fence off the sidewalk because it's public if your neighborhood does not have sidewalk sometimes the county or city will go through and install it if the first 5 to 10 ft of your driveway ramp depending on your area and your easement fails it's the responsibility of the local municipality city or county she needs to find an attorney because if they're trying to make her maintain it and telling her it's her property she should be able to fence it off if they're going to tell her it's easement and it's for public use than it is the city or county's responsibility to maintain it if that sidewalk is for public use and they are going to charge people for not maintaining the sidewalk in front of their home then I would tell them I'm going to have it removed and put grass or landscaping there and there won't be any f****** sidewalk in front of my home if the city doesn't want to maintain sidewalks the city doesn't have to install sidewalks where I live in California there's curb and gutter but there's no sidewalks an entire city of 500,000 people and there's no sidewalks

In some cases the home owner is responsible for the damage to the sidewalks. If they have a large tree in their front yard the tree sometimes grows it's roots and they will push up underneath the sidewalk. I know this because a neighbor of mine had that happen to them some years ago.

The sidewalk is public use, she doesn't own it, the city does. so why should she pay for it if the city needs to maintain it?

It doesn't belong to the city not when you own your own anything you do to that sidewalk anything you put on that sidewalk is basically yours you have to pay for any damages you park the cars on the sidewalk on the grass that's your s*** you got to pay for it not the city
