The Dragon Ball Z series has had a lot of video game adaptations, like a lot, alot. While they span various genres, most tend to take the form of some kind of fighting game, which makes perfect sense given the source material. During my childhood, I grew up with the Budokai games and absolutely adored them, but deep down, what I truly yearned for was a game that allowed me to freely explore the expansive world of Dragon Ball.
The Legacy of Goku 2 partially satisfied this craving and is still one of my favourite dragon ball z games of all time. However, it was somewhat constrained by the limitations of the hardware. And then there was Saga's, which turned out to be a big pile of disappointment and empty promises.
Then in 2020, Dragon Ball Z Kakarot made its debut on eighth-generation consoles and PC. Developed by CyberConnect 2, it looked like it was finally going to deliver on the promises made by Sagas 15 years prior.
In early 2023 a PS5 version became available and that is the version I will be playing for this retrospective.
