This topic adresses the main differences between a one-plane swing and a two-plane swing and why having pieces from BOTH swings in your game can be harmful. It is best to be either one-plane or two-plane, but never in-between.

I am Tom Saguto, PGA Member and founder of SagutoGolf. Thank you for visiting my instructional page where you can find how to get on the fast track to improving your golfing abilities. Whether you are a seasoned golfing veteran looking for a quick swing tune-up after an on-course emergency, or a beginner just looking to get the most out of your golfing experience, I am here to help you achieve your golfing goals.
My mission as your swing doctor is simple, to help you maximize your enjoyment in game of golf. Because, let’s face it, golf is a hard game.
My philosophy is wholly based on the student having a fun, meaningful experience in a frustrating and complicated game where potential lifelong golfers either quit because it is too difficult or that they experience some form of swing-related pain or discomfort. I mitigate these problems by focusing entirely on the student’s needs and goals while teaching a golf swing method that ultimately takes stress off of the common pain areas of the swing.

This video was super helpful for me. I have been golfing for a couple of years but have taken it really seriously this year and have become obsessed with improving my swing. I have gone to the range a lot, watched a ton of youtube videos and reels and it has resulted in me slowly improving but ultimately being confused with my inconsistency a lot of the time. One day at the range I tried taking my backswing on a more horizontal plane instead of lifting then dropping like a two plane swing. I was suddenly crushing the ball with my irons and felt compression of the ball like never before. I didnt realize until now I stumbled on the single plane swing by accident and it makes sense why it feels so much simpler to me now to compress the ball. Some of the tips you shared in this video I was 100% doing, mainly because most golf influencers use the two plane swing, so I had my hands to close to my body and would get stuck and have to extend.

I am 68, bad right knee (need a replacement), horrible lower back pain and have been playing for 40 years. I watched Toms introduction to the Stack and Tilt swing and proceeded to watch another five of his videos. After two days I finally went to the range. The first ten balls were bad because it was a new experience. I started to use the S&T method and could not believe the results. Within the first 20 ball I was hitting an 8 as far as my 7. Every club in my bag responded to this new swing. 95% of my shots after the first 15 balls were straight, clean and effortless. My driver is slightly longer in flight, but the spin on the ball makes it fly past my old distance. What is amazing is zero knee or back pain after about 100 balls. I cannot thank you enough, Tom. You just made the next twenty years more enjoyable.

I like how you show the right stuff...I'm 64 now my boys watched dad play golf in my younger days. I had a 3 handicap...my oldest doesn't play anymore but my youngest has taken the game up and is pretty good. He's overseas right now with the military. I see what he's doing, but he won't listen to me...it's called stubbornness. I can drop his score down but I guess he doesn't want to listen to me, cause I am just old. He's gone out and spent over 1000.00 for clubs, but he can't break 95...he hits it a mile and has killed many monkeys...I am sending him your channel and maybe he will listen to you...love your philosophy!!

Okay, stumbled across your videos as a result of COVID19 isolation. I'm really glad I found you! You're very good at explaining techniques. Before seeing this video I never knew about one-plane vs two-plane swing; fascinating stuff! I realized I'm one of those guys stuck in the 1 1/2 plane swing! As a result, I've been very inconsistent. I gravitate toward the one plane naturally but I couldn't because the lie angle of my clubs would be off. Now I know why! Thanks very much!!

This is gold! Gold Jerry! Even though as a former one planer myself I vehemently disagree with Tom's conclusion that one plane is essentially better and more body friendly this should be mandatory viewing for any aspiring golfer. And in a perfect world it would be referenced in every single discussion of the swing. It would clear up 99.99% of golfy golf confusion. In fact if I were younger I would sincerely quit my day job and create a channel unlike any others I've seen that presents both planes in every single tutorial. In my experience this complete lack of awareness to the two methods is why there continues to be even more confusion about this game as in idk say 1985. But it's all good, it's fun to keep clicking and support a good cause...Speaking of which would love to see Tom in two plane mode. Full bucket, no commentary needed, but certainly welcome ;)

Awesome!! I'm very glad to know that this video helped you figure it out. Nice job!! I had phased out private lessons (both in-person and virtual) awhile back so I could dedicate more time to my online school. I've not yet set a date for when I will resume them, but when I do - which I hope will be soon - the virtual lessons and swing video analysis service will be reserved exclusively for my online school members. In-person lessons at my Pawleys Island location will be open to members and non-members. If you are in my online school please send me a message through the "chat" feature and I will add you to my list to be notified when slots open up. If you are not in the school yet, that would be a great starting point as it is designed to get golfers on the fast track towards properly learning this swing system in a comprehensive, structured, sequential platform. The school is where you will find very detailed lessons and drills that take you through the entire swing step-by-step, position-by-position from setup to finish, along with diagnostic and corrective tools for resolving common swing, contact, and ball flight issues, and much more. Thousands of men and women from across the globe - including many seasoned, low-handicap, competitive players and spanning all age ranges from junior to super-senior - are now enjoying the best golf of their lives as a result, and I'm happy to let their unsolicited testimonials tell the story: saguto.golf/p/sagutogolfreviews. At just $14.99/month or $149.99 per year the value in terms of what you get for that price point is beyond comprehension, and based on proven results it represents by far the best golf instruction deal on the planet. Just found this and it's gold. I had a few lessons where instructors told me to lower my hands below my shoulder but they never explained why and it got forgotten but now that you have explained what it means I understand and know how important it is. I appreciate your kind words, Ryan, and I'm very glad to know that my instruction content and style are resonating with you! You are absolutely correct in that my channel's lessons and tips are not a compilation of band-aid fixes - they are all elements of the comprehensive swing system that I teach. Now, could someone deploy one of my tips to field dress a swing wound? Absolutely. However, it will ultimately serve them far better - and will stand the test of time and pressure - if they adopt and embrace the system in its entirety, and that is precisely what the online school does in a structured and sequential learning environment. Thousands of folks across the globe are now playing the best golf of their lives as a result, and I'm happy to let their unsolicited testimonials tell the story: saguto.golf/p/sagutogolfreviews. You described me perfectly. I was keeping my hands too low and trying to swing on one plane. Now that I set up with my hands a bit higher, I can see in my mind's eye the plane I need to start on. I simply try to stay on that plane on the way back. I also notice how well you keep your chin up and swing under a steady head. If I keep my chin too low, my left shoulder hits it and causes me to sway off the ball. The two-plane swing takes way too much practice and coordination. Sure, it works once in a while, but having to shallow out the club on the way down is very difficult to do correctly. It's easy to get too shallow or not shallow enough, leading to a lot of inconsistency. From now on I'm a single-plane golfer!

I really wish people would understand how important lowering your lead shoulder is. I am 70 and after years of never having a confident swing, I now have a swing that’s repeatable and very long. If I do this the club finds its way to the proper slot. If I do a fake turn , I’m guaranteed to hit a big fat slice. The only swing thought is turn shoulder down to the ball. That’s it. This new found confident swing has me hitting from the tips. Thanks Tom. This is a real class and a real education.

great info. I experienced much the same. went to a guy a few years ago who turned me into a one planer. took me a couple of years to lower my backswing. I turned into a good long iron player with a one plane. One swing with driver to sandwedge. I like how you cleared up the straightening of the right leg. I was struggling a tad when my teach came over and said your left knee is moving wrong. He wanted me to make sure i bent it away from me, and not move it towards my right foot on the backswing. That move makes you straighten your right leg on the take back. Great tweak. You can't miss the ball playing this way

I appreciate that, David, and I'm very glad to know that my instruction is resonating with you! And indeed, this body-friendly, powerful, consistent, low-maintenance swing system is "the bomb" since it is rooted in physics, geometry, and human physiology, and is modeled on empirical observations of the game's most prolific ball strikers. As such it does not discriminate by age or ability - from kids to seniors and everyone in between, inclusive of the best players in the world. Watch any Tour event on TV and you'll see a significant number of players executing these motions, a fact corroborated by just how many of them have a very centered swing with the lead knee flexing and the trail leg straightening during the backswing, their lead arms on or very close to their tilted shoulder planes, and their hands deep behind their trail shoulder at the top. The transformation from a two-plane "shift & lift" motion certainly takes time as we work to gradually eradicate those stubborn ghosts of swings past. It's a very worthwhile process, though, as it ultimately leads us to the land of consistent ball striking bliss. By the way, would you like to learn some key aspects of the swing I teach in a more structured manner? If so, then here is a link to my FREE mini course “The Top 3 Things You Need to Be a Great Ball Striker”: go.saguto.golf/ It's a great way to gain a fundamental understanding of this system as well as an introduction to the instruction style that has thousands of men and women from across the globe - including many seasoned, low-handicap, competitive players and spanning all age ranges from junior to super-senior - enjoying the best golf of their lives: saguto.golf/p/sagutogolfreviews Thanks again! So many misconstrued and/or misguided teachings - such as taking the club straight back, turning the shoulders level while independently lifting the arms, shifting into and torquing against a firm trail side, actively rolling the hands through impact, etc. - have relegated generations of golfers to the vast abyss of inconsistency and chronic frustration (and chronic back/knee/hip pain as well). Great explanation of the single plane swing. I’m working on transitioning to it along with dead hand chipping to get as many variables out of my game as possible. May I also suggest that at about 4:00 minutes into the Nicklaus v. Snead 1963 Shell’s WWOG a great comparison is shown of their swings. Nicklaus, high takeaway, standing close to the ball two piece and Snead, what is called a classic one piece. Finally, I have found that a little weaker grip is helpful.

I’ve been watching your videos for most of this year. And I have to say this one helped me probably the most. This just fixed my swing first try. I was hitting really well a few weeks ago and all of a sudden I just couldn’t hit anything. I was caught between the two planes. My issue was I was rolling my hands and I was standing straight up. Thank you so much for this video. Not all videos are created equal. This one by far is my favorite and helped me understand what I was doing wrong. The other issue I was having that may help other viewers is I was not turning my body I was using my arms to put them in the slot on my back swing. I think it is key to turn your shoulders and let the arms follow. Thanks again you Rock! Ps do you have any literature that you recommend in regards to stack and tilt ?

I'm very glad to know that this lesson video resonated so well for you!! With regard to not all videos being created equal, it is important to understand that the videos, lessons, and drills on this free channel - while fully aligned with the swing method I teach - address a variety of topics, issues, and common flaws/fixes from one episode to the next. They are certainly not intended to be taken as a sequential learning platform like the structured curriculum of my online school, which I strongly recommend to anyone who truly wishes to get on the proper path towards learning and owning this swing. For just $10 US/month or $99 US/year you'll have unlimited access to a comprehensive members-only system for the full swing, the short game, and much more. The school's intuitive course layout greatly simplifies the entire process through succinct, step-by-step videos, and I'm constantly adding new content. This will really put you on the fast track towards learning everything in a well-organized, self-guided fashion. Here's a link if you'd like additional info: saguto.golf/p/golf-swing-simplified-tom-saguto-pga. As for literature, you can purchase a copy of the book titled "The Stack & Tilt Swing" by Mike Bennett and Andy Plummer, which I recommend to anyone wishing to have a reference manual for the deeper, finer points of this swing. Great Video. It is important to tell people about the feel of the transition in the downswing though. I have always had a one plane swing and played great for years then lost it. Until recently i watched Jim Hardys video that explained the feel of the chest and abdominals moving as hard left as possible in the downswing. A video on that may help those who dont have access to the tapes understand the more body dominant one plane swing
@SagutoGolf
@SagutoGolf 4 жыл бұрын
Feel is always subjective that's why I try to make a point in some of my videos that you should practice these moves in front of a mirror. You'll achieve a better awareness of feel that way instead of guessing. Jim might feel his downswing start with the chest and abs. I might feel my downswing start with the right arm. You might feel your leg start the downswing. What matters is having the feel that produces the right look and good results. :D

Consider that the ideal downswing path is the ideal downswing path, regardless of whether you lift the club up and must then "drop it in the slot" or - as taught here - you just put it in the slot to begin with and keep it there! Oh that part about keeping your arms further away from the body really clears up a lot as to why i find this method tough. With my driver i try and go further and further away from the ball and that gives a nice draw on it and my playing partner said do the same with your irons (he is a level handicap). I did not understand as i thought with irons you have to come at a downward angle but you can still do that watching Tom. I will go to the range tomorrow and stay further away from the ball and hopefully that gives the same result as the driver.

IMHO and after 50 years in golf and instruction.... If you want to teach it simply and quickly, the golf swing is not about positions.. it is about alignments. There are two shoulder planes and one of them is useless. There is the shoulder plane as Hogan has it (his sheet of glass) in his '5 lessons', then there is the Turned Shoulder Plane. In your lingo Two Plane and One Plane. Homer Kelley was about 50 years ahead of PGA teaching in the Turned Shoulder Plane alignment and generally getting useless "shifts" (which without exception involve "timing") out of all parts of the swing. Problem with Kelley was he wrote The Golfing Machine like an Engineer (terrible writing). Plus there was the outright discrimination and smearing by the PGA Industry which likes to make the Golf Swing so complicated (they want to charge for endless lessons). TGM is not one swing, it is an Encyclopedia of 24 components of the swing, the several variations of each component, and which ones fit together for the golfer's predominant individual Motion/Action. Teaching the "single plane" eradicates any potential of problems with about 5 or 6 components. Want a quick fix? Your lie issue with the Turned Shoulder alignment can be fixed in 3 swings.. try this .. Once you have them on plane, shift their cognition. 99.9% of golfers don't realize it, but their grip and cognitive alignment are straight down the shaft to the heel of the club. Without explaining why, tell them their grip, right trigger finger and thinking during setup should be "aimed" towards the sweet spot of the face (instead of the default of the shaft line). In a few swings, this suggested "aimshift" with adaptable students, and as if by magic, they will reposition their arm and hands so they stay on the Turned Shoulder plane and the full length of the bottom of the clubface is involved in the balanced compression of the ball. You are getting lefts and pulls when you just teach the one plane without this note because their heel of the club is hitting the ground milliseconds first and he's getting uneven compression or just a plain closed face. If you want to see the visual on this, take a look at Juli Inkster's swing. First she sets up old fashioned, then a split second before she begins her swing, her hands and arms shift into proper alignment for her, then the swing starts back. Jo Ann Carner (another LPGA hall-of-Famer) tried to teach her proper alignment. Carner couldn't get Inkster worked out until she told her "to do whatever she had to do" to get her hands, arms and trigger finger aimed at the sweet spot on the face. Inkster worked it out to do it in 2 steps of sorts. Set-up, then shift into the swing. Carner then became pizzed off at herself, because she had taken a competitor she could easily beat, and turned her into LPGA Hall-of-Fame class competitor who was always up her sss when Carner was trying to effortlessly win her last couple of Majors and quietly retire. Sorry that was long, but it's Spring and I can't start with my students because everything is COVD-19 closed. Plus I'm getting old and there is so much history about golf and the golf swing which is getting lost under the weight of PGA MegaCorporation today-only-PR and general bullshat. The least I can do is leave small drams of it at places like this. If it helps one person, that's good. ;)

Noticed that your feet are splayed open. Hogan did not approve of that method where he insists that the right foot should be perpendicular to the target and left toe toward the target. I am an older golfer in my early 70's and flexibility is becoming more and more a problem. When I open both of my feet I have noticed a little more flexibility on the backswing and the follow through. Just didn't think that was orthodox since Hogan was a stickler about it. Now that I have seen you do it I am feeling a little more confident about it. I like your dipping your left shoulder down to the ball on the backswing - me it was a more of a flat shoulder turn and consequently the two plane swing. Keep up your excellent videos, thanks James T.
@SagutoGolf
@SagutoGolf 4 жыл бұрын
That is a key setup component for this swing, James. We need to allow our body to work with us and not against us, and you are now feeling this by opening your feet a bit! Here are a couple of suggestions: 1) If you'd really like to get on the fast track towards learning this body-friendly and highly effective swing, please look into enrolling in the SagutoGolf online school. what's your take on Moe Norman single plan swing?
@SagutoGolf
@SagutoGolf Жыл бұрын
Thanks so much, @Shannon McCleery - I sincerely appreciate your support and I'm very glad to know that you are enjoying my content! With regard to Moe Norman, while the Stack and Tilt system I teach shares a one plane feature, it is definitely different from the "single plane" version patterned after Mr. Norman's swing and for this reason I do not recommend crisscrossing between the two methods as it could lend itself to confusion. This should not be construed as a knock against Mr. Norman's renowned ball striking prowess or the style of instruction that he inspired; it's simply that some components of that swing method are not compatible with S&T. So although some golfers have had success developing a "hybrid" between the two styles, my best suggestion to those who are “comparison shopping” is to choose one or the other, but preferably not both. I’m going to go to the driving range today and try this again. I’ve been trying this method for about two months and when I hit the ball good it really goes. But when I hit the ball bad it’s really bad. My problem is, I think, I’m not finishing my swing on the downswing. Any comments would be certainly appreciated. Thanks Tom

Think to keep yours feet on the ground just rolling towards the target. NOT LIFTING or pivoting. At the down swing you push side way your left foot tooling towards the target WITHOUT LIFTING THE LEFT ONE (no feet move until,the ball is gone) and quiet hand, pendulum no manipulation. Wide stance and far from the ball. Moe Norman was the master look on youtube

Hi Tom, I like your nice personal story of getting more "on plane" throughout the swing...the 2-plane concepts were really taught to everyone due to the 1930's 40's and 50's Byron Nelson model (Father of the Modern Golf Swing) or the doofus PGA schools and their disciples. (and Nicklaus was Mr. 2-plane himself) Many hated the genius of Ben Hogan, who basically did it better and more efficiently with an under the plane of glass swing, which was beautiful and won more tourneys in the shortest time of any golfer that will ever live (when he made that motion produce a fade and NEVER go left). I think they just hated the Wee Ice Mon and his self taught swing and Cold demeanor. He was tough to get any info from or get close to, God bless him. You are a cool guy, hope I learn to go around and around better watching your cool vids.

Why do people choose a two plane swing then?

Love your channel .. Has helped me a lot in my golf game. A question ... At address, do you extend your arms in the same way as Moe Norman does?

I'm glad to know that you are enjoying and benefiting from my channel's content, Kamal! In answer to your question - no, in this swing method (Stack and Tilt) we allow our arms to hand down naturally from the shoulders. Cheers! Tom

@@SagutoGolf ... Another question. Is it OK if I were to pre-set my hips in an impact position at set up? Or just push my hips slightly more to the left at set up?

Hi. Thanks for this video. Two comments. Jim Hardy doesn't recommend the hips turn. This place is to noisy for taking this kind of video.

I'm Tom Saguto, and I do recommend a hip turn. Why? Because I also recommend a shoulder turn. And if our hips are allowed to turn 45 degrees on a tilted angle, then we only need another 45 degrees of shoulder turn for a full 90 degrees. This body-friendly, powerful, consistent, low-maintenance swing system I teach is rooted in physics, geometry, and human physiology, and as such it does not discriminate by age or ability - from kids to seniors and everyone in between, inclusive of the best players in the world. With regard to watching videos from different sources, please be careful in navigating the muddied, overly-complicated, oft-conflicting realm of golf instruction. It's best to embrace a system - whether it be this body-friendly, powerful, consistent, low-maintenance method or another - put your blinders on, and stick to it. And if it is the system I teach, then please strongly consider enrolling in the online school and taking your learning - and your game - to the next level. That's where - in addition to detailed lessons and drills that take you through the entire swing step-by-step from setup to finish - you'll find diagnostic tools for identifying/resolving swing and ball flight issues when they arise, plus advanced level courses, and much more. As for your 2nd point, I think you'll find my more current material to be much quieter courtesy of a microphone upgrade. TS

HI, Loving your videos. Is the one plane swing apart of the stack and tilt system ? as i am aware you are a member now. Thanks

Thank you Marcus! Think of it this way - Stack and Tilt is a one-plane backswing but not all one plane swings are Stack and Tilt

Thanks Tom. I got confused whether to lift or turn more around my body . I find the one plane swing is much easier to be consistent. I was worried my swing would look too flat as I’m quite tall. Can you still compress the ball coming from a flatter angle
@SagutoGolf
@SagutoGolf 2 жыл бұрын
It depends what you mean by "flatter angle". This is a one-plane motion back and through without any independent lifting of the hands and club. Through proper execution of the tilting, turning, and extension components - and without any active manipulations such as rolling or snatching the club inside - the shaft should work up the correct plane, with the hands deep behind the trail shoulder at the top and lead arm matching or very close to the inclined shoulder plane. From there you can absolutely compress the heck out of the ball. If, on the other hand, your lead arm is well below that shoulder line - or if the lead shoulder did not work appropriately downward or leveled out at some point during the backswing - then that would meet the definition of too "flat". I have a habit of rolling the club inside sometimes, I think that what makes it look flat or under plane.
