The Battle Creek neighborhood of Saint Paul is named for the last recorded battle in the area between Ojibwe and Dakota tribes, in 1842.

I grew up just off the creak on Larry Ho Drive. I used to have to cross the creek to get to school at Battle Creek Jr. High School, I think they call it Battle Creek Middle School these days. When my high school days rolled in, we used to hang out down at the _Ice Breakers_ which were those large rectangular concrete slabs that were placed in the creek just before the underpass to Upper Afton Drive, to well, break up the ice so it wouldn't damage the underpass. I visited the area recently and wanted to take my children down to where I hung out. Now the Ice Breakers are gone and our little 'party spot' is clearly visible from Upper Afton Road so I guess the kids are not having any keggers down there anymore! Probably still throwing those at the _Top of The World._

I spent my childhood playing in this park and then only recently learned that it was my 4x Great Grandfather who lead the Ojibwe into battle against the Dakota. Pretty wild how this world works.

Wow, so sad as a product of St. Paul Public Schools ('68-'81) we learned NOTHING about the Native American history of our immediate area (Kaposa of St. Paul). We had not learned of the Dakota Conflict of 1862. Now, 2021, the areas I've played in, Battle Creek Park (site of battle) and Pike Island (internment camp winter 1962), and the city/state forefathers like Sibley being murderers. So sad.
