Sailing Solo Across the Tasman Sea : Sailing Alone Series
Hello Friends,
After more than a year exploring New Zealand it was time to push off across the notorious Tasman Sea. Plan A was to sail to Tasmania and explore its wild islands and coastlines before heading North after cyclone season had finished. Play B was to make landfall at Eden just above Bass Strait and Plan C was to sail to Sydney to clear in.
I had been nervous about this passage for a long time as the Tasman is known to be a very dangerous bit of water. I choose my weather window wisely and pushed off on my last leg across the Great Pacific Ocean.
I have a special episode coming out next that covers my entire Pacific Adventure and talks about how I got into sailing and when I first bought Triteia.

The best compliment I can offer is that I have absolutely no interest in sailing but comfortably sit, for hours, watching your crossings. A close friend of my Father's (An Aussie. We were living in Singapore at the time, so it was his starting point) sailed solo around the world. This was in the late 80's. My Father met him at a stop in Rio (They partied hard). This is my only connection to sailing. Hats off for crossing the Pacific. Looking forward to what's next. Lots to see in Oz. Thank you for sharing.

@@SailorJames ... and I guess that’s why we all love your channel so much ! I was not sure I could watch such a long video of a single person on a long passage, but I got hypnotized by the story telling, your choice of words, your thoughts / philosophy, and of course your videos and editing : I really felt I was « with you » the whole time (true, raw filming). And like another person wrote : I am not a sailor but everything you said ans showed made sense to me. In a way, I wish Joshua Slocum, Henry de Monfreid or Bernard Moitessier could (would ?) have filmed their adventures... but it was another time, they wrote books, and I am so happy they did : these treasures will always stay with me ! Now, I will follow your example and read Magellan’s stories. Sending all the best from land near a canal in Brittany, France. PS: Wonder what Rhonda thought of your corn pancakes 😉😂

I'm an old salt who never sailed. I marvel at the chance watching you restore such a dream boat. My first airplane was $9,700. Needed everything, mostly a loving pilot. Then I became one. I was in another mans garage ignoring what we came in for just staring at a XR250R motorcycle. He asked me "Do you like that?" He said "take it" the owner will never be back. That bike opened up the world of adventure riding in Mexico. I travel with tools, food, spare parts always solo with great appreciation for my health and being part with the cycles of each day. My best friend in life is me. I see the same with you. We are never alone.

About a year and a half ago, I stumbled upon a KZfaq video about some guy who sailed from LA to Hawaii on a 30-foot sailboat. "What?! You can't do that!" A good trip James. I have crossed the Tasman 4 times and the fastest trip was 10days. The first passage was the best. It was in 1976 and the start of a 5 year circumnavigation. As far as communication we had none. I phoned home 5 times in 5 years. I did write letters which I found ckearing out my parents home. 10 to 11 pages long they did suppirt most of my stories but without the sex, drugs and rock and roll!

huge congrats! and much respect i began watching you when you left LA and have looked forward to your uploads feeling as though i was sailing with your, your candor and delivery are real and when i saw this documentary was an hour and a half i had to experience this last leg of the Pacific journey. this has inspired me to start research what boat would be good for me. im an artist/educator for 20+ years as i feel we all are that visual thinkers. i sailed some in my 20s in the gulf of mexico on a 2 man hobie cat and have always enjoyed being by and in the see even after flipping the hobie cat with no life jackets and swimming with dolphins and sea turtles the waves 6-9 ft swells on a trapeze always had me thinking about sailing more. your work and energy have inspired me to start planning a year in the gulf and caribbean sea after i retire next year. i will be 55 the double nickel. i need your advice on some things like what size boat i think a boat like yours and older model maybe 32’. im going to volunteer as a deck hand on a sailboat this summer to learn as much as i can about sailing solo. my first stop will be el salvador as i have a friend who lives on the coast literally on a hill up from the beach who is a culture maker as well who surfs daily and travels the world for his art practice. Congrats again Sailor James thanks for inspiring vision to see the beautiful planet we get to exist on!! 🌊 ✊🏽💥

@@SailorJames Well said. That sounds like excellent advice again..The Tassie gives me the shivers even when viewed from the air. The very nature of the Tasman sea and its core personality is guaranteed, to deal a sailor some really bad cards if that window is closed, . Im guessing that it would be rare, for a passage of water, especially when conditions are good, to regularly deny a sailboat its chosen port of call? conditions. Oh there is one I can think of. The Cook Strait haha. Ive been turned back to Picton, more than once. Yup that water way turns you around at the 95% mark The Tassie could be well described as the Cook Strait's, crazy uncle.. I could certainly understand it, if they renamed it The Cook Sea.

Marvelous video! Very much enjoyed the footage of you sailing the boat, especially putting in the reef in calmer weather and setting up the wing and wing. Just like being there with you. It was somehow touching to hear you talk about how Rhonda would be laughing at your efforts to mix the fritter batter, I guess because you have been alone for so long and, seemingly, without that kind of connection to another. I'm hoping she is going to join up with you in Oz, and the two of you will adventure together? Very best to both of you - looking forward to whatever happens next.

Great sail!Ive been watching you from the start. This was a good ending to a massive crossing. You’ve really done well for a 30’ boat nearly 60 yrs old. Your recap was the perfect way to end this crossing. Will be watching for your Aussie adventures.
