Thank you very much. My grinder clutch was making crazy noise thought the machine was broken. This video was excellent kept me from doing something stupid and now the machine is working perfectly. I was surprised by the amount of caked up grounds that were stuck down inside.

Thank you very much. I’ve been hearing that noise for a week for a few seconds when grinding, but we could make our coffee anyway. Now we can hear a “spinning” sound when beans inside but burs don’t move. When I take beans and upper bur off, I can hear the first sound showed on your video again, and the lower bur spins again. It look like

Thanks so much for this, really helpful as I hastily took it apart and then couldn't fit how to put it back together again! Turns out my washer was completely worn and have a new one winging it's way to me from Sage spare parts

I hoover my sage grinder like you do at the onset every day to keep in tip top condition. It’s good to know what to do if something goes really wrong though 🙌

Thank you so much! After hearing the awful sound, I thought my grinder was bol****esd. Tip #1 was a lifesaver! Vacuum, coarser grind setting and voilá! The grinder is up and running. As you mentioned, unfortunately I couldn’t see what was actually causing the problem. Thanks again for this very helpful video. Cheers!

I set my internal burr to 1, as no other settings where getting the fine ground i was after. But what i really should have done was to disassemble the lower and impeller and give it a good clean. After that it would grind perfect on an internal burr setting of 4.

Great video. Was just about to disassemble the lower burr when I changed the beans. Somebody gifted me intelligentsia beans that were too lightly roasted and gummed up the machine. My typical supermarket dark roast beans went through just fine. Phew!

The SGP is in desperate need of an update. Massive retention and lots of sludgy fines makes buying expensive single-origins pointless. My £60 Timemore C3 wipes the floor with my SGP at pour-over/aero, it was very surprising!

Also when working on the machine unplug from power. Don’t want your sausages turn in to mince meat. 😂 Doesn’t take much to accidentally push the button or porter switch.

Hey! I’m after your advise @coffee_kev. I’m been looking for a machine and grinder for about 6 months, watching your channel for advise but I’m still not sure what the best combo is. I like a dark strong coffee and getting feed up with paying £3.50 to £5 for a below par drink from coffee shops. I have a budget of about £1200, machine/grinder combo would you recommend around that budget?

Our grinder has slowly got longer and longer to grind, and is SO bloody loud. I thought it was the burrs wearing out? It also clogged a lot (and barely comes out with current beans), so I have to tip it forwards to see it pour out. Also the adjustment is jammed tight since I pulled the burrs out to clean… help! It’s the newer model so it doesn’t have a replacement impeller!

Lower burr is stuck and will not come off. Yes I removed the bolt and washers. It just seemed jammed. Any help ?

What happens if you vacuumed the felt washer by mistake but is a little bit stretched out? Also, what is the function of the felt washer? Is it essential to have in the grinder?

I have this problem on my Breville Barista Express grinder. The grinder just keeps on spinning but there is no grind coffee falling. The beans only stocks at the top of the upper burr. Before this happened, the user told me that they heard an unusual noise from the grinder, then the issue occurs. My plan is to replace the upper burr. I cant sell coffee because of this problem.

Hey man! I’m new to your page. Our grinder was working so well and then all of a sudden it would stall out and not even spin. After I hoovered it it started to spin but still makes that sound. I’m at a stand still now where it still make that chain saw sound. Is it smart to just buy dark roast beans and throw it in there hoping it starts grinding again? Or is my breville bollocked?

Hi :-). Hmm, so you've done the full thing, taken the inner burr out too and hoovered everything out and it's still happening? The inner burr isn't set to a low number is it by any chance? If so, try putting it back up to 5 or 6. If not, yeah it could be bolloxed, if it's in warranty I'd get in touch with them, it could be stripped gears - the slipper clutch works most of the time but not all the time. Ta, Kev.

I bought a SGP that was bol****ed. Turned out the plastic gear wheel was stripped. I couldn't find a replacement at the time so had someone 3D print one for me. It now grinds fine but is much louder than my other SGP (yes, i have 2!) I took the gear wheel from my quieter grinder and popped it into the 'screamer' but still no joy. The issue is elsewhere within the machine. Any other reason you could think of as to why one grinder is much much louder than the other?

I had a strange issue that my breville grinder suddenly started grinding very fine, whilst making multiple coffees it happend, very strange. I cleaned it completely, but it didn't help. I saw this is a common issue but I didn't find the reason for it. I had to dial it in again and had to change the grind setting from 3 to 9! Have you ever encountered such an issue?

You mean it just started grinding finer without being adjusted? I've never come across that. How long had you had the grinder before this happened, out of interest? In theory you should really only have had to drop to 3 internally after quite a lot of wear to the burrs. If you take the top burr out, and move it around in the light (it's hard to spot) do you see a line/scratch all the way around towards the bottom of the burr?

yea, it just suddenly changed, after the second grind I noticed the basket is half full and it looked finer. if there is minor change over time it's to be expected, but not like that. when I cleaned the grinder I looked scratches and it look fine, at least to my eyes, I have it for about 15 months.

Hi Kev very useful (and brilliantly funny) guide. A problem I've noticed after doing the full clean (including the lower burs) and putting everything back together perfectly, is that the I'm finding my grind is always coarse. I'm at 1 for the outer bur setting and I've gone down to 5 for the internal setting ( it was 6 before). Prior to the deep clean my dialled in setting was outer bur 6. Is there anything else I can do? Should I tighten the lower bur more?

Try adjusting the internal upper burrs to 1-3. It should grind finer.

The gear don’t have strength enaugh to press the beans… Actually it doesn’t work with lower and upper burs even without beans… I think I’m in a mess… We don’t have any support center in Barcelona or Spain…
