A Waray folk song that has becaome popular throughout the Philippine archipelago. The dance is probably a late choreography to the folk song. There are four versions to the Lawiswis Kawayan dance: one from Kolambugan, Lanao performed by the Waray settlers in that place. Another version from Eastern Samar uses a "bangko/puruk-anan" as an implement to the dancing. The male dancers have a mango leaf on their mouth in one figure of the dance.
The two versios from Leyte are very distinct from each other. One version is performed with female dancers holding two branches of the "kalipayan" bush and are swayed in time to the music. This version is usually done during house blessings. The last version is the one described in the classic Waray stage play "Diri Bata, Diri Ulitawo, Diri Inasaw-an". As described, the dancers hold one internode of a bamboo with leaves on it. The dance ends with a pose holding the nodes into one long bamboo pole.
Given below is the Lawiswis Kawayan song which was traditionally sung alongwith the musicians who play the dance music:

LAWISWIS KAWAYAN
(Tanauan, Leyte version)
Ako magtatanum lawiswis Kawayan
Akon la kan Pikoy palatay-latayan
Salbahis ka Pikoy an imo paghuni
Naghatag ha kalag, hin' ak' kalipayan
Bulahan ka Pikoy, ka Pikoy, tikang panginaun
Nagpili hin sanga,tinugdon, hinapun.
Unina malupad, paglupad iya karantahun
Kundi pagka kulup mabalik guihapon

I also happened to dance the Lawiswis Kawayan during my elementary days in Samar. We perfomed the version where the boy's have a mango leaf bit by the mouth (signifying the gross parrot (pikoy) as the song states and we danced on top of a chair. That was very cute :)

The music is pure Filipino. Tthis kind of music is called " balitaw "a type of folk song or music and the dance was created for it. How do I know ? I am a folk dance and song researcher.

Yes there are. Serious dance researchers discovered that Chinese elements are found in the dance "Paypay de Manila", "Binislakan", and "Sakuting". The music used in the last 2 dances are very Chinese. "Silong sa Ganding" of the MAguindanao is Hindu-Veddic influenced while the many versions of the Lanceros came from the american square dance "the Lancers"

You have a different lyrics version. The one I gave is the version as sung by the Mabuhay Singers in their second all-Waray language album released sometimes in the 1970's (unattested). The same lyrics is found in the book of Eugenio and Gozo. There is also a totally different set of lyrics to the same melody found in the book of Francisca Reyes Tolentino.

I dont think its that bad. Spanish would be good because its universal. But its for the Spanish people. For us Filipinos, we have alot of native languages to choose from. Ones that can speak of our soul and identity. :)

Speaking of Mexican Don Miguel1810 arnt the Mexicans the ones who lost their Culture and Heritage entirely to the Spainards? While us Filipinos have won back our Country and to this day still have our own Culture fully intact thank you for noticing. There are more FOLK DANCES than these Spanish influences you are viewing in this Video. :-D

you have a very limited view of what culture is. spain imparted good things to us as well, like this dance, this music, our faith in God, literature, our nation, our heroes, and that nostalgic past when our lolos and lolas spoke or understood each other in Spanish. ...

You have to define Filipino first. Try defining it in these contexts: Agta, Agusanon Manobo, Bagobo, B'laan, T'boli, Kalingga, Ivatan, Maranao, Maguindanao, Tagbanwa, Ibanag, Bukidnon, Subanen, Samal, Waray, Cebuano, Bikol, Tagalog, Jama Mapun and the list is longer before you can say American (or Filipino-American)

While we can not turn the wheels of time back, it would be more rational and human to focus on what is good and edifying. Let's not scratch healed wounds. Let's not cry over spilt milk. We'll only be sour treasuring and harboring ugly pasts. Move on.

You have a very limited view of what Filipino culture is, mo... C'mon, as saiaopinoi said, stop blaming the past. Its you who should rather be blamed for lacking the intelllegence to appreciate what is beautiful in us. Too bad you don't speak spanish, i suppose, (it shows in the way you write). If you only know the passion of our heroes This dance mirrors that past!

These "Filipino folk dances" are not based on original Filipino culture, but rather the Mexican and Spanish conquerors of that country... The music is NOT Filipino in any way.
