This is the second video in a multi-part sailing/cruising review of the Seawind 1160 Lite. We had the opportunity to cruise aboard a Seawind 1160 Lite for three days alone to really get a feel for if this boat will be right for us. We vlogged about our trip and we'll be sharing what our thoughts are about the boat as much as possible.
We're seriously considering the Seawind 1160 Lite for our next boat because of the long list of positives this catamaran has to offer. Here's just a few of the most important ones to us:
Size - We don't want a huge cat.
Seaworthiness - Plenty of Seawinds have circumnavigated.

Seawind 1160 is a brilliant solution for Florida and Caribean cruising. When you see one at a boat show you tend to think it is cheap because it is clearly a sparse open deck cat with an enclosure added. It's like looking down on a friend who only has aluminum patio furniture in their home until one day when you go to a party there, have an absolute riot, and the next morning it's cleaned and reset in 20 minutes with no more effort than hosing off some puke. Dude, you're a genius!

I never thought much of catamarans until I saw this and the previous video from you. The space in that cockpit and living accommodation is amazing. I'm glad I watched these videos! It's sadly unlikely I'll ever own a boat, being retired and well away from coasts. But I can get a taste of the life watching your boat tours and this catamaran has been a treat. Glad you got to experience a Seawind in her element, under sail in fair winds. 15kts and comfortable seas are nearly perfect conditions and gave you a great day on the water. Add a screacher or code zero headsail and pickup another 2kts of boat speed but the tradeoff is that once you exceed 10kts over water there will be some spray off the bows. Not necessarily a bad thing and she will still feel very stable and under control. Cheers from SoCal and best wishes to the expecting parents!

Most importantly, congratulations on a new family member . Maybe it's just me but 310 grand is a lot of coin . I know I have to compare apples to apples so yes it's priced right compared to other cats. It would probably take the average sailor a couple of mono-hull upgrading trades to move up to a boat like this so I'm thinking the market age over 45 at least. The beauty here is the single handed ease of sail, speed and stability. The more I look at her the better she gets. Fair winds.

I was on the 1160 Lite last weekend in Sydney. Beautiful boat. I had the same thoughts about the rear benches. I want to be able to lie down somewhere in the cockpit for a snooze. They have addressed this with the Seawind 1260 which has a nice rear lounge and table with the BBQ on the side. I’m not sure why you want to go faster with the 1190? That has been designed for racing and would be more difficult to sail single handed. The 1160 is no slouch and with a young family, safety and ease of sailing is more important. Like you say with a screecher and an Asymmetric on the 1160 you’d be laughing!

It's one of the best features. You can really feel the boat pick up another knot or so when they come out of the water. The Seawind 1160 Lite is faster than the 1160 with diesels because of this.

Exactly!. I searched far and wide for an older smaller cat with a outboard. I finally got it. I was so sick of boats and engine problems and the problem of working on inboard engines. Not to mention the cost. When I saw this boat and the two tucked away outboards. I smacked my face and thought. ... ok maybe down the road. lol

Ya, I like the ease of maintenance of an outboard but you need to change those fule filters every 40-50hours... Not convinced that I can get a 25HP Yamaha around the world.

@@michaelzietlow280 I am pretty sure I haven't put 5 hours on my engine in a year. I only use it to dock/anchor. So I am convinced you can. lol even if you could not make a circumnavigation on one engine, the repair or maintenance is pennies! I don't know Marina in the world that can't outboards serviced. Then again my 30 ft cat is so light and has a 48 foot mast. IT literally can haul butt in 1 knot of wind. Seriously interesting little boat. But I do like this 1160 for its size and comforts. Definitely a new contender. Will have to charter one and see for myself. Before knowing about this one I favored the Gemini 105's

@@michaelzietlow280 outboard filters are cheaper than diesel filters. You can get fuel line filters cheap- and 40-50 hours is a long time with a sailboat- if that is even the change interval..

For me it is between the Balance 442 and the Seawind 1260. The Balance has daggerboards and has the versa helm...but I love the galley down in the 1260, the quality of the build, their warranty policy and the value for money.

At 4:20'ish if Randi was not onboard would the reef point in the main been eliminated & the main close hauled for better performance? I have sailed many mono, cat & tri hulled vessels that made way like a scalded feline probably at or above its design limits possibly "tip toeing" on the edge of its theoretical limits; I find many of these "modern" electronic sail performance "indicators" to hamper intuitive acumen.

Love your videos, particularly this one. I've been researching the 1160/1190 for a while also and, while I appreciate the benefits of the outboards, here's my biggest concern (and this applies double to electric OB's): I live in the US and would want to be able to take the boat to the Caribbean. I really don't like week-plus passages (and my wife likes them even less), so I'd want to take the "Thorny Path" (which I've done in reverse, but not upwind). If you've read Van Sant's book "Passages South", making this route "thornless" involves a pretty decent amount of motorsailing or even flat out motoring. I just don't think the OB's would be up to it, and the range would be too limited (with a higher fuel burn rate and only 72 gallons). Other than that, I think the 1160 is an ideal boat for us and seems like for you two (three) also. Just something to think about.

they both have diesel options, with that in mind, I wouldn't do the thorny path on a catamaran, especially a smaller one, the bridge slap beating into the easterly trades would be torture.

Great series of videos on a great boat. Can you please flesh out your idea of repowering with electric outboards and batteries? How much battery storage do you think you’ll need for an acceptable range under power, and do you plan on a diesel generator to add to your range? Thx and good luck.

I haven't done the actual calculations because I'd need to talk to an engineer for that, but just from experience with our own electric conversion and using the Seawind 1160's numbers, I'm thinking two 10 kW outboards with around 20 kW of lithium batteries would be ideal. That would most likely give a range of around 40-60 NM without any other input. Max speed would be the same as gasoline, but the range would be much less. I'd rather not go with a generator as that would add a ton of weight and complication, and smaller performance cats are very weight-sensitive. If we were building a 50 footer I'd probably go with the genny because the payload capacity of a bigger cat is much more.

I'm personally a bit more inclined to the 1260 mainly because I like the cockpit more and those 3 extra feet for just a bit more speed, though the 1190's daggerboards and lifting rudders are awfully tempting. I was really excited about the 1370 since a 45 foot lwl would be great, but it's following in the FP/Leopard/Lagoon "floating apartment" style that I'm just not totally sold on. I think Ideally, I would have a 1260 that's got daggerboards and lifting rudder, stretched to 45 feet with a dual SD20 oceanvolt system and 4kW of solar on top.

Randy is getting BIG (something I am sure she does not want to hear.. LOL)! There are some women who seem to be made to be pregnant (none of the changes seem to affect them (I have friend who could not have WALKED on that boat without getting sick (she got sick in Norfolk HARBOR alongside the pier (on a 545 foot destroyer!)). Looks like you are homing in on what you want and expect from you next boat. While I love the tour videos I am eagerly awaiting to see (sea) what boat you guys get, how you make it yours, and starting your journey...

Look at an older Gemini. You could change out the inboard with an electric and they only draw 18" with boards up. It is also affordable for a couple with a baby on board.

Although lots of people enjoy their geminis, my biggest problem with them is the narrow beam. They don't perform the best and aren't the safest offshore catamarans out there because of this.

A 1190 electric is the cats meow. Induction oven, max solar with lithium batteries, diesel generator for backup power, electric outboards and SCUBA air compressor. Coastal cruiser and Bahama's. Agree with ditching the bench barbie and got with rail mounted. Check out Evan Dick's testimonial on Sea Wind web site blog on his very customized 1190 with 140hp (not sure if that's diesels or outboards and if he kept the dagger boards or went with mini keels)?

Great video, I would be interested to know what would be the set up for the electric outboards vs the current ones and how will they compare in performance... Speed and range.. like you said with enough batteries but not to much to make it heavy..

That sounds kind of small in terms of the battery. You should only use 70-80% of the range of the lithium batteries too. That size of battery would get my car 40-60 NM (it has a 16 kWh battery), I don't think it will get a catamaran that far though.

I would estimate the amount of battery power to go a certain number of miles in this way. It is about 10 kWh = 1 gallon of gas to travel the same distance in a car. So if it takes 6 gallons of gas to go a certain distance with two outboard engines, it will take 60 kWh to go the same.

so a general, "overall" question for my much more experienced sailing friends here....how does a cat (and I'm thinking about this 1160 in particular) handle in rough weather? I've been a single hull sailor all my life, but I have been finding myself feeling tempted by this beautiful boat. But I am wondering how they handle intermediate waves and higher winds. And I'm thinking about on passage, as in crossing the Pacific from LA to Hawaii or across the Atlantic. How would a cat like this compare to a single hull? Does anyone have any thoughts or experiences they might be willing to share? Thanks for taking time to read my comment!

I have owned a Lagoon 380 and now a Leopard 38. I have a friend that owns a Seawind 1160. Ford Chevy, Doxge? All are about the same. Not a big fan of,the outboards , and lack of a living bridge deck cabin kinda limits it as a true liveboard tho.

I've never been on a catamaran, not even a small Hobie Cat. However I do understand the advantages of a small Hobie Cat in that it's easier to keep them upright since you're weight is further from the mast. Not as much need to hike out as on a small/dingy monohull. But none of this really pertains to a LARGE cat. Since I also watch LaVaga videos I've seen what goes on on a cat. There have been repeated remarks about it being a "house". ? ? ? And it really seems to me that a catamaran is a slick pontoon houseboat with sails. To their credit cats are stable and often faster than monohulls. But the thing I like about every monohull I've owned is the dynamic nature of sailing them. You feel the character of the wind as well as the sea state. The amount the boat is heeling always tells me so much about many aspects of a day's sail. I would add that due to these things it takes/requires more skill to sail a monohull well. Now, a large cat typically won't heel very much. And if a cat heels to the ultimate degree (mainsail near horizontal) then the cat is probably on it's way to capsizing. Whereas a monohull will off load the force of the wind and return to (more or less) upright - and continue sailing. And here's something I just realized, a cat, if it is hit with enough wind to take one hull out of the water now not only has the sails catching the wind but also has the large under surface of the boat catching wind. That will aid in the boat going completely over. This isn't possible on a monohull. Wind speed can vary throughout the day and sometimes radically. I'd rather have a boat that, in the worst case, will still be sailing after the worst has passed. I must add, however, that I am not a cruiser. I haven't done any long voyages. Scott W

@@HueNarcisWorld You are right. But it is probably more rare that a monohull capsizes. However, large swells broad side to a monohull, plus strong winds with gusts are the most likely to flip a monohull. But I think the same could be said of a cat. In the end there are many differences between monohulls and catamarans. It's up to the perspective buyer to understand those differences and pick the type of sailboat that fits them best.

Great to see how Seawind has proven itself to you beyond your first review. This is really a great boat for you two. If you're going to circumnavigate, you might think about the 1160 with diesels, but if you want electric outboards, this might be the best platform. I'll be retiring onto a Seawind in 3-5 years out of Asia, and I wouldn't hesitate to live aboard the 1160. It can take you wherever you want to go, in comfort, for an incredibly reasonable price. Well done.

Cruise in space with the Vulcanista I know the economy of the diesels is better but would gas motors not work ok too. I thought I seen a few wharrem cats with this type of setup and they sail all over the world, almost all sailers I have seen has a lot of issues with diesel and algae or crud growing in the tanks

Jordan, were you comfortable with the helm position? Did you have clear sight lines of the bow since you have to look through a pair of glass. It seems to me that the helm location is like driving a car from the back seat.

Yes, the helm positions in my opinion are perfect for a few reasons including visibility, protection, proximity to the saloon/cockpit, low enough that they don't require the boom to be too high, comfortable, and close to being able to see your sails and handle the lines. I'd even argue that I had less visibility at the Endeavour 32 helm.

I enjoy your videos. Also congratulations on the baby coming.The one thing I would not do is electric power.It leaves you dead in the water too much.Plus the thousands of dollars and battery weight would not be for me.The help with Green Earth I support and understand, but the 2 small 4 stroke outboards are not doing much harm.In life or death sailing give me an internal combustion engine.....I have 50 years in the auto industry and can say the worst dependable and highest maintenance vehicles are full electric and hybrid vehicles.That would hold true on the water...The danger is also there with high voltage electric engines with sea water such as flooding. A shock from a 300 volt DC system is pretty much the end....Fire departments are not allowed close to a flooded electric cars.I have seen the training and the car has to stop sizzling before ,as the car company said" Probable body removal".

For a 40 footer the little out boards seems kind of cheesy. For long term and distance I really think the cat is the way to go. Who want to have fun when in the cabin on a reach if it means you walk around on the walls of the cabin. The space is well worth the difference. Lots of people hang on to mono hulls out of pure stubbornness,

Some hang on to monohull due to necessity. You can get a decent monohull for $10k and refit for $20k and have a great boat. I haven't come across a cat where you can do that.

Hi I watched your video till almost the end don't worry I'll finish it. But what stopped me was you mentioned Electric catamaran my ears perked up like a rabbit ears. I am looking into buying a catamaran out of Grenada Georgia so I think it is. Anyway these are older boats in very good condition but the engines are old I need to be replaced. Seeing is that they need to be replaced I was thinking about Electric motors in the catamaran now I would need two of them of course but I don't know where to go to get them somebody suggested to me to buy a smashed up Tesla. That might be a good idea but I need to engines and I prefer to have them the same age. Can you tell me where I could go to begin this journey of looking into putting electric motors into a catamaran which would get its energy from solar panels. Thank you

You might look into the Sailing Uma channel. They bought a boat with a defunct diesel so replaced it with an electric motor, one made for a forklift I believe. They talked about this on a recent video, their time with an electric motor as they have now replaced it with a gifted electric sail drive.

Yes your right . They did . I've watched it. They used an d forklift motor. .but thanks I am also using their channel as a reference for what I'm trying to do . I guess you could say. It was their fault . I got the idea from them . Lol

I like the living space and all but my biggest hesitation with cats is something I don't see addressed on You Tube. Marinas. Some marinas charge cats double for the beam and I know some that have a 20' limit altogether. It's a nice thought to say "I will always be at anchor or an a ball" but its not realistic. The reality is the marina market is halved (I think) with a cat. Never having owned one, I don't know for sure how much of an issue this is. Seems it could be bothersome.

I've been considering a catamaran and the price is double in my marina. Not to mention haul out facilities, extra fees for insurance ect. I really want one just not sure if I can justify it.

Sorry Tony but you must not have a lot of experience on Cats. You don’t need a marina with Cats, plenty of solar/wind turbine generated electric and if you are smart setting up a battery system to make an A/c system available isn’t hard at all. Investing enough money in battery storage for a/c is far cheaper because you don’t need marinas at that point. You complain cats are 2x more expensive but they provide a living experience that doesn’t need a marina.

I know that the 1160 lite is designed as an offshore weekend cruiser but for you guys think that it world work as a budget blue water cruiser? Given that it had all the same basic structures and features as the regular 1100s, except with outboards, for you think that potentially it could cross an ocean?

Don't get me wrong. I like the idea of the push button extra crew person, but I personally love hand steering. It takes all the stress of regular life right out of me. If you're fatigued after a day of sailing, you're doing it wrong. Just my opinion.
