Historians like Irfan Habib and Romila Thapar denied the existence of Ram Temple at Ayodhya ignoring the very long and continuous protest and contest of people to claim of the existence of the temple. Also, the textbooks have always ignored the Maratha Empire which was very successful during the 18th century and I believe they or their work were very influential in drafting the NCERT history textbooks which are then referred by other state boards. So don't know if there is any actual need to rewrite history.

Prof.Kumar is right that right from the beginning it was government which set up committees to write history textbooks. Since beginning school textbooks in India has been dominated by a specific group of people. Now when other group tries to question that and rewrite these, people become restless. We want correct history of India . The reign of Mughal Empire is described in detail , whereas the freedom struggle of Indians were in very short form . Thousands of revolutioneries who were killed by British were omitted from history ! Again , Bhagat Singh was called a terrorist , the name of Surya Sen (. Masterda ) who fought against British in 1930 was deleted from NCERT books . He and his companions took possession of the Chittagong british armoury and made Chittagong free for months .
