Gulf of Mexico, late July. We got about two hours warning via VHF (no cell signal where we were) that a line of thunderstorms was coming. It was still over eighty miles away, but it was coming at us fast and we were sailing straight at it. We were right between A and B, with no time to reach either one and nowhere to duck into in between.
It was a beautiful day. We were sailing close hauled in about 12 knots of wind, with full main, 110 jib and Bimini top up, sipping a beer and relaxing with the autopilot on, when the VHF started squawking about severe thunderstorms and small craft advisories. We immediately dropped the Bimini and tied it securely. Then we put in a double reef, just in case some weather arrived early.
We sailed a while longer, listening to the reports, which of course seemed to get worse and worse. NOAA was reporting 60mph on shore nearby.
After a while we said okay, lets get ALL this canvas down, and fire up the motor. Then we finally got some cell signal, and saw the line of thunderstorms on radar for the first time. That's when we decided to stow the jib altogether and bag the main. Last but not least, we folded down the solar panels, lashed them down, and put in the crib boards.
All the while, we had been discussing whether to motor into it, or drop the anchor and sit it out. I ultimately made the decision to keep motoring, which turned out to be wrong, but I was glad afterward to have learned something. When that squall line hit, there was no keeping the bow into it. Daydream turned herself around in about five seconds, while I was thinking oh crap, I definitely shoulda anchored!
I wish I knew what the wind speed was when it first hit, and I wish I had the camera on the whole time. To be honest, I was pretty nervous about the whole thing, and didn't want the extra stress of being on camera. The surface of the water seemed really white for the first couple minutes, and the rig made a really loud spooky howling noise I had never heard before or since. I didn't start filming until that stopped. But there was no hail and no lightning, praise God, and not even much rain.
The camera turns around at 3:00, so you can get a view of the following sea.

Wow two brave souls still in the cockpit, amazing! . . . They left the dock with six, but thats still pretty good. Ha, i kid : ). I have the same boat and keel, 1973. I believe she's tougher than me. Has always gotten me back to shore, to sail another day, knock on wood. I have a tiny storm jib that i wish i could use more, just a little bit of canvas flying gives some control.

We have a storm jib also! It's a wonderful sail, we love it. Paired with a double reefed main, we can sail flat and relaxed in 30 knots of wind. Just not to windward. ;)

You did good. I've had mine out in fairly rough 25 mph wind sailing in big chop. It did a lot better than I would have thought.Once sailing without my wife but with my 3 adult sons we went sailing in 25 mph winds and came back with every inch of the boat soaked with spray or spilled beer. the worse it got, the more they laughed. The wind steadies it against the waves and give you more control. But up to a point. My rig whistles and howls above 20 mph wind.

Thanks for sharing your great videos. What was the windspeed? Looks like 20-30 knots. You did well trying to keep her on line down wind. I'm still learning - if I was caught in this I'd also run my engine at low thrust, keep the boat speed up around 5 knots - I figure that would make a smother ride surfing the chop and it has the added bonus of giving you back good rudder authority. Well done.
@geneneill530

I wish I knew the wind speed! Some old salt could probably look at this video and give a very close guess. We once spent an afternoon broad reaching quite comfortably under just a storm jib in 27 knots sustained, and this was definitely more than that. As far as the motor, we think alike! I left it in the water, running in neutral the entire time. In the end though, I actually dropped it into REVERSE, like a gasoline-powered drogue. It seemed to slow us down pretty well, and give a more stable ride. But I have no doubt that powering FORWARD would also have worked well, had our destination been downwind rather than upwind. We were trying to lose as little ground as possible. Thanks for watching!!

@@geneneill530 Hi Gene, I watched your videos. They are great. You both are showing, what's possible with a c22/j22. My question was: why didn't you used both motor and sail(s) by the stormy wind? I would have been my decision , I also would'nt have dropped the anchor.

Hey Gene, love your videos, just bought an 87 C22 and am planning some similar trips. Just have to drag her a little further as I'm landlocked in the Midwest. A little off-topic but I wanted to ask about your chart plotter being flush-mounted. It looks great - would you do it that way again? Any issues with glare, proximity to the helm, etc?
@geneneill530
@geneneill530 6 жыл бұрын
Paul - It took a very long, deep breath to cut that hole, I promise you! I first experimented with the GPS mounted in a spare bottom crib board, and I thought long and hard about swing arm mounts ... but in the end, I have never for a moment regretted the decision to mount it there on the bulkhead. It's a little challenging to see it clearly from the starboard side, but not much trouble with glare. I would do it again in a second.

Not that bad, really. I'd say four feet at the very most, and not for long at that height. It was only scary for the first couple of minutes when the squall line first hit. Side note: my grandmother's name was Moran. I have a lot of "kin folk" in West Virginia by that name. :)

We recently got back into a c22 and on the Great Lakes in the summer you can get some mean, fast moving squalls. Just curious what size anchor you run and feel comfortable with in a blow like that. Also, with that wind and following seas, did you ever feel in danger of broaching? Hard to keep straight? Nice work keeping cool and riding it out.
@geneneill530
@geneneill530 4 жыл бұрын
We have a #13 Mantus on the bow. It has earned our 100% trust. I'd be more concerned with chafe, or a cleat ripping out, than with dragging. I wouldn't say it was "hard" to keep straight, although the boat did repeatedly try to put her beam to the sea. Without propulsion, that's just what it wants to do. It was a little spooky at first, to be honest, but we were never in any actual danger. :)

@@Kristian_Saile Sorry abut the lack of video. We embarked on what was supposed to have been an eleven day Christmas/New Years' cruise (it would have been our longest by far), but then the forecast completely disintegrated on us. Gale force winds for most of the eastern gulf of Mexico, torrential rain, T-storms ... it was a friggin mess. We spent three good days and nights aboard, and hauled ass right before everything fell apart.

Ah, that’s such a bummer. We are in northern Michigan and have some super wonky weather too the past few months. We are headed down to the gulf coast here in a month for a mid winter reprieve. Dreaming of dragging our c22 down sometime in the future after going through it. We just picked it up in November right before winter settled in. This is our second one, looking forward to having options of places to sail again after a stint with a c27. Anyway hope the weather gods smile upon you for your next sail.
@heinrichcares7718

The gulf is notorious for giant square waves due to the shallow water compared to other seas/oceans. Which tends to make the 'wave interval' faster. I can see the 'squall front' in your video. The squall precedes the storm. The high wind white water you saw is called spindrift. It occurs at about 45 knots when the crests of the waves get blown off. Lucky for you it wasn't a true gale with sustained gale winds and building waves. You were 'lucky' that your motor kept you from broaching for the short squall that you had to run with. As the skipper you are responsible for anything that goes wrong...Every boat that sails offshore is subject to oceans fury. If you plan on sailing offshore get a "Storm Drouge". For your 22 it could be anything (in a pinch)that will keep your nose to the oncoming waves. This is the 'whole point of this post'. This can save you (and your crew). Great video. I have had similar experiences in sailing. You can find weather history available for the dates and places you sailed online. Was this off Cape Romano /Ten Thousand Lakes?

hmm.... how sure are you that yours was the wrong decision? Anchoring was really a reasonable alternative? that, to me, sounds brutal on boat and tackle. but maybe not. All the other 'early' decisions obviously sounded wise though
@geneneill530
@geneneill530 3 жыл бұрын
Thanks! Yeah, it was only "wrong" in that we got blown a pretty good distance in EXACTLY the wrong direction. ;) It was worth it for the experience we gained, but if/when it happened again, I would either drop the hook or heave to. Our ground tackle is up to the job.

To quote sailing instructor John “Sockeye” Calogero: “every boat is a sailboat.” The standing rigging (and hull if enough freeboard) will catch the wind. For an extreme example, look at the last hour or so of the container ship El Faro, when she lost propulsion. Once there wasn’t enough steerageway, she was driven broadside by the wind until sinking.
