Boat:
White Shadow is a Van De Stadt ‘Seal’ 36 (11 metres). She is hand made in steel, 2004, with a round bilge (hull) and a modified coach roof. This makes her a ‘one off’ and in my opinion the most beautiful Van De Stadt 36 ever built.
The camera gear:
Main camera is a Panasonic Hc- V770 with a Rode External mic. My old camera is now my number 2 is a Panasonic Hc-v700. Most shots are done with an external mic (Shenggu sg 108) with a sponge and dead kitten attached.
Action stuff and small blogging is done with a Sony Hdr-as30v.
Underwater video Gopro3plus.
Editing:
Final cut pro on a Macbook. Most of the material for each video is filmed over a period of several weeks or so and the editing of each episode is normally done over a day. This process can take longer if original music is used or permissions are needed for copyrighted materials etc. Much time is spent sorting out technical problems. In this case I normally get the help of a younger person who understands computerie stuff!
There are also times when filming, editing and uploading is not possible due to being at sea or in locations with no internet access.
Content:
I have found that filming and releasing material over a period of time is better than doing ‘vlog’ style videos and trying to make episodes out of whats happened in a week, regardless if it’s good content or not. By filming over a period of time I can be more selective in what goes into each video. My aim is to avoid ‘bland and mundane’ and have at least one or two exciting and interesting events in every video. Every video has to be entertaining.
Comments and being at sea:
I love reading your comments. Most weeks Im able to read everyone. I cant reply to everybody but I do read and enjoy them. Keep them coming! There are times that It might seem I'm not on the internet for certain periods, this is normally when Im at sea on passage. While Im out on the Ocean I have completely no communications with the outside World.

Just a thought on your main-sail: Don't trash it! Slice it up into strips and make it available for those who would like to pay for a strip. Let the folks at home have a little something to say: "Look, I got that from that Old Sea Dog!." I'm quite sure the patrion supporters would love some of that :)

Hey Bazza. Hope you're safe and well. Just a quick correction. No big deal. That Navy vessel (L01) is the HMAS Adelaide. It's a Canberra Class Helicopter Landing Dock. 6:00 now that is uncomfortably close. At least it's not a big boat catching lot of the wind gusts. Also number one on my list of things that make my blood boil is: people who anchor too close and then get mad like it's your fault 👀💁 I love that you show every aspect of sailing. Remember, even when you're angry that the engine isn't working, that you're stuck on the boat because of quarantine, bad weather, etc..... there are many people who envy your lifestyle and would switch places in a heartbeat. Edit: stupid typo, it's so hot here that my brain refuses to work 🙈
@philgray1023
@philgray1023 4 жыл бұрын
That's not close. You should see the moorings in Pittwater. My first night I was convinced we were bumped. The next night and almost every night we were actually bumped. The marina operators actually know that the boats hit and just laugh about it. I'd feel happier in Barry's steel boat than my plastic one in those circumstances.

See if you can find a copy of Minerva Reef by Olaf Ruhan. A Tongan yacht with a lot of young men aboard hit the reef in the 60's and were there for months before building a canoe from wreck timbers and sailing to Fiji. He also wrote one about traditional whaling out of Nukualofa. Still cold here in NZ so get the woolly knickers ready as it gets colder every day heading down.

The last time I saw a sky that purple was from the cockpit of a P-3 on the approach into Cubi Point in the Philippines. We couldn't see the ground, and there was no definition to the clouds. It was just deep purple/blue in all directions. It seemed like we were suspended motionless in a sphere. I had never seen that before, and haven't seen it since, until your video. It was scary enough flying through it. I don't think I'd want to sail under a sky like that.

Starlink is gonna change the internet for a lot of these remote areas. When you pull into remote places, if they get that system they will have significantly better internet then what they have now. However, I am hoping they develop a shipboard solution (which really hinges on the antennas they develop). So even if folks don't have it on their own ship, hopefully more marinas/ports/businesses will adopt the system and at least you will have something significant while ashore. Look for it to be available in the next 2 years-ish.
