I have home groomed my own personal adopted stray long hair cat as well as cats i have cat sit. Cat temperaments vary so groom in whatever place or situation calms them down. I like to groom cats while the are standing up because as long as the paws are on the ground they can't slash you. Some cats like to eat while they are groomed. Obviously, its best to start grooming a cat while a young kitten, but I have had to groom unexperienced (rescue?) cats and its best to just keep grooms short and frequent. . . eventually the cat will appreciate your efforts. My personal kitty eventually would beg for flea combing in front of his food bowl even when he wasn't hungry. Another cat I sit finally let me open his thighs and groom his inner thigh belly area. This kind of thing takes at least a year to achieve with a cat that is an adult and groomer inexperienced. Some people are just in too much of a hurry. Cat can't stand grooming any more than you can. . . so keep it short and gentle. . . or as long as kitty is comfortable.

Thank you...I have worked personally with two Scottish Folds that are my daughter's kitties....to the point of giving a lion's cut...the anatomy and disposition of a cat is something that requires skill, patience, methodical attention, and love. Your tips have helped greatly. I was using a dematting tool or cutting out mats as well (they were pretty heavy), but with a long toothed comb ...this makes practical sense. Again, thanks much!

Gorgeous girl! When she licks her lips a lot that means she IS having some pain. I use the corner of a hair clipper to buzz off the mats on my ragdoll mixes completely pain free and they have so much fur you can't see where it's been buzzed. You do a very good job but it's not pain free when it's combed out. My cats would sit well for me too and lick their lips often and a groomer told me why they lick is b/c there is pain for them. I felt bad so I switched over to spot buzzing with a clipper. Much faster too! They don't have to sit as long. I don't buzz to the skin, only the mat.

@@paragonschoolofpetgrooming it's not about practice or patience. When you have a cat that won't sit still for you to brush them at all let alone remove mats, you have a cat that ends up with mats you can't remove easily.

Nice! My cat tends to build his matts really REALLY close to the skin when they happen so it's really hard to get at them without making him irritated. He normally loves some brushy-brushy otherwise. Usually happens around the groin region which already sensitive and hard to get at.

My cat was very territorial with his fur. When I cut out mats, or brushed his fur, he would get irritable and scratch and bite if he watched. I used to always put him in a position where he wouldn't see the fur come out, and if he tried to see what's happening then I would quickly move his head away. But obviously with him squirming around, juggling all of that was always a difficult task. I would try to get someone to hold him while I dealt with the fur. That always worked great because the person would comfort him with pets and scratching, while keeping his site away from the mat cutting.

I left my long haired cat with my brother for 3 months and when I got back she is so matted. Bug chunks of rats all over her!! She is 15 BUT so ferral still that I have such a hard time doing anything for her that she needs,Like eye drops!! The vet says sometimes you just can't take the ferral out of a cat. So I just do what I can for her. Almost no one would have wanted her so I kept her. Poor little girl..she is so afraid. I just let her come to me when she wants but I cannot pick her up.

To give a cat a break especially if matting has gotten out of hand, you can also do half one day, and finish up the next day. Or if it is really bad, only do 1/4 portion of your cat over a period of 4 days, so they don't get to stressed out. Cat will be much happier than having to endure an hour of pulling and containment(meaning making it stay in one place in one position) while u try to groom the whole cat in one sitting. I groom 5-10 min every day so i never have a matting problem ever, which becomes a nice special kitty time rather than a horror for my cat. Just give your cat 5 min a day and u won't have an abundance of matting issues.

Christine Caines Hey I know this is old, but how are doing?
@pat4005
@pat4005 5 жыл бұрын
Christine Caines Same with my tuxedo rescue kitty. But over time you can gradually win the kitty over at least to some extent. I’ve also heard success stories from others so I know it’s possible. First, if at all possible, take the kitty to the vet for a wellness check-up and see if there maybe a hidden medical problem causing her to be irritable. Next, I have a spare bedroom (his “safe place” where he feels is his own space away from the other 2 kitties (they are wonderful and are non-aggressive towards him but he is still fearful so there must have been some bad experience in his past). 3rd. In that room I have a mother cat pheromone wall outlet plug-in which works but may take up to a couple weeks. It took about a week for it to really show it was working but it was worth it. I have seen him many times lay near it so he does find it calming. He actually let me start petting him! And then a week later gave me kitty head-bumps and flopped next to me when I was on the bed! 4th. Play time together! This is the greatest bonding thing between you and your kitty! I see how they all love the fishy or birdie thing on the end of the long string attached to a pole. (Especially if it has feathers). Be sure to start slowly moving it around, say near them and drag it then stop, then move it suddenly to get their attention. Then start to swirl it slowly higher, then a quick movement like a figure 8 works well both on the floor and higher. Be sure to watch their eyes to see if they are following it and let them pounce on it and catch it! Let the kitty WIN! It builds self-esteem and you can have fun together and build trust. Don’t over-do it 15 mins is usually more than enough and be sure to have fresh water nearby for you kitty to drink after “hunting”. Along with an occasional treat!

I'm freaking out.. but she's not going for any of this.

I noticed if you brush long-haired they get mats even more often. I think it's because hair is very thin and it's easy to get mats. If mats does not come out, cut them. Be very careful not to cut skin! Better to live a bit of a mat than to make the cat bleed. When the mat is cut in half, it can be easier to brush it off. Do it slowly and make sure you hold the mat in your hand like shown in the video, so it's less irritating. xx Natalie
