Get ready to witness the most insane sailing adventure of our lives! We took on the worlds most treacherous waters in the Furious Fifties and captured every heart-stopping moment on camera.
The furious 50s live up to their name! We go where few KZfaqrs have gone before as we sail around the world and make it into high latitudes. Brace yourself for this ultimate thrill ride for adrenaline junkies and sailing enthusiasts alike. Oh, and find out if Curtis and Kate perform a successful recovery during their offshore man over board drill.
#SailingAdventure #Furious50s #ExtremeSailing
About Us:
We are two young racing sailors that decided to leave life on land and accomplish our goals of sailing around the world and learning about and experiencing different cultures. Originally from the Great Lakes, we left Newport Rhode Island in July of 2019 after refitting our boat DIY style. We then sailed to Maine, and from there down the East Coast of the USA, around Cape Hatteras, to the Bahamas, Back to Miami, and then to the Virgin Islands.
From there we headed south to Grenada to escape hurricane season, then back up to St. Maarten where we launched our first Atlantic Crossing to Horta, Azores. We made a quick trip back to the USA in July of '21 to defend our Chicago - Mackinac Race overall title, then it was back to cruising the Canaries, where we launched for our second Transatlantic voyage, sailing to Brazil in South America and on to Uruguay.
Our goal is to sail around the world via Cape Horn, and that is where we are headed now. Capturing footage to share this epic adventure with you as we round the horn and venture into the canals and fjords of Patagonia, Chile.

Curtis reminds me of Tarzan in later parts of the Edgar R. Burroughs book, when Tarzan wagers with the British officers that he could kill lions with only a knife. The officers are in disbelief at the candor with which Tarzan takes the bet. ‘A wave just broke over the whole boat’ like it’s a casual affair. Thanks mate!

Awesome way to wake up to first cup of coffee! Thank you for sharing your adventure! I earlier mentioned my great grandfather being washed overboard after going around the Horn. His name was Edward Michael Devaney on the barque Callirhoe out of Liverpool. Washed overboard "by heavy seas" at Latitude 45 S, Longitude 85W (off the coast of Chile) enroute to San Francisco on 16 June 1886. If you are in that area after emerging on the other side of the Horn, please give him my regards!

@@sauerjoseph It’s not always scary down there. I went round Cape Horn the cheats way - on a cruise ship. We set out through the night and I had my seasick pills at the ready, having been warned by the crew about the bad experiences they’d had. Woke up and it was flat calm. I thought at first we’d gone back to Ushuaia, but out on deck there it was. We couldn’t believe our luck! What a thrill it was to go round the outside of the Horn and be able to stand on deck enjoying the ride. Flat calm though the water was, the wind would have cut you in two and it was freezing. I certainly don’t fancy doing it in a sailing boat!! We’ll find out soon enough what the Rucas did. Hope they had calm seas and were able to do the outside route.

@@the-fiddling-fox : Thanks for your calming assurances. I've watched the old Captain Irving 1928 footage, and it really scared me. I also had a really bad experience on a sunfish as a young lad (almost drowned). So, I am overly scared of rough water. I could NEVER do what you did, and definitely NOT what Kate and Curtis (and Roxy the dog) are doing. I will probably remain scared stiff until they get firmly into the Pacific. I will be really heartbroken if something bad happens.

@@sauerjoseph The Capt Irving film was a hoot! We watched it on the ship the same day. I loved it. From the tracker on their website they are safe and sound so no need to worry. If they are doing the classic circumnavigation via the capes, they’ll be staying in the southern ocean for a good while longer but who knows they might head north for some sun. 😉 Easter Island would be an interesting pit stop.

Hi Kate and Curtis. Just completed watching the last of your 104 videos - OK it took a while. But is was similar to not being able to put down a good book. I'm totally impressed with the sailing skill sets you both have. As well Curtis, can't help but be impressed with your technical know how. Sufficiently impressed to ask when and where you acquired those skills and knowledge (i.e. removing and repairing the core damage, installing new sailing software and with a complete rewire and interpreting weather data to plan routes). Anxiously waiting to watch your journey around Cape Horn. Good luck and stay safe.

Hi Michele, you got this! You can do it! We believe that you can do anything you set your mind to. One thing that may be better than ASA for this type of sailing is to visit a local yacht club and join a racing crew, you will learn a lot very quickly. Don't go offshore unprepared though, sailing the cold waters of the 50s are the real deal. Remember, both of us are very experienced sailors and had thousands of miles under our belts before we bought the boat. Our boat is also very well prepared and we have all the safety gear.

Note a considerable improvement in the taste of fried eggs if you salt them before the white sets. So crack them in the pan with the salt right there and sprinkle in immediately. I don't know why but it works.

Is there a way to recharge the batteries using the forward energy of the boat? A drop over the side charger or using the prop spinning to spin a generator? It would save fuel and wear on the engine. ?

Nice! -- QUESTION -- Can you explain in detail how that flag symbol, on your electronic weather chart, is read? Which way is the wind blowing - from the top flag part to the bottom or from the bottom up to the flag top? What information does it show precisely. (I tried googling this but surprisingly I can find no proper explanation)
@SailingSweetRuca
@SailingSweetRuca Жыл бұрын
Good question! Try googling "wind barbs." They are read with the wind blowing from the top down in the direction of the top of the flag to the bottom. Each line on the flag represents 10 knots, 1/2 lines are 5 knots. So, 2 full lines and 1/2 line is 25 knots. If there are triangles, get out if dodge! Here is a link for more www.weather.gov/hfo/windbarbinfo
