I have an old 1950 long keeled classic. I started off my sailing career with 4 knots for planning purposes. I now use 3 knots as my guide, I now sail far more and hardly use my engine at all. In fact it irritates me having to put the engine on. Great videos.

Thank you for sharing your experience Tim, that sounds like a wise method to use and I look forward to a passage on Britaly where I'm not in a mad rush to get back home to my girls, so that a more leisurely approach can be taken - which is one of the main attractions of sailing!... Best regards, Chris

@@SailingBritaly hi Chris. My old boat has taken me to a new and quite different life. Right Royal was the first ocean goi g racing yacht that the Royal Engineers commissioned. She has done about 15 Fastnet races with the Engineers and the owner prior to me sailed around the world in her with his wife. I am currently in Valencia. I sailed there last year from Corfu and thought I would meander back this 2020 year. Hopefully I will make the journey in 2021. Best wishes on your future sailing but always remember that meandering is best. Since I slowed down I ha e discovered anchorages and bays that I didn’t know existed and that I had sailed past on towards the place you should go. I spent my life designing and building hospitals around the U.K. and the Middle East and lost all my property and money in the banking crash of 2008 however it was, without doubt, the best thing that ever happened to me, I am now a pensioner who can have a most fantastic life with my 2 boats and friends and partner. I have recently bought a lighter plastic boat that will be more appropriate to Med conditions. My old boat is a little heavy. I am still not sure which I will keep as I have that emotional connection to my current boat, but time is available and my intention is to compare the two until I make up my mind. Best wishes to you and you young family.

Hi Chris, I've watched lots of sailing channels, but none of them have shown the difficulties/challenges that a solo novice sailor has to endure like you have done so eloquently on your videos. I got nervous just watching you tackling the shallow waters, and mooring up, all solo , and all without drama !

Hi. Just started watching your channel, I like it. You are transparent, experienced in terms of tech stuff and less so in terms of sailing. I find myself there somewhere in between. Found you when researching diaphragm replacement (just did it, 20 years old, the old one was as new). I do not really have the elevator pitch for your journey, the window for the channel crossing or the longer passages in the future. Perhaps I find it in the older episodes.

Hi Frederik, we live between the UK, Italy (where we are now, on lockdown unfortunately) and the boat. We didn’t “sell everything” to go sailing until we ran out of money, we spent years working on our financial freedom to give us the freedom to go cruising several months per year for the foreseeable future without this being to the detriment of our finances. We spend as little as possible in life, as we value experiences and time together over shiny expensive material things. We plan on sharing how we have done all of the above with our viewers, as well as my technical experience, and our experience as boat dealers (we have never sold a boat for less than we paid for it and we’ve owned quite a few now) to help other people live their dreams instead of watching other people live theirs. I think that about covers it! Cheers , Chris 👍

Ah this is great. Remembering my passage planning test for my DS! Can you paint some 10m marks with bright yellow paint on the anchor chain? One stripe, two stripes etc etc
@SailingBritaly
@SailingBritaly 4 жыл бұрын
Hi Ruaraidh, we had the coloured rubber markers on our last boat and they worked a treat, this must be a different material on these ones. You can paint the chain, but the downsides to that are A) It wears off and you have to repaint periodically, and B) if you ever have to re-galvanise the chain it causes problems as the paint contaminates the zinc bath. Some people add whipped line, some add cable ties, I guess there are many 'imperfect' was of doing this and I'm still working out which is the best way. Very best regards, Chris 👍

Hi Roderick, the three of us are in Italy with Rossella’s family. Things are crazy. As of today it is illegal to go for a walk away from your house in this region. You have to have a piece of paper certifying what your motivation is to go anywhere and there are only a few defined reasons you can be out. You take care too as the only difference between Italy and other countries is the amount of testing they are doing and their transparency. This thing is everywhere already. May it pass quickly for everyone... Cheers, Chris

Hi Chris good to see the family. I'm glad to see that safety is on the mind. The harness, the night lighting , and radar reflector. On a hot summer swim suite type day would you demonstrate your safety harness. I get the part about being tethered to the bout but how do you get back on board? I know you are a mountain climber but I'm pretty you don't have handholds on the side of Britily. Safe travel to you and your family til you are together again.

Hi Tom, the jacklines will be reviewed before the next time they are used. For this trip I didn't have time to fit any dedicated anchoring points so I made do with the mooring cleats. My thinking was something along the lines of this. 1) Don't go overboard. 2) If I did trip then the jacklines would be very likely to stop me from going overboard. 3) If I did go overboard I had envisaged getting washed backwards to the stern where there is a sugar scoop style transom waiting for me with a pull down swim ladder always present. I was pretty confident that I could get back on board from there. 4) In the worst case I carried two box cutter style knives with me in my jacket so that I could cut myself free in the very worst case if I couldn't get back on board (one knife as a spare in case I dropped the first) I could have then used the PLB which was on me at all times (the yellow pouch on my waist belt) to raise the alarm - this sends a tringulated position to rescue services via GPS and also transmits a signal for a homing beacon so the search team can pinpoint you even more accurately. I've also done lots of sea survival courses for my offshore job, so I could have put some of the techniques I learnt on those into practice too. The best option is always going to be number 1) so in future I intend to fit dedicated strongpoints close to the boat's centreline so it is physically impossible to go overboard whilst cipped in. There is definitely room for improvement in this system but it was the first time I had ever used jacklines and I didn't have the time to set up a perfect system prior to leaving. I do believe I was a lot safer with my system than I would have have been without it though. Best regards, Chris Rossella & Emma 😊

Chris, not sure if you’re still monitoring older videos. I’ve just started watching. Have you taken YMC Coastal practical?

Hi there, I’ve never done any practical sailing courses in my life. I did the Yachtmaster theory and exam via distance learning and I did a powerboat course with CEVNI and Short Range Certificate, but the only sailing lessons I’ve had were from a mate of mine from my RAF days who taught me to sail over a few days on Lake Garda. Everything else I’ve just learnt by doing. I hope you get out sailing again soon! Cheers, Chris 👍

Hello, Excuse the uninformed question: going from your departure to Ramsgate, was there an alternative to taking the shallow depth option ?
@SailingBritaly
@SailingBritaly 4 жыл бұрын
Hi there, here is a chart centred on this section of the trip: webapp.navionics.com/#boating@8&key=%7Bk_yHcw~E There are shallows all over the place and the deeper water channels have tons of shipping in them: www.marinetraffic.com/en/ais/home/centerx:0.8/centery:51.4/zoom:7 Here is an animation showing the currents in the area (press the play button to see them change): www.yr.no/kart/#lat=52.67204&lon=-6.234&zoom=5&laga=straum&proj=3575 It's quite challenging place to navigate and this was my first time ever sailing through these places. Cheers, Chris 👍

Thanks Chris, great video as always, Quick question how deep is your depth sounder in the water or do you have the offset taken into account?
@SailingBritaly
@SailingBritaly 4 жыл бұрын
Hi Richard, thank you! Our depth sounder is set up with the offset so that it gives you the actual depth of water, rather than the distance from the transducer to the seabed. They can be set up however you like (some people prefer them to read the water under the keel) In our case I prefer to know the water depth as this is more immediate for me to do tidal height calculations, dead reckoning and so forth. Very best regards, Chris 👍
@CheersWarren
@CheersWarren 4 жыл бұрын
Sailing Britaly Chris, 100% agree , you can't relate to the chart depths if you adjust the echosounder to depth under the keel . Cheers Warren

I think you need to consider how your Jackstays are run - from the shots in this and part 2 it looks very unlikely that the jackstays would prevent you from going over the side - if that were to happen while on autopilot sailing you would get dragged behind the boat with little chance of getting back on board....
@SailingBritaly

Hi David, I’m going to review the setup for the next trip. I was in a rush to get going and I still think these imperfect Jackstays are better than not using jackstays... Cheers, Chris

Nice that you got to spend some time with the Family whilst alone on-board . Have you set up a wish list at all so we can try to help you out with much needed stuff? Maybe an idea over on Patreon :)
@SailingBritaly
@SailingBritaly 4 жыл бұрын
Hi Vince! The lowest I saw in this video was 1.8 metres but yes that was cutting things very fine and my heartbeat was a bit higher than normal! Some people prefer their depth sounder set up to tell them how much water they have under their keel but I prefer it to tell me the actual water depth as this makes it easier for me to navigate when taking tidal heights etc. into account. Whenever I want to know how much clearance I have I subtract 1.65 metres from whatever the number is on the sounder. It's personal preference really and both options have their merits - the important thing is that everyone on the boat understands what the number on the sounder is telling them and what the boat draws! Very best regards, Chris 👍

You wouldn't want to negotiate that shallow channel on a falling spring tide. If you had run aground then at best you would have been there until the next high enough neap tide to lift you off maybe a couple of weeks or a month away or more if you went aground on a very low spring tide.
