One thing I have learned from all this as we begin shopping for our next cat is that it 100% will not be a Lagoon.

I haven't forgotten the shape this boat was in when they got it. Lagoon's poor quality is not even an issue. The quality of the work they've done is the issue. Right there is a lagoon I would put my family on. Absolutely.

In this case “finite element analysis” lagoon engineers did means...they analyzed the finite part where the bulkhead separated and don’t analyze the entire bulkhead for structural rigidity. The Load will be transferred to the connection between hull and bulkhead where no one will see it if it separated.

As a PE, to say the initial design was insufficient would be a huge understatement. Glad to see Lagoon is stepping up to help out owners, but I can't imagine ever purchasing one of their boats. Granted your damage/deformation was minimal and SV Parlay's was enormous, and David's seems somewhere in the middle, but every one of these boats will end up with some level of damage regardless of use case and history. I think SV Parlay has gone above and beyond on their repair....but this kit. Even though it is rather stout, the tabbing and gluing is still suspect along with how the added stress from the additional supports are dispersed to surrounding hull and other structures is hugely unclear. First time I heard a creak in this boat after a repair during a storm would stress me out beyond measure. I am certainly not knocking you or your skills and expertise. I will likely work for 98% of applications, but I just don't know if I could sleep well with my family and friends on that boat.

Yeah Greg, you're right on. What Parlay exposed, but is not seen in this video, is the TERRIBLE job Lagoon did tabbing those bulkheads to the hull. They didn't. Colin exposed them as simply stuck in a big gob of glue, which is not going to hold them in place properly over the long haul if the boat sees any kind of seas. The bulkheads really need to be completely removed, and all the furniture around them as well, so you can get to the how they attach to the hull, and re-do it correctly. Colin did the proper job, and HIS boat I would trust. These add-on kits are really only addressing 1/2 the problem. And what an embarrassing problem it is! Who designed that crap in the FIRST place?!
@gregstevens527

To be fair to Lagoon, they may have data or evidence that the bulkhead adhesive is still intact. Dauntless has done a spectacular job on their previous work, so I have no doubt they completed the supplies procedure as well as possible. What baffles me is how Lagoon even got here in the first place. The construction methodology used on that main bulkhead looks like it was copied off of a Catalina 24. They should have at least extended one of the additional pieces of ply at the top and bottom joints to distribute the stress further. Tough to believe they are able to use this in a 50 without issue ..
@mikemendes7598
@mikemendes7598 Жыл бұрын
@@gregstevens527 What's really funny about that comment is that Catalina never made a 24! LOL And they didn't use it in a 50 (45 actually) "without issue" - they had LOTs of issues. It IS completely baffling. I get cutting corners and all that, but a builder like Beneteau/Lagoon would surely get the engineering correct? Maybe a bean counter said to strip it down. Hard to believe any of it.

Your approach was ideal, present the facts allow them time to respond and bingo they looked after you. Nice boat by the way .... 😊

Knowing how well you've taken care of that 450 it's kind of shocking seeing how much both bulkheads have deformed since leaving the factory. The deformation really wasn't hard to see at all but thankfully it isn't even close to the worst I've seen. I would tip my hat to Lagoon for taking care of the issue they themselves created but they had to be goaded into doing so which is not a good look. Anyone looking at how those bulkheads are designed who knows anything about wood can see it is not a structurally sound design it doesn't take a naval architect. Thank you Tye and crew for filming the repair and what it takes to install the kit even though IMHO it's just a bandaide on a bad design. It should work to keep the bulkheads from deforming further if they aren't stressed to much but I personally wouldn't trust it to hold up to any real abuse/rough seas. Sorry I'm not trying to dog on your beautiful 450 and whoever ends up with her should be able to enjoy her for years, it's just how I see things. As far as Lagoon goes, like I said they handled this extremely poorly in the beginning IMHO... Fair winds, following seas, safe travels and God Bless...

blockheads are there for a reason, to tie the two sides of the boat together and give the boat some rigidity, if they are not fibreglass in place properly without delaminating occurring or in Colin’s or David’s boats in places, not fibreglasses at all then your only be given a plaster to fix the problem, I would be very dubious of buying the boat. that ply has lost it's integrity. Ply is very ridged due to its cross bond construction. The force to deform the ply to the extent shown would completely ruin it's integrity I'm afraid. Just fixing the visible edge in my humble opinion will not be a long term fix. even installing those structural channels will just transfer those loads elsewhere on that bulkhead. Sure the door opening is a weak point and if the door was reinforced like that then maybe it would be ok. Maybe. But now that the ply is compromised, it has to be replaced. I'm a house builder and we use "ply beams" called LVL's. They are incredibly strong but the ones we use are very beefy. We use thin ply to provide bracing, but you need a much stronger structure. A static home has way less lateral force than what is exerted on the ply bulkhead. We use ply for concrete formwork but the amount of reinforcing and structural support added is insane. Also, a structural repair on a building site will need the complete structure to be revealed to understand the full extent of the damage and give access for a proper repair. Sikaflex is not a structural repair product on its own. Needs great clamping in form of many screws over a large surface area. I'll watch the repair with great interest, unfortunately the extent of damage on those bulkheads will be classified on a building site as broken and will not be repaired. As a builder I will be very worried if my engineer presents that as a structural solution/fix. I'll appoint another engineer. Sorry, not what you would like to hear, just my opinion.

The beginning splits you mention are not odd, but to be expected from a FEA point of view as part of the deformation that would eventually break the bulkheads, if nothing was done. The damage is minimal, but as they are, the bulkheads are by no means ok, just not cracked yet. They need a reinforcement and IMHO you are still doing this in time.

I'm afraid the integrity of the ply has been lost. It may look ok but it isn't. Take that ply out and put it under load and it will not have 20% of it's original strength. The load on the ply exceeds the ply capacity to carry the load. I'm not convinced this will resolve the problem.

@SailingDauntless

There has never been an issue with bulkhead to hull adhesion. This issue was overtension to a single layer 15mm bulkhead causing collapse and failure. If the bulkheads fail then they must be removed and reglassed into the hull.

If this bulkhead breaks, a whole chain of subsequent damage develops, among which is separation of hull and bulkhead. Do not confuse primary and secondary damage, which admittedly is not obvious if all you look at is the result in a badly damaged boat where the chain went to its end.

The reinforcement kit and instructions are sent from Lagoon specific to your boat based on your submission of the information they request. Not including dry time, it really only took about 6 hours total.

I have been in the wall inspected the bulkhead to hull joints which are solid. I don’t know where your getting your info from but all structural bulkheads are tabbed in on these boats….. only non-structural walls, floorboard supports and furnishings are affixed with Plexus.

Seems after all the “press” about this issue , putting the reinforcement kit in , regardless, is the way to go! Everything looks good and straight now and the reinforcement kit will keep it that way. I think when a company involves marine architects in their process for the kit, I would feel very comfortable owning this boat (and I would if I were 10 years younger!)
@glennedwards1449

Well I am sure that this fix save many 450's who have little or no defamation. The issue is with those who have major problems and it is not an easy or quick fix. I found the announcement by Lagoon interesting in that they said the report by these naval architects agreed with themselves that the boats were safe to sail. That is a lot different from saying well it is not a design flaw that just means well the mast is not going to come down and you can sail it to port. BTW the "Press" about the issue was started by a KZfaqr who ironically got a lot of hate from owners not that they disagreed with the issue they just did not want it published because it knocked a lot of money of their boats.
@Jimfinn649
@Jimfinn649 Жыл бұрын
I disagree with Peggy. If you ask a 'prior owner' of an L450 if they would buy another one at the current market price, the answer is likely to be a resounding "No," and that says everything. There are so many other fine vessels that do not possess this structural issue, 'repair kitted' or not. I realize this is not a great thing for sellers to hear, but it seems honest, and accurate.
@glennedwards1449
@glennedwards1449 Жыл бұрын
@@Jimfinn649 I understand what you are trying to say except not a fair comparison. If you are a prior owner of any vessel it is unlikely you would buy the same again needs change the market changes i.e. more modern designs are on the market or perhaps your family has grown and you need a bigger boat etc etc. Would people buy a L450 at the market price yes for sure. The question you should ask is if the market price worldwide is less due to these bulkhead failures. I would say yes even for one fitted with a repair kit. Of course this is just my opinion

@@glennedwards1449 I am not sure I agree. I have sold a few boats due to situational changes that I would absolutely buy again. Of course, those are the ones that I have unfettered faith in.

Well that little deflection your seeing in your bulkheads is a sign that the bulkheads have separated from the hull something you have not checked yet a simple way to do that is check your deck to see how far it has dropped just like collens did on his boat Parlay . That so called repair kit they sent you is a joke you had better be taking a much closer look at your boat .

Colin’s boat needed repair and rebuilding NOT reinforcement. All boats are eligible for a reinforcement kit but if one is repairing, the methodology is to re-build the bulkhead with three layers vs rebuilding to original spec and adding a reinforcement kit.

@@SailingDauntless Well I guess all you owners can thank Colin for exposing the flaw if they all need rebuilding or reinforcing. Your boat was fully sunken after Irma and they are even covering yours so they must really be acknowledging the design flaw, which is great. Would have never happened without his episodes.

What you‘re oblivious of is that every part - and thus every repair - has to be made at the right strength. Not too weak, not too strong. As cats are flexing big time you‘d just create a new weakest link somewhere else in the chain. Otherwise you could just bolt and epoxy some nice 2mm 316 sheets to each side of the bulkhead - plenty strong albeit a bit heavy maybe… ☺️

Try using a string line on the full length of the bulkhead and that would show how bad your bulkheads are not with a pathetic 6 inch rule, as those bulkheads should be perfectly straight as a die, and the side that has an shallow S shape bend it has failed, the amount of stress that it needs to do that sort of damage to plywood under compression is phenomenal. Your fooling yourselves if you think that that is minimal, I'd hate to think what you tell your wife what six inches is..
@SailingDauntless
@SailingDauntless Жыл бұрын
Thank you for the comment, The string line showed the bulkheads perfectly straight so I’ve only shown the parts that are NOT straight. Since the resting compression is aprox 9000lbs I agree that it must be immense. Catamarans are designed to and need to flex significantly. Any deformation/damage from that flex absolutely needs attention with reinforcement or repair which is why we are installing the kit. However, despite what I, you or anyone else thinks, the engineers at VPLP who have designed and engineered more that 240 racing, cruising and luxury catamarans in the last three decades says that it is safe and structurally sound. I am confident in their professional opinion. PS my wife worked construction for 21 years and she can read a tape 😉
