Khaki outfits, binoculars, pith helmets and Land Rovers dashing through the mud. When you hear the words “African safari”, what do you think of?
Safaris have long been associated with a narrow, outdated image of colonial legacies and privilege. What if we could flip the old image on its head?
🇿🇲 🌍
Join me for an epic safari experience at Thorntree River Lodge in Livingstone, Zambia, where the smoke thunders and legacies of heroic African explorers reside.
🖤🤎✊🏽
Learn about this black-owned safari lodge that was started by a former guide and gives back to the local community. Let’s explore Mosi-oa-Tunya, the real name of the famous Victoria Falls. I’ll tell you more about Susi and Chuma, two African heroes who were instrumental in helping David Livingstone achieve his goals.
Through ‪@africanbushcamps‬ and their foundation, the safari experience has evolved to reflect a more authentic and community-focused perspective - including catering to a younger and more diverse audience.

I am so proud of that native run lodge. For so long the Safari industry in Zambia has been dominated by Europeans. And the other problem is that we only care about Western tourism, and ignore the tourism potential that is within the continent. Its so difficult and expensive to travel in between most African countries. The European run safaris will obviously always have an upper hand in bringing in Western tourists. That's why it is important for African governments to get their act together and implement the necessary policies to boost intra-African tourism, which will greatly benefit native entrepreneurs.

I love African Bush Camps! Their mission and attention to details at their camps is outstanding in every way. I’ve been to Somalisa in Zimbabwe three times - everything and everybody are very special. From an American woman: Africa in my heart ❤️ and soul always and forever. 💘💞🩷

Thank you for the fantastic footage of Lusaka in particular and Zambia in general. Big, big props and massive respect for doing this (crossing out, that is): ~Victoria Falls~ Mosi-oa-Tunya. I am a part of a growing movement of Zambians who want to have our name back, that is, Mosi-oa-Tunya. I salute you.

I enjoyed watching these videos. One thing: Someone may have noted this in the comments. However, I wanted to mention that "Mosi-o-Tunya" is a Lozi name, while the Tonga/Toka Leya name for the falls is "Shungwanamutitima." Thank you for acknowledging and recognizing the indigenous names instead of the colonial impositions.

I also knew it as Lozi. Lozis once controlled that area, but the native people were the Tonga/Toka Leya. Probably why people get confused. I've seen many articles and videos were they say its the Tonga name.

The Tonga or toka leya people who are the indigenous owners of land of Livingstone called the falls shungu-namutitima while the lozi who colonized that area called it mosi oa tunya

I agree with what you said about living in luxury and then touring peoples homes. Why film inside though? Even if they give you permission I think it simply shouldn't be done. 🙌🏾 I really do love your videos, they're breathtaking and insightful, and make me look forward to being able to visit these countries on my own someday❤
