@GuukanKitsune2 жыл бұрын
Well, as odd as it sounds... if a German Shepherd dog lived in Italy, it would indeed be an Italian German Shepherd. German Shepherd is the breed, Italian is the nationality. Same with Sagwa. She is a Siamese Cat (breed) who lives in China (nationality), making her, indeed, exactly that: a CHINESE(adjective) Siamese Cat(breed). I know, it sounds wierd, but my home tongue gets like that. Something can be grammatically correct and still... wierd. Like how 'Buffalo buffalo buffalo Buffalo buffalo.' is a legitimate and grammatically correct sentence.

@*kuma * But isn't the whole deal with animation is that we can do thing differently? Themes, artstyle, storytelling ect. I just cannot shake the feeling there's a void where those action shows left, things like Justice League Unlimited or Teen Titans, those are the shows with morals and compelling character arcs amidst smaller misadventures with other characters, but I always remember there being a lot of heart in just about every episode of JL. Some with higher stakes than others but all the same very strong impact. Will that void be filled? I'd like to make sure it does. Those lessons were absolutely timeless.

@@jaketucker2559 傻瓜, pronounced "shǎ guā," is a common insult. Literally, it means "silly melon" or "melon head." (Supposedly, this is why the Chinese Harry Potter subtitles translate "mudblood" as "melon.") Her and her siblings have melon names. Dongwa is "冬瓜," Winter Melon (a wax gourd), pronounced "dōng guā," and Sheegwa is "西瓜," Western Melon (watermelon), pronounced "xī guā." And according to the book, it's because the oldest was dependable (a wax gourd will keep through winter), the youngest was sweet, and Sagwa herself is a clumsy moron who falls into things, a melonhead. Things like pots of ink, hence her black markings. (Most of the others have Chinese names. "Fú-Fú" is a play on a homophone and means "lucky bat," their mother's name is "small wind," their father is "daddy darling," the Magistrate's daughters are "white bean," "green bean" and "yellow bean..." I can't figure out if the reader's name means anything. Chinese isn't even close to my first language.)

I remember watching this at my great grandma’s house a lot. PBS was one of the only channels she could get but I didn’t care. I miss her a lot and remembering this show and looking it up has brought back so many memories.

I had Hay Fever about 2 years ago and took like 2 Benadryl and was watching PBS cause that’s what I do when I’m sick.. they ended up playing one of those commercials where they play all the snippets of old PBS shows from the 90’s and early 2000’s. The theme song for Sagwa came on and I burst out in tears. I called my sister bawling, telling her how our childhood was over and this show was something that always brought me joy when days were rough. 😭❤️🥺

I used to watch this when I was smaller, and I wanted a siamese cat named Sagwa... Actually, I still would like a Siamese cat named Sagwa.
@saddasish9 жыл бұрын
(Okay, this really ruins your childhood, even mine considering that I'm Chinese myself:) Realize that Sagwa is a slang that means "insane person". Literally means "melon head", but it's usually a negative term to call someone. The more you know. Now you can use that to call someone, just not to name a cat.
@ElegantAries9 жыл бұрын
greenmeanie Wow... Right in the childhood :(.! Now I gotta think up of a new name for a Siamese cat then. Thank you for telling me.
@goguma469 жыл бұрын
greenmeanie growing up and remembering this show, it makes me think if sagwa is supposed to be Korean, because her name will translate to "Apple" instead, and seeing the the characters' clothing somehow identical to traditional Korean clothing
