Ever heard of tempered glass? There are certain areas around your home- near doors, showers, stairs, and more- where a fall is more likely to occur. Specifically- someone falling into a pane of glass. This is where tempered glass comes into play. It's a special type of glass designed to break into very small pieces upon impact to reduce the likelihood of injury. Tempered glass is the most commonly used material for safety glazing, which is essentially making sure that all the hazardous glass areas in your home are built safely. Fun fact: tempered glass is not the only material you can use to safety glaze, but it is by far by the most widely used. This video will cover the 2021 IRC codes for safety glazing in doors. There is a lot more information about safety glazing, and if you'd like to learn more about this and other building codes, check out my On-Demand course called IRC 3 Chapter 3: The Human Element, at BuildingCodeCollege.com.
