Lyrics
He told me sweet lies of sweet love
Heavy with the burden of the truth
And he spoke of his dreams
Broken by the burden
Broken by the burden of his youth
Fourteen years he said
I couldn't look into the sun
She saw him laying at the end of my gun
Hungry for life
And thirsty for the distant river
I remember his hands
And the way the mountains looked
The light shot diamonds from his eyes
Hungry for life
And thirsty for the distant river
Like the scar of age
Written all over my face
The war is still raging inside of me
I still feel the chill
As i reveal my shame to you
I wear it like a tattoo
I wear it like a tattoo
I wear it like a tattoo

For me she is the best singer in the world hands down in my opinion n more classy than her singing is how down to earth she is n she doesn’t even raise her voice , and dresses so simple yet she’s rich n that’s absolutely attractive to me , she is a class way above the rest

How can Sade have 89 dislikes on any of her tracks? When I got out of the Marines in the early 2000’s and living in Hawaii this was one of the songs I would park at the beach in the evening and listen to. It soothed me when I was working out a lot of stuff in my head. I have nothing but respect for Sade. Her entire career she conducted herself with grace and class.

I always imagined myself on the Mediterranean coast listening to this song, from the first time I heard it back in 92-93 when I was in high school! It always took me there, somewhere I'd never been, just thru the artistry of her voice and the music. In 2013 my wife and I were traveling thru Portugal, Spain, Gibraltar and then all thru Morocco. We were on a 4-hour bus ride from Rabat to the coastal town of Oulidia, on the local bus! We were the only foreigners yet everyone was helpful and treated us kindly. As soon as I saw the African/Mediterranean coast, I slipped my headphones on and played this song, as well as a few others that transported me there before. Yeah, Sade and her/their timeless music does that to me. Forever grateful to experience this music in this way...

Accept that your existence is finite and meaningless to the universe, and that all will be lost to oblivion eventually. When you do so, you will realize the works of Sade (singer and band) are just as emotive in nonspiritual humans as those who need to feel connected to something larger than life. We have the pleasure of experiencing Sade while conditions permit. Enjoy her perfectly imperfect voice, her grace and beauty, and the band's artistry and camaraderie as much as you desire, for as long as you can.

Love how the song has such a deep meaning of the somber, melancholic story of a solider, describing something that was once so brutal (war, death), but at the same time, her song is so melodically beautiful, her vocals and the instrumentals are just ethereal and Inturn evokes the emotions of the intensity of the meaning. It practically juxtaposes perfectly with the meaning. There’s just such an amazing duality between the two that music can bring.

Absolutely beautiful! This song gives me chills. It’s one of my favorites by this glorious voice and band known as Sade. It brings tears to my eyes knowing the story of this man’s, and every man’s pain after war. My Dad was in WWII and they were all expected to come back to the US, pull up their boot straps, and get on with life. No one helped them. My father and all 5 of his brothers came home, each becoming alcoholics. It was the only way they could cope, to self medicate and try to go on. War is pure hell! Blessings to all who are here still listening to this beautiful soul and her fabulous band in 2023!

I swear this is the clearest translation of what the destructive forces of war will eventually do to the worst and best we have....She brings such crystal clarity with just the right emotional details....leave it to an icon like Sade to show the other tragedy of senseless rampage....I will never forget this performance...

Back in 1985 I was a Sade fan, this is back when she just got started and some of my boys were like what's the big deal? I was like this female can sing and she brings it with that emotion that touches a man's soul. The rest is history because I was proven right. Sade and me are the same age, she is about two months older than me but I can relate to her music and where she is going with it. Women always hunger for the romance and they carry no secret about it. Us men are more chilled with our emotions but some women have the ability to bring that romance out of a man. Sade has that ten fold.

So lovely, just damn lovely Sade. I'd always commend Vietnam Vets because that war was so messy, the avg. life expectancy of a newly trained infantry man was probably a week if not less. I've been a veteran over 3 years now & whenever I read stories & talk to Vietnam Vets I feel their sorrow, pain & respect them even more. Thanks for this song Sade!
