Looks good! I replanted my front garden. It is finished and after I weed eat, I can move to preparing the main garden for fall crops. The squash bugs are absolutely horrible and DE does NOT kill them. Neither did neem. I find that having them on trellises makes it very hard to flick the bugs into soapy water. So, live and learn.

Those gourds are looking amazing! We grew them once when I was a kid but we didn’t end up making birdhouses from then. But we kids enjoyed marveling at all the shapes of the gourds.

(I'm apologizing now for a long post...) About the rogue asparagus fronds: We put some stakes in the corners and about halfway down the bed of our asparagus this year (as fronds were spilling into the pathways) and strung plain cotton twine between the stakes/poles to help corral the fronds. Because we don't have a thickly-planted row, we wanted to encourage the berries we see to drop inside the bed to make new crowns. But it also made it easier to navigate between garden beds without potentially damaging our very fluffy asparagus. 😉 About the onions: We started our onions from sets, as well in spring (last year). At the end of autumn, we expected to get a harvest, but our onions did not bulb at all - they looked more like shallots! Just before our arctic blast in early spring (this year), we dug up our onions and replanted only the strongest-looking ones, but when we replanted, we didn't fully cover the area that should have bulbed. (A few of the tops sent up flowers, which we clipped.) We have since harvested fully-bulbed (sometimes divided bulb) onions from those we replanted once the leaves fell over at the neck. I think we might have planted the sets too deeply, even though we followed the planting instructions. The next onions we plant, we are going to do an experiment planting one side of the row exactly according to the directions, and the other side of the row will be half that depth so we can see if we get bulbs the first year. Sometimes the plants just have a mind of their own and don't do what we expect them to, though. 🤭 I was excited to see how well all your crops have been doing! Thanks so much for doing these garden tours - I'm learning of so many more varieties I want to try. I have never grown pink-eyed purple hulls, but have grown purple-hulled cowpeas - and I do remember the pods turning deep purple as they ripened. It started with a deep purple line at the seam that blushed across the remainder of the pod and was a beautiful sight, in my opinion. I am interested to see what yours do! Those limas remind me of what my Great Aunt used to call Christmas Limas. Stunning deep purple to lavender (and some maroon, sometimes) with pale green or cream - and absolutely delicious! She'd just cook them up with fresh butter, a pinch of salt, and a few dashes of cracked black pepper.

I love Patty pan squash! I saw two baby pattypan squash has that should be opening them shortly but unfortunately I haven't seen a lot of borer beetles. Even though I'm not too concerned about the Trimble she knows with them I have been out there several times a day picking out their eggs from the limbs in the vines. I'm now having to look at the flower and underneath the leaves now cuz there's this one Beetle that was laying her eggs all kinds of places LOL

Awesome garden tour this week Heather, thank you for sharing! I hope your squash also makes it to storage maturity, fingers crossed! I don't have personal experience but sometimes people add a grapeleaf to the jar to help. I have also seen some recipes call for a pickling lime brine process, which can also supposedly help keep them crisp. I love love pickles, but not mushy ones so I understand the desire to have them crispy/crunchy!

I live in the NM high desert and I garden. I also have bird houses and a bird bath and a feeder. The parents take the juveniles into the garden, it helps with the bugs, but if I start plants out too late it is hard on them. I haven’t been able to grow beets at all and radishes only made it to head out in the late summer, bird salad!

Thanks for the sunflower seed tips! I know my sunflower seeds are ready when I find a flock of finches in the patch and discover empty sunflower heads... 😂

Try fermenting your cucumbers that get away from you. Put either grape, blackberry or horseradish leaves in the jar. I’ve only done it once but OMG! The best pickles I’ve ever made!!

Goodness gracious things have grown SO much since last week!! I don't think my onions are doing much at all. Part of the problem is the dirt company brought me the wrong dirt so I had 4 tons of dirt to use that had all kinds of crap in it! We even found a huge metal hook in it! They were supposed to bring the sifted but nope.😡 Obviously we couldn't just leave a big pile of dirt so half my garden doesn't have the best. We only ended up getting one ton of sifted with the price difference they refunded us. I got our first two broccoli for dinner today!!

FYI When we make dill pickles, we add some grape leaves & a bay leaf or 2. The tannins from those keep them crisp. Also cutting off the blossom end of the cucumber. But we eat them all too fast. My favorite is fermented dill pickles.

Hi there Heather, from BC. OMGoodness when you showed you were growing the sweet 100 cherry tomatoes I was sooo dang excited. That is what I planted in my community garden plot!!! They aren't a big as yours, however I have some little tiny green fruit on them. Yay to me for my first time gardening!! I do have a question again.... I did plant 8 of my favorite herbs, ( Parsley, sage rosemary, thyme, Oregano, basil, & marjoram & dill), but the zucchini plant had grown over & completely covered my sage, and thyme. So I did my best at transplanting them up by my pepper plants. Was that a good thing to do?? You asked for questions, and that's mine. Always love watching your channel!! Have a grand day!

For your pickles soak the cucumbers in pickling lime for 24 hrs.. then rise well, n process how ever you want them, sweet, dill, ect.. I do my hot pepper rings the dame way.. good luck

Everything looks so lovely! I wanted to grow bird house gourds this year, time just got away from me. Now that you've said that about the kajari i ran to check mine out, its got the stripes but dull and fuzzy like the armpit melon lol. Either way I'm excited to try it!❤🍈

All my squash continue to get the powder mildew and I read that you need to remove those leaves as soon as you see it on the leaves and dont touch the good leaves with your hands if you touched the mildew leaves or let the mildew leaves touch the goods one and go straight to the burn pile or trash and not to use it as compost….That being said I do that and it just continues to make more mildew and I am down to almost nothing. This is my first year I am having many struggles on my different plants including the serious bird invasion in the begging they took all my seeds it took to plant three times to get a plant going then they stopped all at once now they back ruining all my tomatoes by pecking holes in them so I am having to throw away tons of tomatoes, or the sun splitting them…a pitiful season!!! This definitely tells me I won’t plant next season living here I’ll just wait til I move to my farm and try again. Also thanks for the info on the sugar baby melons because I have a few thats been sitting on the vines because I had no indication on when to pick it because im looking for brown on the stem and thats not happening so im glad you discussed that topic. I absolutely love your channel, and its helped me so much with my ventures in gardening. I do have a question that maybe you could help with? I just started gardening (somewhat successfully) this year, also in zone 7b, but I’ve kind of been winging it. I planted some garlic in a bed around March (I now know that was not the right time, whoops!) and while it’s still growing well, everything around it in the same bed has died or not grown at all. I don’t think the garlic is ready to harvest and eat or use, but I’m wondering if I need to just scrap what I have, plant the garlic somewhere else, and try again with the bed? Have you ever experienced this or have any thoughts? Also, keeping seeds… what’s the secret? I have a few things I let go to seed (spinach, basil, etc) but I have no idea what to do now. 😂
