Bought a SAS Stylus for my V15 type V. Sounds great. I was mad at Shure for awhile when they stopped making the original stylus but the SAS sounds just as good.

The Sure V15 was the ultimate in hi compliance and tracking cartridge back in the day and it really suited low mass arms. I still have a V15 Mk 4 which has had little use. It works well in my Audio Technica AT1100 tone arm

Once they discontinued the V15 Type V many years back, I considered that moment to be the end of Shure cartridges, for the audiophile at least. I bought one as soon as I heard it wasn't going to be made anymore. While mega bucks MC cartridges can certainly perform better. I have not found a more well rounded SMOOTH and detailed performer for anywhere near it's original price. But it is sad that Shure is pulling out of making cartridges altogether.

I agree, their m97xe cart has not been able to perform as well as other ellipticals in their price point. However their M44-7's are legendary for DJs.

The message is that even things that have been around a while have to be dumbed down while just living on your brand name. This seems to have become a big part of the American production culture; especially as it increasingly relies on exports though not exclusively. Yes it is sad...

Just bought a new old stock stylus for my Shure M70EJ. I am sure it will sound great. I have a V15 III but it appears to have issues. I will dig it out again in hopes I just wired wrong the last time I tried it. Another big winner was the Shure RXP3. Amazing cartridge for it's time. I still have one original complete Shure RXP3 left. You just cannot go wrong with most any Shure cartridges period.

I have two Shure V-15-V cartridges in SME 3009 Series 2 tonearms, one non-detachable headshell, the other detachable. The non-detachable is on a Technics SL-110 DD two speed (33 & 45) turntable. The detachable is on a Thorens TD-124, 4 speed table. For that one I have another headshell with a Shure M91 cartridge with a 78 stylus making the changeout very quick. Over the years I went through several cartridges some MM, some MC -- finally settled on the Shures. Then the CD came in. Sorry to see them quitting the cartridge business.

My wife worked in the assembly line phono cartridges for more than 10 years and the truth felt bad for this news, I think this product could have given more and renew it with some design changes to make it even better but we will not know why they took this decision. I still work in this plant and it feels ugly to see such a great product disappear and leave the market since many still enjoy the fidelity of sound that these phono cartridges transmit. hopefully and take up the decision to return it to life and come with improvements for the client.

As a young man I used to take the train past Shure's Evanston plant, and wonder what was inside. I knew Shure as the company that made many of the microphones that the stars, and that I used in productions. I knew that they made cartridges, but not any that interested me. Shure's neighbor, Bell & Howell, maker of midrange projectors, was the first big name in that little industrial area to have troubles. In the '80s the last I heard of them was that they were readging Apple 2 computers in hope of regaining their slice of the education pie.I don't think it worked. Bell & Howell was founded in 1907. Shure's microphone line remains strong. My mic box is mostly Shure, and I use Shure wireless packs on occasion.

I've been using the M44-7 for years, and love it. I quickly ordered a replacement stylus upon hearing this sad news. Of course, now all these websites are taking the Shure products down, even Amazon removed the replacement stylus. I plan to keep mine in use for as long as possible. A replacement stylus was much cheaper than having to replace the entire cartridge, so now I'll at least have one backup stylus.

Such a shame. My first MM cartridge was a Shure M55E. Still got it in an original SME headshell - the ones full of 'lightening' holes. A warm an slightly woolly sound as I remember when compared to other cartridges of the period, but still good. SME and Garrard eh - I'll watch that with interest. Thanks Steve.

My first decent TT was the AR XA, around 1964, with a Shure M7D. At the time, they were located in Evanston, IL. Worked my way through the line until I discovered Stanton in early 70's. When I got back into TT's last July, I wanted a new 681EEE, but I tried the M97Xe because it was popular, highly recommended, and available new. How could I miss? Almost simultaneously, I ordered (thanks HiViNyws) a Nagaoka MP-110. Not a contest, right out of the packaging - I didn't even bother with breaking in the M97Xe. Also, have to wonder if outsourcing contributed to the demise of Shure carts as it has the downfall of so many other companies, but I suspect this was not their only internal problem.

The scale they depended on hasn't been there for a long time in the market they traditionally competed in for cartridges. They are smart not to continue pressing a bad position. Great memories, but.........
@StringerNews1
@StringerNews1 6 жыл бұрын
That's the long and short of it. The market is contracting, and despite a small wave of hipster interest, record players are not about to retake their position as the #1 way to listen to recorded sounds. They have to sell a whole lot of cartridges for $50 to turn a profit, and the time of that sort of volume has passed. They could try to compete at the high end, but have no experience there. Better to cut their losses and move on.

HH Scott, if any company could have owned their own production from raw materials to finished product, it was Shure. They were the biggest OEM for mass-produced turntables when the market was at its peak. How they missed that opportunity is a story that I'd like to know. Like most industries, it's not the cost of materials, it's the cost of labor that most affects the bottom line. Even if they had them all made in Shenzhen, China there's just not enough profit to support all those executives in Niles, IL who expect 6-figure salaries.
@amb3cog

StringerNews1 Yup. And that's how it goes. The execs expect to get rich, and expect their workers to have to get assistance from the state to survive. What a country. Lol And people are going after the people who need the assistance. Not the greedy executives. Makes sense right? smh

HH Scott, the current Shure HQ is a fancy designer building formerly occupied by an ad agency that made a bad decision and went bankrupt. The old office + factory wasn't fancy because every penny went into _growing_ the business. The current mindset in US business that says a business exists so that a select few at the top can live large has a side effect of the business failing sooner than later. A national economy built on this belief system is destined for a hard fall. I just hope I leave this earth before then.

Bummer. I like my M97XE but lament the giving away my V15III in the late 80s when I stupidly sold all my records. But, hey, I have about 1000 lps now. Guess I better buy a few replacement styli (is that the correct spelling?) before prices are jacked up. UPDATE. After watching this I promptly ordered a new stylus for my M97XE from eBay for $59.00. Just for grins and giggles I checked around today. Needle Doctor are out of stock. Greed has hit eBay with prices ranging between $79.00 and about $150 00. I use several carts depending on the record I play and the current stylus only has a few hours in it. So I should be good for a while. Guess I’ll replace it with a different cart when the new stylus expires. Should have ordered 2 or 3. Oh well 😔.

It could be price related, after all they do use diamond needles. It may be an increased demand by new manufacturers causing the price to go up. But it could also be that a supplier has shut down and they can't find another supplier selling at the same price.

On the positive side of the ledger, other cartridge makers likely will be happy to pick up on supply slack, in the absence of Shure. I wonder, though, if the supply chain problem, you speak of, portends a trend, that eventually has an effect, on the more widespread, general issue of affordability.
@StringerNews1
@StringerNews1 6 жыл бұрын
Of course there's a trend. 100 years ago the burgeoning buggy whip industrial complex went through much the same thing. When the masses switched to automobiles for good, tanners didn't sit idly by saying "whoa is me", they started thinking and created a _new_ market: driving gloves. What that means to the remaining artisinal buggy whip makers was that they too should get up off their duffs and retool the business.

No loss. Never been a fan. Poorly made. Back in the day at the peak of HiFi/ Stereo ('70's) I repped a competitive cart line. I traveled 6 states with a $5k Wild Heerbrugg stereo optic microscope showing closeups of stylus/ cantilever design and construction. One measurement I always did was stylus alignment on the cantilever. This included rotational alignment. I would typically find Sure's with 10 - 30 degree rotations from properly perpendicular elliptical alignment to cantilever. I actually ran into a number of V15s that were literally 90 degrees out of rotation. The ellipse was literally in line, rather than perpendicular to the cantilever. Other differences were lack of polish to the diamond, misaligned mounting studs, glue globs,.... Just plain poor quality control.

My hope is I will be as satisfied with the JICO SAS/R stylus for my V15V-MR as I am with the OEM stylus. Thing is, JICO is no longer offering that stylus since demand has vanquished stock and manufacturing capacity. Right now though, I'm still enjoying the V15V-MR with OEM stylus, which I perceive is squeezing everything there is out of the groove. Just now, I'm listening to the vinyl version Saxophone Colossus from Sonny Rollins, and I've got to tell ya, the Shure is delivering, in all manner, a better experience than my 24/192 download of same material.

I still use, very occasionally, a V15 Type IV and will continue to do so as long as the stylus wear is okay. Shure stopped making the V15 because of inability to resource a key material of the stylus, they said. Similarly, they have not made a replacement stylus for my V15 for some 15 years. Rather than risk significant money on a stylus from a third-party, all of which seem to be hit-and-miss at best, I'll move to a Nagaoka when the time comes. Given the unreasonable attachment people seem to have for the Type IV, I can probably ebay it to someone who want to play games over a replacement stylus.

The current Shure M97XE while decent enough isn't as good as the original M97 or M95 models from the 1980s (particularly the ones with the HE stylus). Those cartridges were one of the few which sported a truly flat response without the saddle in the midrange of the M97XE which more resembles the inferior "Encore" Shure cartridges of the 90s.

Shure doesn't currently have a moving coil cartridge in their (departing) product line, do they? I listen to primarily symphonic recordings (where I have a prayer of calibrating what the source sounds like), and my first moving coil cartridge was a true epiphany. I vowed never to go back to an MM cartridge. Was I wrong? I'm currently very satisfied with an AT-OC9ML/II Dual Moving MicroCoil model by AT. I think I know what the Chicago or Cleveland Orchestra should sound like. Not if loaded correctly. The V15 III and IV had output inductance which rendered them more sensitive to capacitive loading on phono inputs resulting in a rising top end. Loading it down with higher capacitance gives it a flat response. Mine sounds smooth a silk. The V15 V doesn't suffer this problem.

Regarding Shure cartridges its over since decades. They just didnt announced it. I mean the M97Xe even isnt a equal quality replacement for older middle class models like the M95HE, M97HE or M120HE. Now they just bin the remaining program because it doesnt fit the calculated profit margin. As simple as that. If the M97Xe would be a better cartridge than it is,be sure it would be over 200 USD by now following the steep rise in prices for decent quality MMs in the last decade. The lame excuse they provided is obviously a lie,because other producers havent that problem have they ?

All those cheap Chinese turntables with Audio Technica cartridges. who's manufacturing turntables using shure cartridges anymore? Shure missed the boat. they should have produced a cheap turntable themselves using their cartridges, business would be booming. probably hard to compete with Crosley though

Gimmee a break. A company claiming the reason they're discontinuing is they can't find quality parts? Not only is the technology antiquated but so is their business model.

John Smith No. Music is actually VERY BIG (and getting bigger) according to what I see on the street. It’s that music lovers - such as myself - have become traitors and listen to digital media. And I have to admit, I like the digital media more than ever.

David Jamison - Almost no one goes to support music concerts anymore, unless its an establiahed legacy/heritage act, 20+ years into a career, that are charging high prices for their retirement fund. In the traditional sense, yes, music is dying. The old distribution model and concert circuit standard. Now, you just post videos on KZfaq and hope for the best view count. In that sense, I guess, music is doing just fine.

John Smith People don't have the money to do so like they used to. Have you seen the price of tickets? And how they sell them now is crazy. When I was a kid. I could go to my local record store (The Music Box Newport RI) a couple of hours before they went on sale, and be 1st to 5th say in line. I could pay $30 for any ticket, and many times ended up very close since I got there early. Now it's thousands for a VIP package to sit up front. I've sat in the first 10 sections for more concerts then I can remember. Those days are over. And it's not just greed causing this. These bands have to make it all at shows because no one buys music anymore. And there are multiple reasons for that too, and not just digital music. Times are changing. The only constant in life is change. But people can't spend their extra money if they don't have any, and wages haven't gone up in over a decade, yet CEO's are taking 40 million dollar bonuses. And that is greed.

I'm talking about new/newer bands (that came out in the late '00's.) They could be the next Beatles or Metallica,, and still struggle to pull more than 20 people at the local club, at $20 a ticket. Let alone trying to mount a regional tour. It's money down the drain. They don't have a chance.
