Career Conversations Q&A with Joshua Jackson (The Affair, Dawson’s Creek), current star of Children of a Lesser God, moderated by BroadwayWorld's Richard Ridge of "Backstage with Richard Ridge!"
Joshua Jackson makes his Broadway debut in Children of a Lesser God alongside Lauren Ridloff, telling the story of an unconventional teacher at a school for the deaf and remarkable woman he meets there. It received rave reviews (The New York Times called Jackson a revelation in his role) during last summer’s workshop in The Berkshires. Jackson’s additional stage credits include a successful run on London’s West End starring in A Life in the Theatre alongside Patrick Stewart. The acclaimed comedy was written by the Pulitzer Prize and Olivier Award winning, and Oscar nominated David Mamet. He also starred in the off-Broadway play Smart People at New York’s Second Stage Theatre, about four Harvard intellectuals finding themselves entangled in a complex web of social politics.
Jackson currently stars alongside Dominic West, Ruth Wilson, and Maura Tierney in the Golden Globe award-winning television series The Affair on Showtime, which will return for its fourth season this June. Jackson was recently seen in the National Geographic Channel’s Emmy award winning documentary series Years of Living Dangerously. He previously starred on FOX’s hit show Fringe created by J.J. Abrams and made a cameo appearance in the Netflix Original Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt.
Well known as Dawson’s Creek’s fast-talking, self-deprecating Pacey Witter, Jackson has been working in front of the camera for over twenty years. His feature film debut was in Michael Bortman’s Crooked Hearts, which he followed up with The Mighty Ducks trilogy, Digger, and Andre the Seal. Jackson starred in Universal Pictures’ The Skulls, Rose Troche’s acclaimed drama The Safety of Objects, the HBO Films version of Moises Kaufman’s groundbreaking play The Laramie Project, and in Regent Films’ Aurora Borealis, opposite Donald Sutherland.
Jackson’s additional feature film credits include Sky, Cursed, Gossip, Bryan Singer’s Apt Pupil, and Cruel Intentions. He also starred opposite Rebecca Hall, Bruce Willis, and Catherine Zeta Jones in Lay the Favorite for director Stephen Frears and Inescapable opposite Marisa Tomei. He was seen as part of the ensemble cast of the critically acclaimed film Bobby for director Emilio Estevez and starred in the psychological thriller Shutter for 20th Century Fox/New Regency which was shot on location in Tokyo. Additionally, he had noted cameos in Steven Soderbergh’s Ocean’s 11, Scream 2, Urban Legend, and I Love Your Work. In 2010, he received the Best Actor Genie Award for his starring role in the Canadian Independent feature film One Week.
A Vancouver native, Jackson divides his time between his hometown and Los Angeles.

I feel like Joshua Jackson is one of the most overlooked stars of a generation. I've quite literally grown up with him on my TV, yet he's rarely mentioned. He was Charlie, then Pacey, then Peter, then Cole. Since 1992, he's been a constant, and that's because he's really good at what he does. I always believe him in a role, but people don't talk about his skills either. On top of that, he seems like a total delight. I don't understand why he's not considered iconic.

He's an amazing actor. I kind of missed Dawson's Creek at the time but as an adult I'm actually watching the boxset on our national station's website, and I'm largely watching it to see him act. The great thing about watching the boxset is that I have gotten to see those kids grow up and develop as actors. For me, he had it right from the start. He's just super. I'm starting to come to his other roles now (just watched One Week) and he deserves brilliant roles.

Richard is very good at interviewing people. Back to Josh, when he talked about trying to create a positive environment on set, I can assure you he speaks the thruth. I had the privilege of being on the Shadows in the sun set in Tuscany, and I remember him treating all people kindly, like that time he helped a crew girl who had to carry a heavy box around. Of all people on set, he (the lead actor) was the one to get up from his chair and go help her. And Now that I know that set was an hard experience for him because of Keitel, those little nice gestures are even more remarkable. Truly AMAZING actor and guy.

The main reason why I watch all the shows with him in original is his amazing voice, his intonations. I'm from Russia, English is not my native language, sometimes I don't understand everything he says. But it sounds so beautiful and fascinating that here I am, translating his speech using a dictionary.

Joshua Jackson is a wonderful person, and he just gets better and better with his craft. To have the privilege to watch him grow as an actor and to see his talent evolve from the time I saw The Mighty Ducks at the age of 10 all the way through to what he's doing now has been a joy. I wish he would work more and be in more things because he's so talented. To see certain other actors get huge roles and acclaim, who frankly aren't as good at their job as Josh (nor as gracious or kind a person as he), is a bummer when this gem of a human being is right here and willing to work his ass off.

I don´t see anything in him that reminds of Mel Gibson. I never saw Mel Gibson attractive in any way. And Josh may not be the best looking and hottest male actor, but he has that charisma, that voice and that talent. Like that he isn´t just a pretty face. Hollywood is full of them. You can actually believe that he is the character that he plays And it also helps that he looks more like normal guy. When Tom Cruise gets the girl, no-one is surprised. Because he is Tom Cruise. Most guys aren´t Brad Pitt and most girls aren´t Angelina Jolie. Much easier to believe in actors who just seem like normal people and are good at their work.

@@destinychild4659 So true! I find him wayyy more atractive then Brad Pitt and many of the so called «hot» guys of Hollywood. He’s got this charisma and energy that draws you to him. And that smile! And that voice! And that twinkle in his beautiful eyes! Pluss he’s tall. Imo;) And that he seems like a really good human being♥️
