He didn’t understand sign language, she hadn’t used her voice in 26 years, but they still found ways to trust and communicate. Joshua Jackson and Lauren Ridloff share the story of their first rehearsal for "Children of a Lesser God," and how they were able to find a connection and understanding through their vulnerability and desire to be heard. Joshua Jackson makes his Broadway debut in "Children of a Lesser God" after earning rave reviews -- "The New York Times" hailed Jackson "a revelation" -- at last summer’s workshop in The Berkshires. He currently stars in Showtime’s "The Affair" and was recently seen in the National Geographic Channel’s "Years of Living Dangerously." He previously starred on "Fringe" and "Dawson’s Creek."
Lauren Ridloff received a Best Actress nomination by the Berkshire Theater Critic Awards for her portrayal of Sarah Norman in the Tony Award-winning "Children of a Lesser God." She will reprise her role with her Broadway debut at Studio 54. She appears in the Palme D’Or nominated film "Wonderstruck," directed by Todd Haynes and starring Julianne Moore and Michelle Williams. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at www.ted.com/tedx

I’m also fluent! This story, when I saw it on film in my high school ASL class, I knew I wanted to become an interpreter. I am now certified! 🤟🏽

I'm fluent in ASL. I watched it on opening preview night, and I cried when she used her voice. It's a really great play. Mark Medoff who wrote Children of a Lesser God is a professor at my university. So it was an honor to see the reboot on Broadway a couple weeks ago. Definitely recommend it.

@@allysonmessina1785 Happy Holidays! She probably did a lot of research, especially to see if they would work well together and they did 😀. Though I suppose for actors, getting to know each other by researching them and meeting them and rehearsing would make more sense than watching the person on tv. Just my thoughts. Stay safe and well 😀

Yes everyone will always remember him as “Pacey” despite his many amazing roles. Joshua knows this, everytime someone mentions it he just laughs it off and is a good sport about it. All good 😂

@@FacebookQueen I get what you’re saying. Josh has MANY other talents, and “being Pacey” is just one small part of his identity. BUT, Josh’s performance on Dawson’s Creek was PHENOMENAL. The way he delivered his lines (voice, tone, timing, etc), looked at “Joey”, and “Pacey” was a very relatable character for the teen audience (such as myself) at the time the show aired. I think all of those factors together have created this classic identity for Josh that passionate fans of the TV show will always carry. ♥️

I started noticing Josh when he was cast in Fringe. Missed out in Dawson's Creek, feeling it was a too much of a teen drama. But seeing this man perform in Fringe, I noticed for the first time this man had range, and all thanks to the rest of cast. They really helped him elevate his art in acting. It's great to see him expand into Broadway. Keep up the amazing work Josh.

Dawson's Creek is not objectively a "good" show and it's definitely a teen drama but he was also very good in that. He's also done an amazing job in the TV series "The Affair".

If you haven't watched "The Affair" yet on Showtime, you'll see Jackson's full range. He's also been in "When They See Us" (Netflix) and more recently "Little Fires Everywhere" (Hulu).

It blows my mind they didn’t just make the choice to have an interpreter say Ridloff’s lines or have a caption/title technology show the words she’s saying and you follow through that or you don’t. If HOH, Deaf and deaf people have to make so much effort trying to hear our words, it’s really not that much to ask a hearing audience to have to make an effort to hear her. Plus them not making this accessible? The only person who can see the interpreter at the Talk is Ridloff, and this Talk’s CC’s are auto-captioned. This is just a disconnect.
