Nice video. Both sound good in your hands. The Fender held it's own well against a bass that sells for more then double the price. As a Sadowsky and Fender Deluxe player, there in no better preamp than the Sadowsky. For me the nod goes to Sadowsky for fit n finish, finger feel, and the mellow, clear tone.

Sadowsky with better tone blend spectrum and while it sounds a little tame, I find the Fender a little untameable. Maybe thats what others mean by "more character" but for me sits less nice in the mix and sometimes sounds less precise even though you play perfectly on point. On the other hand, I find the percussive sounds with plek and slap way better from the Fender. The extra attack puts him in place! Thanks for doing these. Great as always!

This is what a comparison video should be! In my opinion the Fender sounds really good, but the Sadowsky sounds great. I prefer the clarity of the Sadowsky, especially for the more lyrical lines you played. To me the Fender, especially the neck pickup, sounds muddy. I’d be more than happy with the Fender, but I would prefer the Sadowsky.

I think if you like Fender tones(I do) Fender wins. But I love a warmer tone as opposed to the Sadowsky which has a more sterile sound, not bad by any means just not my preference. The price deference is astronomical though.

Metroline is $1100, not much different from the Fender. They are both excellent instruments, not even considering the price point.

@@ObraBass yeah because the Febder sounds like a Febder and very traditional and what we are all used too. The Sadowsky just a modern take on the same sound.

The mids on the Fender are so much nicer. They pop out and give you the definition you expect. I prefer the bridge-pickup-only tones on the Sadowski, but I own a PJ bass and have never used the bridge pickup alone on any gig or recording.

Great comparison, Excellent playing and choice of tunes. When I play Jazz Basses I prefer the 70s location. But on the P/J I like the 60s position better. The pickup blend is less nasal to my ears. I have a 70s location P/J with EMGs and a BTC EQ.I never liked using the J pickup In the blend and even soloed. Way too quiet by itself in comparison to the p bass pickup. I just installed a EMG Musicman pickup. Moved it as far forward as possible without having to cut into the pick guard. At first I was a bit underwhelmed. I suppose I was expecting more of a musicman sound out of the pickup. That did not happen. So I angled the pickup so that the front section of the pickup was much closer to the strings than the bridge section and that is a huge improvement over the P/J combo. The two pickups are now equal volume, and by itself the MM pickups sounds like a fat J pickup with a sheen and clarity but it doesn't overpower the front part of the pickup. It is a really great sound. I still don't really like the blend of the P and the MM pickups. It's more like one or the other for me. But on either end if I mix in a tiny bit of the other pickup it's not bad.

And that's how you do a comparison ! Great playing not too flashy but very musical. Thks man ! Fender lack a little of "suaviness" (?) in melodic register, whatever the Sadowsky is more in the price range of American Ultra Precision and The Yamaha BB ( 2024 or BP34 ), 2 greats contenders

What a great comparison! I was looking for exactly this -- a comparison of a P/J with the J in the 60s position and a P/J with the J in the 70s position, without preamp coloration. This is incredibly thorough. It sounds like the Sadowsky P pickup is a little smoother with less high end. I prefer the Fender when it's just the neck pickup, but I prefer the Sadowsky for both the bridge and the two pickups together.

The Fender has more character than the Sadowsky. This second one is maybe more precise. The location of the bridge pickup get a noticeable difference. I wonder if the active pickups configured in passive mode, sounds as best as a really passive ones. Thank you for this really great comparison !

Both great. For me the Fender edges it on most of these, but you could make either work. Tho obviously the Sadowsky’s active mode takes it somewhere else completely. Biggest takeaway is how versatile these P/J’s are and how well they sit in the track, unlike my previous Jazz-type (won’t mention the manufacturer, but not cheap), which was pretty, beautifully-made, but was always a little bit of a fight to make work, character-wise. I bought the Fender Performer in the end, your video confirms I made a decent choice. Great video, thanks.

This is a really tough one... I can't decide which one I prefer. I love the rough edges of the Fender tone, awesome for rock and motown, but the Sadowsky sounds so clean and even, a lot more modern and also deeper. I'd want them both, or a different one that sits right in the middle. With the tone all the way down, I found the Sadowsky a bit too dark and the Fender still a bit too bright. But with flats or older strings, it would be just right I guess. Great playing and song choice, you really highlighted all the differences! I'm still blown away by how different two so similar instruments can sound.

I like both. I’m a Fender guy, mostly playing a 73 p-bass, but I think I prefer the Sadowsky. The Fender is nice-sits a bit deeper in the mix-while the Sadowsky has a bit more in the upper mids and so cuts through a bit more. I guess which you prefer depends on where you want to be in the mix. Both are great. Nice playing! And great variety of sounds!

Sadowsky for first and second position ,tone knob off or on, it has a sweet dark low end while this iteration of the P bass is flabby. However Fender wins for slap bass and it punches thru the rock , the flopping actually sits well in the track, funny that , but it happens frequently that the “best” bass tone isn’t the right “best” for a track
