I make moves to sail my Nicholson 32 'Stowaway' singlehanded from Bucklers Hard on the Beaulieu River to Pin Mill on the River Orwell.
After waiting out a Force 9 southwesterly I head out to complete the 170nm passage over a 42 hour period. Stopping only for sleep or to wait for the wind. Intercepted by border force twice on the approach to Dover and endure the inconvenience of running out of cooking gas.

For future info. Kettle of boiled water . Take gas cylinder off the boat ! Pour kettle onto outside of cylinder. Where the gas level is, the water will condensate showing level. The empty portion of the tank the hot water will steam off. Keep up the excellent work Sam

Made virtually the same trip in March 2016 with our new to us Westerly W33, We made it all the way to Portsmouth from the Hamble (!) then had to wait out weather before running non-stop from Portsmouth to Ipswich with a pit-stop for fuel in Brighton 'cos from having *way* too much wind it went to no damn wind at all! Had the advantage of being two handed but by the gods was it bloomin' cold!!! 27 hours non-stop, a full English in Fox's marina yacht club, sleep and beer. Cracking trip.

I've heard foxes do a good breakfast. I was spoilt on arrival by being invited onboard a friends' boat for breakfast. After the cold night crossing with no warm stuff I couldn't believe my luck!

Nice boat! She has a lot of potential! Just pick away at it a little at a time. And keep it fun! I had the pleasure of sailing on Gipsy Moth lV in 2019 when she was at Bucklers Hard. What a nice coincidence that they were offering day sails at the same time as the Beaulieu Autojumble!

Excellent video Sam. I love your clear calm explanations. I am OCD when it comes to safety and to hear you say something like, "I am just sailing with the Jib in the Orwell as it's dark and I don't want to me faffing with the mainsail in the dark" was reassuring. I felt it for you running out of gas. I carry one of those small camping stoves and cannisters just in case. I have subscribed as your explanations are clear, clam and natural and easy to understand. Well done. I would be interested to know the passage you took through or around the London Array wind farm.

@samsails9820
@samsails9820 2 ай бұрын
I think there is a compromise with performance if you are going for a heavier boat with a long keel, there was quite a bit of research done on performance but out of many of those long keelers in the ultta heavy class, the nicholson was a good contender against the likes of twisters, halycon, etc
