ABOUT US:
Jupiter² was built in the Philippines by an Australian designer for Jamie. During his time away from work, Jamie lived on board and cruised South East Asia. One of his life dreams is to sail around the world. His plans came together at the end of 2018 when he met a Filipina lounge singer in China. Princess was yearning for a vacation since she had been working many years to support her family. Finally, her siblings got their own jobs and she decided to join Jamie on Jupiter² and go sailing. It was a wild decision for her because she had never sailed before. For the first time, they sail for two weeks around Phuket, Thailand. She began to see what Jamie love about the sea. They both resigned from their jobs in early 2019 and began cruising full time.
Hopefully some inspiration to "Quit Job and Go Sailing".

Perfect boat, certainly big enough, certainly fast enough, good looking, rugged construction, half of the cost an Outremer. I would encourage you to talk about the Lost in Space series you liked as a boy. Upon reflection, it makes sense to me now that the show has influenced you in terms of expression and tastes from sideburns to font on the boat's name. Hope I am right. If not, forget it.

Simply amazingly gracious of you to share the play-by-play details of the construction of your beautiful Jupiter ( BTW Lost In Space was one of my favorite TV programs). The apparent quality and care of fabrication and construction are impressive, the trade-offs notwithstanding, to end up with a 48ft. (14.6m) aluminum sailing catamaran for $300k (USD). Of course, the question of how she handles will be answered in other videos.

@IanSGI

Bow thrusters are pointless on a cat: they serve no purpose at all when you have two engines. Even in a monohull, they are normally unnecessary. More training for the captain and crew is far cheaper and will never break down.

Were there anything you would of done differently or done over? any cons or things we should watch out for in an aluminum construction or in the builder? Were they skilled builders and it was it worth the cost savings or was it you got what you paid for? Looking forward to your episode discussing the battery bank. Interesting, how do these compare against Valence batteries? Also would be interesting to hear your thoughts on the merits of going all-electric. Two 15kW motors should be enough for a cat like this, although I'm not sure if usual go-cart motors will work in marine environment. I haven't seen any KZfaqr channel with electric cat, although it makes a lot more sense on performance cats than on monohulls.

In some of the drone sailing clips (like 3 boats racing), it seems that there is some fore-to-aft pitching motion. 1) Do you think this is equivalent to other designs? 2) Could it be more due to such a fine entry on the bows? I believe Catana started adding bulbs under waterline at the bows to reduce this pitching. Might that have helped reduce bows from digging in on the Atlantic crossing when the wind suddenly increased and you couldn't sock the A-Spin? 3) Are these sail drives or shaft drive from the engines? 4) Does the aluminum increase engine noise and water flow/hardware banging noises?
@SailingLifeonJupiter
@SailingLifeonJupiter 3 жыл бұрын
Yeah Steve... I think Jupiter may be a little more "active" than the other boats due to being lighter... which means we are still sailing in 5kts of breeze, and not motoring. 2. The hull entry is fine with only a little flare, so that would explain it... bulbs will certainly help that, but of course slow you down as well.... With any performance boat in a fresh breeze you need to have your wits about you...actively sailing, trimming, reefing and constant decision making.... knowing its limits and yours... and when to push it or not. 3. I've got shaft drives....most of the owners choose them so that you can beach the cat easily. 4. I don't think there's any appreciable noise level difference.... There is 1inch of spray in foam behind the interior laminate throughout all hulls and decks (except the bilges)... The loudest place on the boat is at the helm!... the noise of the wakes behind me, while we are doing 10kts.

I noticed the cat hobby-horse a bit in another vid where you were "racing" two other performance cats Why not double or triple the battery bank, same for solar panels, use light electric motors, and mount the heavy diesel somewhere midship as a genset, for times when the sun has been out for days, or you re motoring a long stretch, thus keeping weight off the ends, less pendulum effect btw great channel, will blow up within a year

Would you be able to provide a link to the plans for your boat? One that shows the layout on all levels. This boat yard in Cebu is very intriguing as the price of your new fitted out boat is going for about the same price as a used ‘glass boat. Do any of the bulkheads going from bow to stern have watertight doors? What would the cost be for a boat equipped with two regenerating Oceanvolt drives and lithium batteries,instead of two Diesel engine-driven screws? Would still have a diesel generator for backup power and for air-conditioning.

Great boat, ticks my boxes in so many points. One thing bugged me: aren't you uncomfortable with inaccessible wiring? I see the benefits (simplicity of producing, no chafe etc etc) still, I would feel kinda itchy knowing that one broken strand would make a branch of cables nonfunctional and there is no way to find out where or replace etc...

@@FeelItRising I was thinking the same thing on some conduit. When I built my 31' tri, I used PVC plumbing tubing for conduit in case I wanted to add systems later. I have not had any internal wiring issues since my 1993 launch but I crimped, soldered and heatshrink tubed all connections. My required wiring is also extremely simple compared to all the systems required for a big cruising cat.

Can you change some of the inside layout like having a galley up rather than a galley down, have two master hulls, set it up with Ocean Volt electric engines, set up a solar arch on the transom and other things like that? What would one of these cost used if $300k USD is the brand new price? Is the spray foam a closed cell polystyrene or an open cell?

I'll be looking for a boat within the next year, dont mind it if takes a further year to build. What motors are they? what HP, and how fast do they cruise, flat out? Fuel consumption? Speed at sail? Beam, Draft, mast height above water? Sorry, I guess I should be asking Tim these questions, but if you know them I would appreciate. Thanks.

Hey Raptor... Tim is in the process of returning to Cebu to start building again... Email me on svjupiter2@gmail.com if you need to get in touch.... so he will advise what costs are at the mo... I'd suspect perhaps a little more. He takes 18-24mths to build these and he has a wait list. I've got Beta 35's, but Tim normally uses Yanmar 30's I motor on one whilst cruising at about 5.5kts... flat out on 2 would be about 10kts in calm conditions. Cruise fuel is 3LPH... Sailing varies of course...but ocean trade wind sailing would be 10kts... Beam 24', Length 48', Draught 3', Air draught 69'. Theres been a huge amount of interest from these vids...If you're serious you better get in quick! I hope to see you out there! Cheers
