Yes Peter, welding inside the hull plate along the horizontal ribs and vertically on the frame segments first is paramount to keeping the outside edges of the shell plates perfectly aligned. And after that's done, they can go back to the outside joints , grind the tacks down smooth and flush, then grind a " U " into the seam down to the root of the weld behind or the edge of the backing rib or frame. This ensures that the cover weld bead is properly penetrated sufficiently so the strength of the structure is not compromised when any stress or impact occurs. Any impact would only most likely put a dent in the shell only where isn't a rib or frame behind it. The exposed weld bead will most likely be ground flush and faired if required by the engineer. The tricky part of all this is maintaining a weld sequence to not overheat the aluminium to ensure any distortion endured by the shell plate in areas where no rib or frame behind will not cause dishing. If this happens, an amended weld procedure must be made to avoid dishing , but still keep the original intended strength of the structure.

Lots of welding nags and pilgrim step welding if necessary. A heat dissipation paste can be applied parallel to the weld seam.

I used to weld steel plating, fairing etc. LNG , container and barge in Quincy Shipyard yrs ago. Confirming aluminum is a lot harder to work with than steel. Thx Fulltimber your post said it all . I never worked with Aluminium, looking at the tac spacing I see now why there closer... thx.

I really like to see the raw view of your wandering camera. It is refreshing for me (as an engineer) to see the rapid pace on the shop floor. I see the trade off between “meticulous early design" and “just build it and make it fit”. I suspect the next hull will come together even faster.

😂Gosh Peter, I haven't really seen another video of yours since you were spearing fish with the South American babe during the plandemic. Are you having an aluminium cat built? Did you win the lottery? You were one of the few that inspired me to start looking for a boat to sail away from this madness. Then the fifth dimension smiled upon me and I'm currently completing a 40ft cat that sadly its original builder died during the fourth year of his build. I'm working hard to try and get her in the waterby September of this year and then cruise her down to the Med for winter. The original builder designed it as a power cat with two 60HP outboards. I'm completing it as a total solar boat, no sails, 6kW of solar panels, two 45kwh LiPO4 banks, one per hull and two 15kW electric outboards by Aquamot. It already has two 250l petrol tanks so I'm going to carry two 2,2kw petrol generators just in case, but want to run it all from the sun if possible. Maybe see you around in a few years.

I'm trying to work out where the dagger boards will fit. Can't see any clue yet. Years ago, I read Thor Heyerdahl's Kon Tiki Expedition book. The raft had 3 (?) dagger boards, the use of which was unclear. During the voyage, they found that pulling up one would alter the course by 2 or 3 degrees, so they seemed to be used for fine tuning the course.
