Just a thought; if you plan on keeping the sawdust for filler or other uses, store it in a metal can with a lid, much like you would store oily rags, and store it outside away from the shop building. You definitely don't want it to spontaneously combust and burn both the shop and boat down to ashes.

When I was a Boy Scout we took the cardboard containers eggs come in and filled with very course wood (larger then dust) and poured wax over it to make firestarters. Twelve at a short. But since we had to get a pot waxy to make them we made dozens at at the same time. It took very little time to make a couple of years worth of firestarters

Couple of things about your thickness planer. first of all I own the same machine, when the chips start coming out the front of it it means you have chips backing up into the head of the machine ,your extraction hose running to your vac is not big enough, a better choice would be a larger hose going to a chips separator ,or a dust collector. once the head of the machine gets clogged with chips you'll find it's very difficult to turn the wheel for your height adjustment because it's jammed up in all the sprockets on the chain drive and it has to be cleaned out. secondly only shift cutting speeds when the machine is running .and thirdly if it's a real cold day the drive wheels inside get stiff and they won't push your wood through very well. Other than that it's a good machine and it'll get the job done.

The portable lunch box planer is perfect for your needs. And you are lucky to have such nice cedar. However if you have lumber that is cupped, then you will need a jointer which is a machine with a table and spinning cutter head which allows you to remove the cup from from the board giving you a flat reference surface. If you run cupped or twisted lumber through the surface planer, the infeed and outfeed rollers of the planer flatten the board during the surfacing. When the board exits the planer the twist or cup just return. You are fine with the lumber you have it seems to be premium cedar that is very flat, dry and not cupped.

For a glass smooth finish from that planer be prepared to install new blades. The solid carbide ones are worth the money IMHO. Also, I think you will find a cyclone type dust collector before your shop vac is worth rigging up. It saves so many hours cleaning filters in the shop vac.

Just a little tip, the shavings from the planer makes perfect wood filler with the perfect colour to make seams and filled spots totally disappear. It will stain perfectly and look like it never happened. Not sure how useful this is in your application, but there it is. Just mix the dust with wood glue until you get a peanut butter type consistency and it's ready to go.

I’ve had some more thoughts about closed shower sumps. The issue with these is that the scum build up rate is quite rapid (weeks). BUT, if you make a round sump container (ie cylindrical with a radiused bottom rim) you can make a simple centrally pivoting brush to clean the scum in several revolutions. I just might do this for my aft head where the sump is less than satisfactory. Another solution is to use a Kärcher rotary jet type solution that they have in their tile cleaning gizmo. You can make the round sump pan easily by fibre glassing over any suitably sized radiused bottom industrial container or bucket, with the pump, float switch, and cleaning brush mounted off the lid. Another thing I learned about my boat is that this design suffered from sinks filling up when on a hard starboard tack, meaning valves should be closed. BUT I’ve decided to use those pop up push down plugs that seal with an O ring on the drain inner rim. Solved. It all comes down to fore knowledge and choices.

I am finding it quite interesting to watch Aladino learn American standard measurements. As an American machinist, I understand the struggle when you first learn another measuring system, but as you work with it more and more, it becomes second nature, and that's what I'm seeing here. Just a little advice for Aladino if he reads this. I find it easier to memorize the decimal equivalent of the common fractions. It makes it easier to add and subtract in your head if you do it that way. In fact, I never write fractions, only decimal numbers.
