Thanks for this! Question re "joist BACK span" which is confusing me At 1:05, in the "maximum cantilever" portion of Table R507.6, it refers to "joist back span" in feet, in 2' increments, from 4' up to the number that is just below the max. "allowable joist span." What is a a "joist BACK span?" It's not defined. Is that the actual ledger-to-beam distance for your joists? If so, isn't that what "joist span" already means?

I've replaced a lot of notched beams and none that have been side bolted with 1/2 carriage bolts. Actually I've never seen a bolted beam fail on any deck in over 30 years of doing this.

I think you're reading this wrong. The 'depth' of the porch is from the building face to the center of the 'header' which is the beam opposite/parallel to the building (as stated in note 'c'. They're giving you 2 examples either 8 feet deep, or 14 feet deep. Example, if your porch is 14 feet deep (building to header), that header, with 2-2x12, can span 10' 10". wide (side to side). Nowhere does it mention a ridge beam. It is talking about the header/girder that is supporting the ridge beam.

What beams to use when the beam span is 26 foot? (building a 26 x 26 foot free standing deck, but post are only located on the edges of the deck = imagine a grid of 9 post but center post missing, as underneath deck will be used as a "garage") What adjustment could I make for this to work? inserting any extra post in the center of the garage will not work

I watched for exactly that reason. I think what he is trying to say is that a deck is not supposed to rely on the brick for any type of support. Put some additional posts a few feet from the wall, opposite the posts at the end of the deck, and essentially what you have is a free standing deck, with only a bit of it cantilevering against your brick. And just put as strong a lag bolt system attaching through the vener to the interior framing for laughs.... but its not supposed to rely on it. ;)

What about a scenario of dwelling unit within a shop like a barndominium. There’s a 20x14 area within a 40x60 shop. Does that separation need to be with 1/2” gypsum board or equivalent surrounding that dwelling unit?

Why not just make a chart for each of the span types along with a picture. That would be 2 easy. Gotta use foot notes, bulletins and addendum. Most builders aren't engineers. Keep it simple stupid

hi glenn, this was super informative. I'm undergoing a basement renovation and following the 2018 VA residential building code. One question I do not understand is whether fire blocking is needed in the ceiling joists of a basement? What if HVAC ducting or electrical runs down the length of a ceiling joist bay? I haven't been able to find clarity around those questions and the county inspector isn't providing direction.

Maybe people who write codes should less about being a Karen and have more practical knowledge? Codes are written by worthless scum who want nothing more than to be relevant to someone, somewhere, so they feel a little important, even though nobody actually cares if they live or not.

your videos are great. i’m building a 14x20’ deck that cantilevers; my beam needs to be 20’ but i’m confused on the tables, should i just use 4 beams made up of double 2x10 that are all 5’ long to equal the 20’ span? and insight would be appreciated

Thanks Glenn, great explanation of the 2021 and the proposed 2024. Makes sense. Question though, using the allowable beam span can the beam also have a cantilever on the beam beyond the post, like 1/4 the beam length?

Yes, a beam sized under the IRC table can cantilever one fourth the adjacent beam span.

Such a helpful video! One Question- I need to calculate the "joist span factor" on a 9' wide freestanding deck with only 2 beams, and joists cantilevering 18" beyond beams at both ends. To determine the "actual joist cantilever", do you add both cantilevers together (making it 36") or use 18"?

I was first taught how to properly build a stairs in about 1972, and have been working with houses since, so I've had some time to think about stairways. Maybe the most important thing to grasp is that there is no such thing as a safe stairs. Anyone of any age or ability can trip or fall on a stairs built exactly to today's or yesterday's code requirements. When they do, they need two things a well attached grippable hand railing (or two) and nothing too dangerous to fall into. The purpose of the code is to make them as safe as we reasonably can. The changes that I've seen over the last 50 some years mostly have to do with the interpretation of what is "reasonable".

I have seen 2ft of snow plus on this roof and it is a straight as the day it was built, you folks that push the education building code seriously think of the waste and of coarse you will brag how it with stood a 9 earthquake or a 250 mile per hr hurricane but sensible people don t build in areas and then infect us with there stupid code of building serious a DECK a you parking a d9 bulldozer for a conversation piece
