Hiya Crew... I hope you enjoy this vid.... But for the boat owners out there.... I want to know if you've had any similar troubles with battery switches heating up, not only causing a fire risk, but blocking those valuable amps from making their way to your batteries????

I use the ‘Perko’ brand switch but I don’t have solar charger coming back into them I only have a trickle charge when on shore power so my return amps aren’t that high .. the batteries also get charged from engine alternator ... I’d atleast put some large disconnects inline for just in case ..

Yeah PO... I think I'll cough up the $ and buy a latching Gigavac contactor for a disconnect.

Aye m8’s, sometimes I wish I was a manufacturer of stuff like that… no! not like that… of stuff that is better. And although I know it’s not my cup of tea. But in solar power systems, in electric circuits, and other boat related goods, there is so much rubbish! Even with branded, expensive stuff. You have to be thorough when choosing equipment. And ask all the inconvenient questions. It’s not the one asking stupid questions who is the looser - it’s the one who can’t answer them who is.

Heya JT... Before i took these switches apart, i was of the belief that they were high quality... probably only because they cost a lot of money! I'm not sure what sort of switching Victron offers, but i recommend asking a marine sparky (without a sales pitch) which switch really IS capable of handling the stated currents.... I know this is old, but Pacific Yacht Systems KZfaq channel explains about charging loads from the alternator should be attached to the unswitched distribution circuit. Looks like you discovered that yourself.

Yeah the switch was so that I could electrically isolate the engine to try to obtain a floating earth system to help prevent stray current erosion... It was also convenient to work on the engine with tools without sparks... But those switches although rated correctly were not adequate. If you know of a good quality switch of 200A continous let me know... Cheers

Yup, we have a 200A fuse in the circuit... never had an overcurrent situation.... But these switches still heat up and melt. 😉

Who makes those battery switches...shame on them! Can’t even handle 160 amps when rated for 600??? Dissapointed to see that your boat needs repairs too...was beginning to think it was all sunshine and cocktails ;) Good tech tip...looking forward to hearing more. Life on Jupiter Yes...we haven’t noticed any heating on our battery switch, but we actually just switched it out for a Blue Seas ACR automatic battery switch. We will have to see, the next time we motor, what gets hot and what doesn’t. We have a high output alternator from Balmar now, so a lot more amperage will be going through, so we will be keeping a close eye on it! -Rebecca on SV Brick House

If the cable is getting hot you have a loose connection or wire undersized or a long distance.

Nah Michael the cable is getting hot because of the resistance at the switch... Its conducting down the cable... 1m away from the switch its only just warm... Near the switch its melting!

I have never seen this in a lot of sea miles , ? Why the altinator is involved , they are usually after the batteries , and to isolate the batteries , engine start, house, generator , ?

Hey David... Since i have decent bank of LifePo4 batteries and 2 x 200A alternators, i have large currents moving to and fro..... So these switches were in between the alternators and batteries so that I could isolate my engines (alts/starter) completely from the batteries keep a "floating earth" for a metal hull, to reduce the chance of stray currents and electrolysis. The idea was to minimise the hull/battery connection. When i wasn't motoring, i would turn the switches off to disconnect the engine/battery. However, in the last 2 years since these switches failed, i've just had a bolt connecting the cables and i haven't noticed any electrolysis... so my elec sys is not currently a floating earth. Soon we hope to be in the US so i will try a Gigavac contactor which should be better. Cheers

@@davidwarnes5158 Yep removed for now... my complaint is with those switches rated at 500A continuous and 1500A intermittent... I would like to be able to quickly disconnect power to the engine tho...to prevent stray current, safely swing spanners and in case of fire!.... so im still working on it.

@@SailingLifeonJupiter those switches are taking a hammering , power rushing towards them , then bouncing back as more power is created , that has to go some where , Your lucky you had no fire , just put in a splitter use the power, remove an altinator , I've been on cats with just one engine ,or wire them up differently to split the load , Windless battery , and start , then house , this is hidden on most cruising cats as they use one engine ,

Hey David i'm not sure i follow you... The alternators are only putting out what is demanded by the load/batteries...controlled by the variable field of the smart regulators... The cabling is spec'd to handle about 300Amps for charging and Ive allowed a nominal maximum of 200Amps (100A per engine) to be conservative.... the switches in question are also spec'd to handle well beyond those currents, but it is clear they are not what the label says. With the switches out of the circuit, i have no problem pumping 200A into my hungry Lifepo4's when i need to... With cables barely becoming warm... Anyhow all is good and cool with my system now....thanks for your feedback

I was hoping someone else would have some good info on this question Louis... I haven't found one yet... After being appalled at the tiny contacts on the inside of this one, i simply couldn't trust any of them until i open them up and take a look. When ive asked my Lifepo4 battery guy about this issue, he recommended Gigavac electromagnetic contactors... Hopefully we will be in USA soon and i will get one to try out... Expensive tho!

Actually, Voltage for Voltage, DC is more dangerous than AC. But your right, 12V (and 24V) are not dangerous to humans. Just wanted to say incase someone thought that playing with high voltage but DC is safe. It is NOT. Thanks for the vid, slowly going through all/most of your videos now. Another hint, keep the large cable runs as short as possible. The Voltage drop over cables with DC is pretty horrendous. If you check the voltage at one point in a cable close to the Alternator, then the voltage at the other end of a long cable, you will see this regardless of the gauge of the cable. DC simply does not travel well.
