One of my favourite engines....

Yo Stoney, I like them so much I have 3 of them - 2 of the 200's and 1 of the 100's. Slowly but surely I am converting (as time permits) a 200 to spark and I have designed an adapter to fit a Saito petrol carby but...there are many projects on my bench so it will be some time before I get to finishing it. One thing about these engines - they certainly close the doors on the myths that four strokes aren't really good at running inverted. Gen Saito designed them to power models of WW11 aircraft such as Spitfires, Mustangs and the like. Thank you for your interest. Regards Brian Oily

@@BrianOilyEngines Can you you use the existing carby and with spark ignition conversion? I have a lot of Saito engines still new in their boxes and considering spark conversion.

Yo Brian, your neighbours must really love you. Keep up the good work.

Yo Lee, One neighbour is learning to ply the drums, another has a team of workers breaking up a lot of concrete work in the yard and dumping it in a large metal skip, another has grand children who play loud music out the front and 'sing' into some type of public address system, there are a number of barking dogs constantly and the majority of my neighbours (I have 7 as I have 3 blocks) are either Lebanese or Iranian and they are all building Granny Flats in the back yard (mostly larger than the main house) so there is a constant rattle of gas nail guns, the whine of saws, planers, drills and the like plus material handling noise. The front road is a speedway for hoons and the Army flies right over our house in their big helis and they are so low we are on 'waving' terms with most of the pilots and I can tell you their eye colour. Now, I ask you...who hears my engines running???? Just in case, I wait for the constant attendance of grass mowers, weed whackers and leaf blowers. Oh yes, we are also in the flight path for the nearby airport so there is a constant flow of various aircraft. 'What's that - You asked me something. Just a minute, my hearing is not so good these days." (Ho Ho) Regards Brian Oily

Sounds like a scene from "The Castle" . Can I just add that I have been reading your reviews from way back in the olden days when you did reviews in Airborne Mag. Always a colourful and interesting column.

I would like to buy one of these engines but they are out of production. I wonder why they have stopped making such a good engine?

Yo Adam, The local agent is a bit vague on the supply of the engine as he is not getting much information from Saito but...I would contact Saito direct to be sure if you want a positive answer. I know there are some still available in hobby shops and I was able to purchase some spare parts recently for one damaged a little in a crash. Certainly are great engines and, with care, they will last a long time Regards Brian Oily

Hello Brian, Im just running up my new 200Ti twin for Hangar 9 Spitfire, I just would like to ask, what percentage of oil/nitro/alcohol worked best for you? I was following the manual, as they wrote 10-20% nitro, I bought 15% one with 20% oil, but it's little bit rough and kicky :-)

Yo Vojtêch, Nice to hear from you. That certainly is a nice engine as is the 100Ti which I have also. I am going to convert a 200 Ti to spark ignition some time soon - I am still slowly designing a manifold for a petrol carburettor. As to the oil content it certainly does not like 20% oil - way too much. What oil are you using? For the quantity I recommend 10% as quite adequate using Morgans Coolpower blue or Klotz KL200 Original Techniplate. If you would like to discuss the oil quantity with me further, please use my email address and I will go into detail for you. Email at :......... oilyhand@bigpond.net.au - or - beewun@bigpond.net.au Regards Brian Oily

Yo psjdb, They certainly are a great engine as is the 100 version which I have also. I have a second 200 that I picked up with rusty bearings (but all else okay) and I am slowly but surely (as time permits) converting it to spark ignition. I am designing a manifold to use a Saito petrol carby or maybe an Evo as they are much smaller than a Walbro. Nice to hear from you, Regards Brian Oily

Hey Brian, would like to know how the conversion to spark ignition goes as I would be interested in doing the same on another 200 as well.Cheers Steffan.

Yo Steffan, Don't wait for me - it could be a long wait as I have so many projects 'to do soon' (when I get a round 'tuit'). Just when I think I will spend a bit of time in the workshop a magazine deadline crops up (I write for several magazines) or several repairs come by mail so, my projects get pushed back a bit...once again! What I can tell you if you decide to go it yourself, you need the 'UNEVEN or inline Rcexl CDI for the job as a normal twin unit will not suit for this engine. It would run okay on the fitted carburettor but the petrol carburettor would be icing on the cake. From where do you hail? - I didn't recognise that flying field - it looks good with plenty of area. You can contact me from your Email address to mine at oilyhand@bigpond.net.au rather than go through You Tube each time Regards Brian Oily

the 200ti flys my TWM Spit very nice and fast ,fits perfectly ,and runs solid without glow, it feels hot inside the cowl when i touch the cylinders ,but it perform as it should ,so i guess it is a hot running engine ?!
@BrianOilyEngines
@BrianOilyEngines 8 жыл бұрын
Yo nr g, These engines do not run hotter than any other four stroke glow engine and all engines are hot when you touch the cylinders. However, if you overheat this engine it could be a very expensive exercise. Overheating in a cowl is most often caused by too much air in and not enough out. A narrow opening in the front to allow a blast of air over the cylinders and a large outlet - at least 3 times the area of the inlet is the recommended balance. On test I found the rear cylinder was slightly cooler than the front cylinder when the engine was running which, in my opinion, would have something to do with the vortices of the propeller. The fuel you use is another factor and this engine runs very well on 14% synthetic oil, 10% nitro and methanol and keep the extension (if used) on the breather no longer than 50mm. Regards Brian Oily
