You asked about sailing on a broad reach in light airs (I haven’t read all the comments so I hope I’m not repeating anything below) You are right about the main shadowing the Genoa. You can, as you did, drop the main and it probably is not adding much at all. There is another option often used when racing, you can sail angles, meaning deliberately sailing higher than your intended course for a while, this should keep both sails set nicely and give you higher speed albeit not quite in your desired direction. Then your course to your destination will gradually become lower and eventually you sail on a run rather than a broad reach and pole out your headsail again presenting a lot of sail area and again getting good boat speed. If you really want to get technical you can link your GPS and watch your VMG (velocity made good) to judge how well your doing. Usually the increased boat speed at least makes up for the extra distance sailed and on some hull styles can be faster overall. Secondly on your diesel bug problem. If you have killed the bug (and keep killing it when you get more diesel in case your supply is infected) but you will have a a load of dead bug sludge in your tank and the only solution is to drain the tank. Most tanks will have a low point drain and that’s what you need to use that drain (not a suction system). The bug actually grows at the surface between the diesel and the water, there is always some water in diesel and it accumulates at the bottom of the tank so the tanks are designed with a low point drain but the engine pick up is deliberately higher so it avoids the water and sludge in the bottom. Remember to put bug killer into any jerry cans too, it’s no good putting it into the tank as you refill from the jerry can because the jerry can will have grown bugs while it was stored and then you pour the sludge into your tank. Good luck and thanks for the videos, you’re quite right the British Coast is beautiful.

Hey Richard, thank you so much for taking the time to write such a detailed reply, that really helps! I think the options in the future as you say are changing the angle of sail slightly, learn to use a light wind sail (not a bad idea) or just drop the main. With regards to the bug, we have installed a 'diesel dipper' which uses a pump to pull from the bottom of the fuel tank and then has a water/ gunk separator which gets the crap out before sending the 'clean fuel' back to the return. It's not a perfect solution, but it's been good to us all year and we've only changed our filters the once as a precautionary measure sailing around the Scilly isles, which are super rocky and so we wanted to make sure all systems were on point and ready to go. 🙏🏻⛵️

I pick limpets with a pointed knife. Boil them in sea water and fry garlic and onion whilts the pimpets are ready to peel off the shell. Boil spaghetti. While spaghetti is on the boil pour tomato puree on the fried onion garlic add red wine and pour the cooked limpets in the mix without the sea water. When the spaghetti is ready mix the limpet sauce in the spaghetti. Voila! ready for plating.

Light wind sailing is an art in itself, if you release the boom kicker, this will allow the sail to 'belly out' creating a more emphasised wing like sail shape, sheet it in to about 35/40° from the wind, the head sail will do 70% of the work and the main will provide the rest, if you have the balance right the autohelm should do very little work, trim the sails to your course not the other way round. Great video guys, I sailed that coast extensively and it is breathtaking.

The best way to learn sail trim is riding with a experienced dingy racer. The sail trim is much faster and noticeable on a 14-16 foot dingy than a large cruiser. They know what makes the boat move. Just find the local racing club and ask for pointers and a ride. Don't try while they are racing, things move much faster and you won't be able to ask questions. Does not take too long to learn what makes a boat move and what to avoid.

I agree …. Spinnaker. But Symmetric spinnakers are a pain in that you have to watch them or they collapse and if the wind pipes up, can be a handful. I recently started using an asymmetric spinnaker which is like a huge jib. It’s no good dead downwind but perfect for a broad reach. Keep a watch on eBay - they do come up.

Definitely no frying I wouldn’t fry them at all. Put them in a bucket of fresh sea water overnight ( or in your home prepped salted water ) perhaps add a sprinkling of oats to feed them. When the water is on an gentle boil put in them in an return to the boil and when the limpets fall from the shell they are ready - no Not over cook. Then gently twist and pull the head away from the foot and discard the head. You are left with the chewy foot and the black guts. The black guts are often discarded but are totally edible. Then eat them fresh from the pan with crispy rolls and perhaps a dash of Tabasco - perhaps with some egg fried rice Above all please do not fry limpets you are destroying all the flavour of the shellfish

Always an enjoyable video. A few tricks when shadowing from the main - if dead behind we push the main to the ‘wrong side’ and hold it there with a preventer brought back to the cockpit. Then the Genoa I attach an extra line and take that to a block as far aft as possible like a spinnaker. Works great in light to medium winds. If that is not ideal using the Genoa alone is best for good steerage as it is ‘pulling’ the boat along as apposed to twisting against the keel. Although with our boat depends on wind position as our main is bigger than our Genoa, hence we sometimes bring in the genny and use the main only. It’s all trial and error mainly 🤣. In very light winds we have an asymmetric spinnaker and that is just amazing 🤩 but not used as much as the other tricks.
@CadohaAdventures
@CadohaAdventures 2 жыл бұрын
Nice, some food for thought. When the wind is dead behind that's fine, it's just that point where it isn't quite directly behind you, but it's in-between that and a broad reach, so a really tight angle that starts the blanketing.
