This week we lift out to do some urgent repairs to our keel where we believe some water is getting into the boat and making its way into the diesel tank.
Although we don't ask anyone for money, people do ask us if there is a way they can help us keep making these videos.
For one time donations

Epoxy in your hair, that reminds me of something. In 1982 I started my apprenticeship as a vehicle painter and in the first few weeks you only do light work. The son of the boss's brother started the apprenticeship with me and we tidied up the paint shelf with the cans of leftover paint and varnish. While we were doing that I took a can and shook it and I hadn't paid attention to whether the lid was firmly on the can. Of course it wasn't and all the paint poured over my colleague's head. He had green car paint in his hair for a few days.😂

Definitely would have thought an anode on the shaft or prop! Extra anode by the original or on the hull useless. Just go larger if that anode doesn’t last 6 months. We are also super happy with our Coppercoat after 5 years. Nice job on the keel. Hull under the water looks good mate, no need to lift again for at least 2 years. Especially if you dive on the boat regularly to check things.

Would a flexible fuel bladder add some security to the interior of the diesel tank? If you're unfortunate enough to damage the keel on your travels you don't want to corrupt the diesel if you can help it - might spoil your run to safe harbour. Good film, very interesting. I think your cruising plans are BRILLIANT. An example to everyone, of how to enjoy, safe, risk avoiding family sailing. No matter what your experience, when you add in new 'elements' you need to relearn how they affect your sailing. You have more new things going on than most of us; living aboard, children on board, lots of new equipment, long term cruising, less access to; friends, known suppliers and trades people, less local knowledge, the list goes on. With your planning you will all be safe and enjoy many many adventures.

We’re taking it very very slowly. Move from one place to the next, keep it short, simple, good weather, daylight and fix what we need to fix as we identify issues. And yes over time our distances will get greater and our confidence will grow but apart from anything we want to do it this way because long passages are simply boring and we want to see lots of places as we go

I understand very well your problems with this fuel tank. The first boat I bought was steel. The seller has made it by himself except the hull. He was so uneasy with the diesel oil in the keel under water, that he ignored the tank in the keel and build another one under the bed of the cabin. I was not happy with the stink of it and the loss of space. I understand now how he was clear sighted.

Please stop worrying and justifying what your beautiful children are doing. These gorgeous people are adults who love their children and would not put them in harms way. For gods sake viewers stop telling them what to do with their children. If Jack wants to climb a ladder on dry land he is just exploring, he is just being a child. I love watching from a distance (Australia) and enjoy their hard work and commitment to making a better than boring life for their little family. Jack and Olllie will be amazing humans beings as they grow with this world. ♥️♥️♥️♥️♥️

Andy and Melissa, congrats on reaching 70K. You're absolutely doing the right thing by doing short daytime hops to shake the boat down. When the time comes to do longer crossings she should be in good shape and you will have gained enough experience with handling her.
@SailingMelody
@SailingMelody 17 күн бұрын
That’s yes that’s the plan. Build up slowly. Some people are saying things like “you’re never going to do any long passages” which isn’t true, we are, but at the moment we want to enjoy the short hops and the quaint little towns and moorings and anchorages as much as possible. Aside from the aspect of working on the boat, long passages are boring. We didn’t get into this to spend months off shore, we got into this to enjoy sailing from location to location and exploring as we go. So the boat can be worked on as we go until she and we are ready for longer passages

Your one anode appears to be more than sufficient. Don’t be tempted to add more as it may in fact do more harm than good by inducing too much galvanic action. 18 months is a perfectly satisfactory service life. Be sure to put a rubber gasket between the anode and the copper coat. Having the anode fixed in place by nuts and lock washers will enable you to change the anode annually without having to lift the boat. You may well find, as I do, that the copper coat will allow you to go two or three years between lifts provided that you are able to inspect your hull, scrub it if needed, and change the anode using scuba or a snorkel. Oh, and whenever you check the anode scrape it back to bare metal to ensure good conductivity. Keep up the good work!
@timrobinson1393
@timrobinson1393 18 күн бұрын
It may be a little too late now, but remember when you haul out before you go back in the water, you have to clean all the growth off of your anodes. If you don’t clean them back to raw metal, they don’t work as efficiently. Nice job repairing the keel!

Very happy the drop on the bottom of the harbor when the lock failed wasn't the cause of the water coming in. Great to have ocean melody out of the water so you could asses everything and clean up and fixed it al very good. Brovo on using whole cloth on the bottom of kile. Having had more than my share of glass over lead. Filling the bulb keel with water to test for leaks is Great way to see leeks, however a good test for when your in the water, you can seal the top of your gas tank from the top, install a psi pressure gauge and add 4-8 Psi on compressor air use a bicycle hand pump, just installed a stainless steel stove bicycle Zero fitting, 1 see gauge for leek down test, if bad results,take a dip to look for bubbles coming from the outside of the keel. Same method can be used to pressure repair to push appoxi into the leaks areas. Also u can put thinner in the fuel tank and pressurising to dry the area between the keel and lead. 4 psi will push appoxi out the bottom, just plug lowest hole first and drill hole every 2- 3 inches while filling up with appoxi and using air pressure to assure completely sealed. Actually this is the reverse of Vacuum Bagging if you think about it. In

Do you have a hot water heater, hot water pipe or possibly and exhaust close enough to your diesel tank? Heat might be causing excessive condensation. You could put a thermometer in your tank and check that way? Also any purge cannistors located near a damp heat source could be collecting moisture.

Well done - looks as though you've really fixed the bottom of the keel. A thought about anodes.......I've been told that with all the anodes on yachts in a marina an electrolysis circuit can sometimes happen, and an anode on a rope, dangled from the cockpit, can help whilst you're in a marina. It's easy to replace, too! The fluffy thing on a microphone is called a Dead-Kitten, a Dead-Cat....or even a Dead-Wombat, dependent on size!

Nice repair Andy ! No need to ever apologize for anything , you are providing interesting content and for that I’m grateful. I guess adding glass laminate to the inside of tank is a belt and braces approach but , much like welding it really hard to make it 100% non porous. A few good layers of quality tank lining product should be more than adequate , and potentially better , as easier to well. Cheers Warren

34:00 Anodes Looks fine. If you find anything aboard showing signs of corrosion advancing, make sure it's grounded to the common ground and keep annual check on your anode.

Andy as always entertaining, informative and definitely LMFAO at you a lot🤣 That was a lot of work it seems you did there and jobs very well done both you and Melissa. I think it is a fantastic idea just day sails down the coast and it doesn't mean you have to dock at a marina each time you could anchor in some Bay some where or use a buoy. Aladino would be proud of you. Okay mate until next video cheers

Your anode doesn't look very worn for 18 months. Check your bonding system if you haven't done yet. I had an electrician go over one of my boats because I saw significant corrosion on the buss bars. He wound up replacing most of the buss bars and making new connections to the bus bars. I had another boat that had some work done to the bottom and they forgot to connect the bonding system to the large plate anode on the stern. I noticed that the anode was not degrading. Basically, the zincs on the running gear were taking all of the abuse. No damage was done and a mystery was finally solved...

Glad y’all were able to get it repaired. I wonder if the diesel tank could not be coated with petro liner plastic. People put plastic liners in automotive gas tanks and it’s like a liquid that dries to a hard plastic shell wondering if that could be done with your diesel tank.

You can get custom made plastic tanks, but worth looking at.

I've heard the steel keels (not sure if this is....just as I say that "it's lead"). Well I was going to say they don't absorb impact but transfer it into the boat......not the case here obviously, but still interesting ??? Maybe not 😅

Just one thought from me. Those that know anything about boats and sailing generally will that you’re doing things properly, to a higher standard than most and are taking no chances. Those that know nothing will bleat on and on with pointless criticism. It’s difficult to ignore them of course but don’t feel that you need to justify yourself to them.

First off, im a huge fan. I really like the channel. As far as the anodes go, i think ive heard that an anode protects an area of metal somewhere around two or three feet around it. Im not sure, and I'd guess it depends on a lot of factors. However, that one seems quite far from your propeller. I understand that theres limited area on your shaft, but maybe you could get one of those flat disc shaped ones and mount it on the sides of your rudder in close proximity to your metal shaft and prop. I also understand that so far you have no electrolysis problems, but that can change in ome bad marina that has an electrical issue at a dock. Your prop and shaft will thank you for it in the long run. I know it won't help currently as you said your a month out, and have already moved on, but think on studying on it before it does get some damage. Just giving you something to ponder, not judging or tryimg to come off as a know it all. Best of luck, best wishes,and Peace on the water to you and yours.

Your diesel keel tank plans are bomb proof. Not gonna be fun working in that space, but the plan ensures a clean, watertight long term solution. Water in diesel is an ever present nemesis.... enough water contamination comes out of the pump nozzle to cause endless problems.
