The new trailer makes a big difference that's for sure! It is much easier to maneuver. M

Hey you guys needed to have the truck and trailer slightly farther into the water. Raising the boards by 2 inches could be offset by backing in or out the same amount. Back the trailer in as far as you feel comfortable but don't be shy. The nose of the boat needs to be winched right in tight to the yellow V bumber on the trailer. If you can't suck it up without the boat touching bottom than you're not deep enough. When it's pulled snug to the V bumper make sure the back is square between the boards and you should have no problem. Thanks and good luck next time. Don't pull it out like that again please.

That was the first test out of the box so to speak. We never cleared the ramp before it went back in. The adjustments worked out ok, there were more than pictured, but we still didn't have the boat far enough forward. Exhausted from the Fl summer heat we put her back in the dry slip, tied the trailer down then returned the next day. That boat ramp has claimed many tow vehicles - I have a deep fear of joining that club. It almost got us during a difficult high wind recovery so I try not to get my truck tires wet. The new trailer guides have helped a lot but I haven't found the sweet spot of a true float on trailer yet. We don't trailer on the road so the yellow V cushion isn't critical. Thanks for comments M

Thank you for the kind words. This new trailer is sooo much better than the rebuilt junk yard dog we had. It cost a lot more and we are still trying to position the boat on it correctly but I'll never re purpose another one!

Great video. Love your honesty to get through this situation. I myself have a dim view of trailering. Many people when they first get into boating want to trailer to save money on marina fees and have the freedom to travel to new areas to boat. But experience is that anything larger than 21 feet is trouble to trailer. If its a sailboat then you have to factor in the keel and I would say around 18-19 feet max. When I talk to newbie thinking about getting into boating people, I tell them to pony up the money pay for a marina instead of trailering.

I'm glad you liked the video. It was a very difficult project on a hot summer's day in Fl. The wet slip fees and rent for a 25 foot slip in our area are nearly $300/month. In our case we could "pay" for the new trailer in about 16 months. That's part of the story. A half ton pickup or large SUV is required to safely tow the Hideaway. Add $20 grand minimum for a vehicle then the wet slip becomes a bargain. The questions are: How often will you trailer it to that distant port and how long will you keep the boat. The math worked for us at the time, but 7th decade age related issues put us hard aground.

Try "Salt Away" against rust. A rinse you hook up to a garden hose or pressure washer. It comes with bottle and sprayer attachment and a liter or so of concentrate. It is safe for gelcoat and trailer. It dissolves salt away after boating and also leaves a thin protective coat (inhibits any remaining salt residue from forming rust, water soluble, but some extra protection until next time). Doesn't smell or sting the skin or discolor paint. Non-toxic. A little goes a very long way. I use it on my old-timer to rinse the undercarriage after winter driving.

We use a similar marine product to flush the outboard motor. It too hooks up to a bottle sprayer powered by a hose. I've not used it on the trailer or hull. The trailer gets a though fresh water wash each time it is used. We use a marine biodegradable soap for the hull and topsides. I don't think the salt product leaves a film, so I'm going to see if I can find "Salt Away" or similar product. Thanks for the tip. M

Great work. I highly recommend checking out the Rhodes 22 trailer setup. Great to see you posting again. Cheers

Thanks for the suggestion. We made some adjustments to the bunks because of it. We looked at the Rhodes 22 before getting our Compac 23. Both are well designed but the classic look of the Compac won us over. That being said I bet the Rhodes is a lot faster.

You did a very commendable job, there in the water and later answering all the comments. May I ask, how far apart are your bunks? Or, off center? Thanks

Sorry for the delay in response. Com-Pac set the trailer up for us and we did not change the bunk locations. They could give you the exact measurements. Located in Clearwater Florida - the phone number is 727-443-4408. Gerry has been very helpful over the years. Have a look at my video "Selling Hideaway - Oh No" to get an approximate location. The bunks don't bear much weight, they primarily keep the hull upright. To our great sorrow, our age have caught up with us- Hideaway has a new owner.

Just because it is marketed as a trailerable sailboat doesn't mean it's a good idea to do so. Money spent for a dock is money well spent. If you're in Florida take it home in the summer, cover the boat and save the gelcoat. If North take home in the winter. You'll develop friendships in the marina that will last a lifetime. Best times of my life spent at Toledo Beach Marina on Lake Erie aboard a Morgan 32

Good advice. We kept the Hideaway in a wet slip for years until the slip rent increased beyond our means. Our marina allows sailboats to keep their masts up in the dry slips next to an adjacent ramp at an affordable price. We bought the new trailer with plans to tow the boat to destinations we couldn't make by sailing. Buying the trailer worked out for us financially, but we didn't expect age related problems to develop so fast. The new owners keep her in a wet slip. Friends of ours had a Morgan 32 - We sailed with them often on Tampa Bay. Great boat!

Boat should be on a travel lift so it can be lowered on to the trailer bunks to adjust the fit. Back the truck up until the boat can be floated on to the trailer without the winch.
@SVHideAwaySailingHideAway
@SVHideAwaySailingHideAway 2 жыл бұрын
I agree, using a travel lift would have been much easier, but we don't generate enough income here to afford one. I have great concern about the boat pulling the truck into the brine as has happened to others using this ramp. We had a close call where the salt water was bumper deep. I was careful not to spin the wheels, using the brakes as a clutch, to make good my escape. Then spent sometime flushing the underside of the truck. We are getting better at judging water depth/ramp position to the various tides. Thanks for your insights. M

@@SVHideAwaySailingHideAway I understand your concerns ! I’ve had that issue, no travel lift. I used the winch on the trailer to slowly let the boat and trailer go further into the water while the truck sat higher up on the ramp. We were able to retrieve the boat the same way once the boat was floated back onto the trailer. Didn’t need to even get the truck tires wet 😁. Good luck, enjoy your boat, I miss sailing 😕.

Shut that women up! Never crank a sailboat on a trailer, just backup. This is not a motorboat with flat bottom.

I had a experience like yours a few years ago. I bought a trailer for our Oday 25. They said I would have to fit it to the boat. Everyone at the dock wanted to help, that was okay but it became a hinderance. After a couple of hours , all the local experts kept telling me the trailer wasn't made for the boat , it will not fit I can't use it. It started to rain so they left. I stayed and fit the boat myself , I had to loosen the bunks a few times and pull the boat out of the water enough to out weight on them. I had to do this a few times along with cutting the bunk supports as they dropped bellow the trailer and contacted the ramp. The cutting was the worse part of it all. After about 4 hours on my own I pulled it out and strapped it down. I live 100 miles from the bay and my driveway is very steep, no problems. I do wish the tounge was telescopic as yours , mine is welded solid and very long. That makes manuevering difficult. The keel support on your trailer looks too weak...too much flexing. Your boat will slide fwd if you don't install a bow stop or move your roller aft. if you can ?
@SVHideAwaySailingHideAway
@SVHideAwaySailingHideAway 3 жыл бұрын
I can't imagine doing all that by myself, especially with your 25 Oday! I had a crew from Germany and Chile. I think their strong point was that they had no boating experience. We did a lot of measuring and adjusting the bunks in the Florida summer heat. I was grateful for their help. I agree with you about the 2 x 6 keel board. My old trailer had a 2x12 but it broke during a difficult recovery. I finally added steel angle to each side. I'll probably change it to a 2x10, but for now we just want to sail. I was able to verify this is the correct trailer for my Compac 23, Its in within the axle specs. I have tall keel guides to center the boat during recovery and recently added trailer guides. - There are videos on my site. -These make recovery much safer and easier. To keep my truck out of the salt water I want 4 feet of water 20 feet out making the tongue extender essential. We moved the boat about 6" forward for better balance. To do this meant moving the winch stand as well. It wasn't hard, but we had no idea what would happen, all went fine. Stay safe M

I should probably define that technical term. I believe it originated on the Great Plains where the HideAways grew up. Letsse if you look on your atlas where the south eastern corner of North Dakota meets the the north eastern corner of South Dakota right where the folks live who like small sodas, well - hmmmm... you really can't see a skosh there either 'cause when the map makers drew the border lines they went right over the only known skosh! Well then, a skosh is something that you can't really see but it does exist - sort of - in the minds of the HideAways any way...yes

Painful to watch. Just back the g$%d%$ trailer down a bit. There is no winching up a heavy boat when it's sitting on the bunkers.

If you think it was painful to watch you shudda been there! That ramp has has a long history of swallowing tow vehicles so I was too conservative. Remember one of the founding concepts of the Sailing Hideaway site is you're just as likely to see a mistake as you are to see something actually work well! That way you don't have to make the same errors we do. Thanks for watching and thanks for your comments- they are much appreciated. M

Don't ever fit a boat with to many experts. Do it yourself. Best time for a boat on a trailer to fit is in winter time. When there is no so called experts around. Also always block your wheels. Better then someday have your vehicle in the drink or use front of vehicle to use for launching. Also much easier when boat floats and no winching to line up.and easier for vehicle to pull out and let boat drop on trailer easily.

July in Florida is not the time to set up a new trailer. My old trailer barely made it to the dump before it fell apart- We just couldn't wait for better weather. There were no experts involved in this task! None of us knew what we were doing and all of us knew the consequences of making an error. My son had a friend visiting from Germany who figured out the math and my Son in-law from Chile made a come-a-long using two large C clamps and some chain to retract the old trailer's tongue extender. The rest of us turned wrenches. It's all good. Thanks for writing- M

I didn't plan on that many. Somehow it turned into an international event with helpers from Chile and Germany, plus some experienced sailors from Gulfport. I don't know if we would have survived the July Fl heat/humidity without the extra help. After everyone left we started to move the Hideaway to her slip and realized she was very unbalanced on the trailer. Too tired to relaunch, we used the hurricane tie downs to control the tongue for the night. Gulfport, at that time had concrete anchored tie downs, six per boat. They have since removed them. Thanks for writing! M
