Mitch, last summer, I talked to Gerry at Com-Pac about the deck core material of the 23 -- gotta look up the info he sent to me, but once I have it in hand, I'll report back here. ⛵

OK, found it -- it's on page 4 of the Com-Pac 23 manual (copying and pasting in that part about the deck here): "Your COM-PAC 23 deck incorporates core materials which will not deteriorate or delaminate. We use three types of core materials; a micro balloon resin mixture; foam in thicknesses varying from 3/32" to 1/2"; and as an alternative a honeycomb material. Micro balloons are made from sand (silica) which is "popped" much like popcorn. This forms a tiny, hollow sphere particle which resembles face powder. We mix these micro balloons with polyester resin to form the light-weight core material. This material is then sprayed on to the deck to the desired thickness. The foam or honeycomb material is used on large horizontal surfaces that require more thickness than is possible with the spray on micro balloons." For those of you who want to grab up a copy of the manual on the 23, reach out to info at compacyachts dot com to request the PDF. Fair winds, ~ Chelle

Very interesting. That’s great information from the source. Yes, this boat will last forever. Thank you for passing that along.

Thanks for this video. I'll be picking up my restored 16 from Hutchins in a few days and this video has given me a lot of inspiration. Happy sailing!

I own a Galion 22, made in England for the OSTAR trans-Atlantic single hand race back in the early 70's. It has a ballast/displacement ratio of 48.5, but it draws 3 1/2' and doesn't have a sliding companionway cover, just a tombstone opening into the cabin. It's very stable and sails beautifully but kills my back getting into and out of it. So I just bought a CP 23 Mk2. Now trying to move the Galion along to a new owner who will use and appreciate her.

Wow the Galion 22 is a good little offshore boat. Excellent capsize screening number. I’m surprised the Com Pac 23’s number isn’t slightly better. It’s well over 2.0. I always feel very safe and secure on the 23 regardless. I hope you enjoy your Com Pac as much as I do and good luck with selling your old boat. I’m sure it will be gobbled up quickly by someone.

This was great seeing different setups with the sailboats. I love getting ideas on modifications for mine. I am still trying to figure out to t make a jib downhaul that is quick to setup as a trailer sailor.

You’ll have to try the ole bungee cord and rope to tiller steering method. It allows me to leave the cockpit while still steering the boat. So going forward while solo isn’t quite as foreboding. But nothing beats a good downhaul.

Hey, Mitch! OK, so commenting here as I watch -- re: the jib reefing - I have never personally done this, but I've been reading a bunch of books written by Lin and Larry Pardey and they did do this -- at least on Seraffyn, their first sailboat. From what I took away, they liked being able to reef the jib because it meant carrying less sails onboard while passage-making. RE: a CP 23 as a cutter rig -- my first 23, SV No Mas, was just that, rigged and set-up by her 2nd owner, Ron Chappell, who also wrote for Good Old Boat Magazine. I have some info that I can send to you on re: her rig, via a website Ron created about No Mas. More soon! ~ Chelle

P.S. I should have clarified that by ‘jib reefing,’ I am alluding to actual tied-in reefs on the headsail as opposed to using a furling headsail. The Pardeys had their headsail made with reef points, like how a mainsail would be constructed with reef points.

Exactly, old-school reefing. Too easy with a furler. Where is the danger in that? lol. It would be easier than swapping out sails alone for sure.

I love the website Sailboat Data. I’m kind of a sailboat numbers nerd. I love comparing boats. I think that’s a reason why I settled on the Com Pac 23. I love its numbers. Thanks for watching and commenting. I really appreciate it.
